It's not me showing the lack of respect.
    Cameras at a funeral?
TD's pressing the flesh, no doubt all the FF cronies from Dublin are there, not to mention the most devious of them all.

Did his ex-wife just say a quote from Blade Runner and then the RTE announcer said it was a quote from Stanley Kubrick's 2001 A space odyssey

The second quote was from Space odyssey, the first from blade runner.

I'm sure a lot of those people were his friends, whether you like it or not. You surely can't be implying that they shouldn't have attended his funeral. Boards is usually a sordid affair at best but there's some terrible stuff coming out of the woodwork this time.

Well said! It's very dignified (despite any politicians who may be there)

    RIP

That may be true about the TD's, but the cameras and the live feed on 2fm, I'm sure was given the go ahead by the family.

That comment about his daughter who is burying her father today, Tut Tut.

You were obviously dragged up and not brought up.

    +1

I didn't like Gerry Ryan at all but come on. He was an established broadcaster, what do people expect?

Excuse me! I thought it was quite apt for Gerry Ryans funeral thread in that this is the way he spoke all the time.

I just watched Gerrys funeral on the internet for the last 2 hours or so - I never even met or spoke to the guy. I can safely say that this is the first funeral which I have witnessed of a person whom I never met or spoken to.

That alone speaks volumes for the great man.

And that says a lot about you.

So what if people choose to watch it. It's the ones watching it to take the piss or get pissed of, that I worry about!

I see nothing undignified about broadcasting or having cameras at a funeral. It's not like they brought an OB unit to his wake, or invited a studio audience into the autopsy. Funerals aren't normally private. They're very public - horribly so, sometimes.

I thought his ex-wife gave a really nice oration. It was also good to hear her mentioning his partner (who was pretty much forgotten by Brian D'Arcy).

Some of the comments on this thread are a bit... unsurprising, given that it's AH. :)

Well this has been an extraordinary day. I went to view Gerry's removal from the family home on Castle Ave, then came home and watched the funeral mass live online. Extraordinary indeed.

My heart went out for Gerry's wife, and thought she grew and showed her great strength when she passed on her condolences to Gerry's new partner & her children.

Someone here (AH) made reference to politicans using this occassion to showcase themselves and press the flesh in front of the camera's (I can't be arsed looking back because you mean little to me today)..

However, at the home and on the way to the church no one took the platform to showcase anything. Simply because everyone is dwarfed by the late G.Ryan & his family - so stop the BS'ing, your making an dope of yourself.

    An extraordinary day indeed.

"I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die."
