work out the teachers wages per week worked.

No comparison - the big difference is that a 20 year old teacher:

    Step 1:

has to first achieve an excellent leaving cert (circ.400 points) to get a place on either a Degree course or a specefic teacher training course (higher points c.450 points). Such results place them in the upper quartile of the country in IQ terms.

all a garda needs is a merit award in the APPLIED LEAVING CERT, be over 5"3 or whatever along with a "a cat is on the mat, where is the cat?" assesment

    Step 2:

now the little teacher heads off to 4-5 years of college with no pay except that which he/she receives doing weekend work

garda heads off to templemore for i dont know 18 months on a training allowance perhaps small (150pw + rent??) but essentially paid training and can then supplement that with weekend work, as i have seen

    Step 3:

teacher boy/girl is still at college trying to get a 2.1 so they have any chance of getting a job. they're in there 2nd year and facing another 2 years

super Garda has finished his training, has B.A. in policing studies?????? whatever that is and anyhow i never heard of a degree that could be done in 18months anyway he's out into a job thats waitin for him. How easy was that!!

but he's out and he's on around 30k factoring in shift allowance, other allowances, bit of handy overtime etc.. He's 22 lets say and he's already close to the average industrial wage. He gets pay increases no matter what a retard he is. Nice!

    Step 4:

teacher person is out of college 2 years after Garda Joe and got a 2.1, well done!! but no job waiting for him/her. Probably years and years of being a temporary sub, no job security etc. Good holidays though problem is you dont get paid and have to go on the dole in the summer. Nightmare!! Oh yeah and your on like 24k no overtime, no myraid of allowance a straight 24k.

Garda joe is probbaly on like payscale 5 at this stage with 35k basic plus allowances, overtime and rent allowance. Nice 40k package i'd say

    Step 5:

brainy teacher is 55 now, got a permanent job like 20 years ago. Rough school though but its permanent!! been physically assaulted a couple of time by parents and students alike but its a job

Garda joe is 55, he's seen some crazy sh*t couple of rough nights been assaulted and abused but today is the last day he has to work for the rest of his life. Lump sum, thanks very much. Half pay thanks alot

Garda Joe has one of the longest and most thorough Police Training courses in the world. He spends 56 weeks training, while in Australia it is 8 months, UK forces 6 months etc.

Garda Joe also runs the risk of being killed every day, contracting disease from needles, being shot, stabbed, crushed, maimed, burned etc.

Garda Joe has to visit scenes of deaths, knock on doors at 3am and tel people someone has died, and work all hours. garda Joe has an 80% chance of being hospitalised in the line of duty at least once in his 30 year career.

Garda Joe has to cart a 3kg stab vest around on him all day while Mr Teacher wears a tweed blazer to his hearts content. Garda Joe often has to stand in the same place for hours on end, or stand in the rain for hours on end. Mr Teacher gets a comfy chair and desk and is regulated by the Dept of Education rule that he may ONLY TEACH FOR 22 HOURS a week, plus time spent correcting and doing other duties.

Garda Joe gets 25 days off a year on top of his shift work - Mr Teacher goes home at 3pm or 4 pm every day and maybe marks some copybooks or researches or does some photocopying. He gets 4 months' holidays per year if he teaches in Secondary Schools.

Biased much, noclue1? Your name really couldn't be more apt ;) Gardaí deserve every penny they earn and more.

if i had a penny for every time you Garda wannabe's pull out this line

i make there's about 15,000 rank and file Gardai in the state now unless road deaths are killing thousands annually and fatal attacks are happening every couple of hours i can't see how this is a common occurence

for all of the above read nurses, again it takes a little more than 56 weeks to become one of them as well and by the way i'm amazed its 56 barely over a year for locktight pensionable always pay rising job with early retirement built in that requires no qualifications

i see why all the guys are over in the Garda Waiting Room http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=1081 including yourself

Why then is it that the construction industry is the most dangerous, resulting in the most deaths. Should the lads on site be getting an allowance for that.

Useless waffle, that's all it is. Are you sure your not a union spokesman.:D

They are avoidable risks. Not much you can do to stop a junkie attacking you.

What's the point in comparing teachers and gardai?? Both do a very valuable job in society but also extremely different.

Oh please, that is just embarrassing now .
Construction has a whole industry around safety and accident prevention and its still the most dangerous industry in the country. That is the simple fact.

    true and true

forget avoidable, forget all the emotive stuff about junkies and aids infected needless pieces of babies bodies and gang land crime that Garda on here spout all the time as if the first thing that happens everyday they walk out of the station is junkie runs at them with a needle

what were talking about here is RISK and you'll find a life insurance policy(a function of the probabilty of death) or an income continuance plan (a function of the probabilty of serious injury) is more expensive for construction workers and full-time farmers.

Why? Because both those workers are at more risk than a Garda, a risk that is assessed by acturial anaylsis not the GRA

lol...get real ..getting 400 points in your leaving doesn't automatically mean you've a high IQ..it just means you have book smarts which is a different kettle of fish altogether.

The gardai should apply here first for part time work.
