The Marie Stopes agency will be advertising abortion on Channel 4 next Monday night.

pro-lifers will be up in arms with the Marie Stopes agency defending that "it is important for sexual health"
A huge 76% of UK adults feel the add should be allowed. What do you think?

I believe the term is 'pro-choice'

I doubt anyone is particularly pro-abortion.

OP do you've a link for this story? Is it actually going to be a TV commercial??

I'm pro-choice, but I don't feel entirely comfortable that abortion is being advertised.

Teenage pregancy is a massive problem in the UK and I think a lot of young people see abortion as a form of emergency contraception, like the morning after pill, rather than a big decision that shouldn't be taken lightly.

So, yeah...I don't think it should be advertised tbh.

Is the ad going to be like "GET AN ABORTION!!!" or will it just be informing people that they have options and they should speak to planned parenthood?

    Shouldn't the poll be Pro-Ad or Anti-Ad?

Parents should be allowed to abort a child anytime before its 15th birthday imo.

"Look Timmy, we tried to like you, we really did... but its just not working out.."

I'm pro-choice, but I'm pretty sure I'd never have an abortion myself. I just don't think it's okay for me to be able to decide what another woman should or shouldn't be allowed do in the circumstance of an unplanned pregnancy or whatever.

Was reported in The Star today.
I think people should have a choice but in certain cases, not just because someone got silly or "forgot" to take precautions

    Daily Mail article

I don't feel entirely comfortable that abortion is being advertised.

    Same as.

I have no issue if the advertisement is going to be advertising the particular organisation (what they do, how to contact them if you need to avail of their help), but if they're going to be pushing the agenda of abortion*, glamourising it, or encouraging people to look at abortion as emergency contraception, then I don't really agree.

    * While women should have the right to choose to have an abortion and considering it's legal in the UK, women should know who to contact for help, I think the government in the UK should fund more money towards advertising safe sex, using protection and keeping yourself protected. Abortion shouldn't be undertaken lightly and IMO, shouldn't be regarded as a form of contraception.
A woman has a series of choices alongside abortion should she find herself pregnant against her wishes and those choices should also be advertised and made clear too.

...."glamourising"? How? With dancing Foetuses?...Doctors doing a song and dance number with animated suction devices....?

Can wait until they start sponsoring TV shows. Sex and The City perhaps.

If you don't agree with it, don't do it.. Just don't go stopping others.

One clearly doesn't understand what pro-life is if one is arguing this.

The reason why people oppose abortion (by choice, rather than situations whereby it is a medical necessity) is because it is the taking of another life.

It's not as simple as saying "Don't do it yourself", because it is a life or death issue. If one denies another the right to life, one is denying every single right along with it.

Oh, nail on the head! ;)

What I meant by "glamourising" was making abortion seem trendy or the "in" thing and in turn trivialising its position as a serious procedure*

I also meant glamourising it in the sense that the potential 'ugly' sides to the surgery are removed. The emotional impacts, the psychological impacts, the (perhaps) years it can take to recover from it etc

You can't advertise abortion in the same way you can advertise the likes of cosmetics or fast food; The function of the ad shouldn't be to make a woman want to buy the product.
The advertisement should instead make the woman aware of abortion as an option in a series of options, should she fall pregnant and give her the facts of how abortion works and what she should expect to happen - I hope that's the way the Marie Stopes organisation will handle it.

    * Obviously, some women might not consider it to be a serious procedure, but it's not as simple as going for the likes of a spray tan. There are implications and consequences.
