lovely little church, sure didn't I get hitched there in 2000 (yep, one of the countless millennium weddings that year!)

Watching the funeral of a celebrity? Jesus christ, that's extremely weird.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 27,252 ✭✭✭✭stovelid

Bit crass to broadcast somebody's funeral IMHO. A funeral should just be just for the attendees with an exception maybe for heads of state or royalty maybe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,255 ✭✭✭Renn

Yeah I was hoping to be listening to the new Lady Gaga tune...thanks Gerry, thanks a lot!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,241 ✭✭✭Sanjuro

What stovelid said. I know if it were my father and a load of rubberneckers were watching/listening, I'd be a bit weirded out. Although it is the fault of RTE more than those wanting in on the action. Very strange altogether.

That church streams all its normal masses online. Obviously a lot of people wanted to see the funeral and it was the family's wishes to let it be shown & broadcast, so I don't see the harm.

Not listening. I don't like funerals.

Fr. Darc' did a good sermon I thought. Very comforting for those who knew him I'd imagine.
It's not at all unusual for masses to be streamed online so I see know reason why, if the family wish it, a funeral mass can't be streamed if people would like to partake but can't be there.
I'd have thought Gerry would be pleased to invite as many people as wished to celebrate his life and comfort his family.
If you're just tuning in to celebrity spot, you'd be bitterly disappointed. It's just a close shot of the altar.

    Your welcome.
As the OP asked the question.
    Anyone listening?

Lovely service so far. Nothing weird about listening to or watching it whatsoever. The church only holds 300 people so not even a smidgen enough for the amount of people who wanted to pay their respects. He lived his life in the public eye every single day and why not now either?

I was under the impression the family were seeking "privacy" following his death.
So they let the whole thing degenerate into a media and celebrity-wannabe beanfeast instead?

  • Where did his kids go to school again? I always noticed how different their accents are. They did really well with the readings.

God Bono is annoying. He only said a few words, and everyone of them was annoying! Nice song though. Hope he doesn't talk at the end now!!

I think the privacy they wanted was not having reporters, paps pestering the family as they grieve. I do think they wanted to celebrate his life with the nation

gerry was the voice of the nation for 22 years if you love him or hate him thats up to you but he helped many people and gave hope to the people of this country i am one fellow that really admired him he had no fear of telling the nation about his life and family he gave advise sometimes he talked rubbish and he ranted on about things he was the best radio broadcaster rte ever had and the listnership numbers tell that story i am one person that is glad his funeral is being broadcasted as i would love to go but i cant rip gerry

Had the radio on in the car there at lunch, this reminds me of the Wacko Jacko funeral, a bloody circus it is, cameras present/celebrities/state representatives etc.

Can anyone confirm if Jedward are there......

The eldest daughter would appear to be a poor mans Kim Kardashian, all falling into place for her now, expect the "reality" show soon.....

Why is Gerry Ryan giving a eulogy at his own funeral?

Seriously, his brother's voice sounds almost exactly the same.
