Anyone know what the penalty is for missing some days from jury duty for acting the b0ll0x, too hungover for example?

I did it late last year and it was certainly an experience. About 70% of the time was spent in the jury room, even at that the time spent in the court room was quite a bit as it was a longer trial I was on. Due to the nature of the trial it was pretty difficult to deal with. It took me at least a week afterwards to get my head round what just happened. It's certainly not something I'd like to have to do again.

Sorry for bringing the mood down a bit but you need to be aware that this isn't fun & games or an easy break from work. The decisions made can and will impact peoples lives... in some cases it will be small, in others much larger.

€500 or €2000 fine I believe. Depends on how much you're taking the piss.

Yeah I did it. Thought it was great, very tiring though. Living with the decision you will make at the very end always weighs heavy and makes you pay attention to everything being said and presented to you.

We had a Jessica Fletcher type girl in our jury, constantly coming up with bizare scenarios.

Pretty similar myself except it was a man coming up with loads of theories. Some people really dont get the whole thing that you have to work with facts and not speculation. Would love to do it again though.

    just remember he's guilty if

    1) he looks a bit shifty
    2) his eyes are too close together
    3) he has a funny sounding name

either that or he's your local councillor

I had it recently. It's fairly interesting and you meet a few characters in the main jury panel room!

Mine was in the new building on Parkgate Street. It was mostly rape/buggery cases while I was there.

I'd love to know what lines the solicitors make their challenges on other than gender, being dressed like a knacker etc. anyone?

If you do get selected and have nothing else to do, you should do it.

After my jury service the entire jury I was on recieved jury service exemption letters. Handy if ever I should get called again and have stuff to do.

Yeah I'm exempt now for three years even though my case was dismissed before we had to come to a verdict!

The exepmtion by default is 3 years unless otherwise specified by a Judge at time of selection...

Don't have a proble with it, last time I was up for selection was 3 and a half years ago. I'm only 25 and been called out twice. My folks have never been called out...

Anyone know where the jury selection comes from?
I hear they take names from the voting register but I don't know if its true.

Yep - juries are selected from a jury panel which is picked at random by the county registrar from the electoral register.

    Seemingly so...

Out of curiosity, why did you write the word "complicated" in italics?

Last year, I had an employee who did 8 weeks of jury service. So not only did I have to pay his wages, but also the wages of a temp to replace him. I found that very annoying & quite costly.

The judge on our case decided that we should be excused from doing jury service again for 10 years

Better than ending up in custody for contempt of court. A person was summoned for Jury duty and when selected she said she couldn't do it because she couldn't get time off work .The Judge got her employers details and sent a squad car to arrest him and bring him before him to answer why he wouldn't let her off.The man said he didn't see why he should have to let her off work.... The Judge informed him he didn't have a choice in the matter and he put him in custody for the afternoon. He changed his mind after that.

Did you actually see that, or hear of it?

I can understand the judge ruling contempt, but those measures seem a bit strong handed to me.

That's partly my point - If I excuse myself as not being available for jury service as I will not be able to make any money, I will most likely be excused. However, if an employee is called up, I have to bear the expense.

My main point is that the State should bear the costs, not the employer. Especially when the costs are often double or more when temps have to be brought in.

    Here's some advice....

If you work for a company that isn't bothered about your jury duty (ie they give you the two weeks off and don't expect you in each day after you're "rejected") then each Thursday wear in a tracksuit, runners and a basey.

If you're picked the prosecution will turn you down and you get Friday off (new juries are never picked on a Friday).

Trust me folks, this works a treat.

I know a businessman who was called for Jury service on Christmas week and couldnt get out of it. As a result he lost thousands from having to close his shop during the busiest week of the year
