Very nice - and very rare here in Ireland.

Looks like an '83 - colour is 'Denim Blue' IIRC. My mother had a Metro of the same colour

That's just off Cypress Grove Road, is it?

    ^ Yep.

Rare cars indeed, I remember seeing a beige one in Clonskeagh until about 2 years ago. Haven't seen it since though. There was a red Kerry reg. one at the Terenure show about 3-4 years ago.

They were really a Honda Ballade though.

They were indeed a Honda although built in the UK. The story went that Honda engineers were shocked when they saw the first UK built ones and that production had to be stopped for rectification.

I remember that they had a shocking drag coefficient and that real world fuel consumption was equally shocking.... They were a bit Toyotaish inside from what I remember - nice smooth engine though - very willing.

Spotted a Vauxhall Carlton Mk1 earlier today on Templeogue Bridge. It was brown in colour and had red plates ('FZH' I think it was). Didn't get a pic though.

The car itself looked alright, but the engine sounded fairly rough though!

Regarding that ZS 4169 Mercedes 230.

I seriously doubt that is an original reg. Around 1986 which was when that plate was issued there were a lot of dealers importing second hand Mercedes like the above from UK. More likely this car is earlier than 1986 and judging from the fact that it is not a 230e it is more likely to be late 70s. Still looks wonderful.

This raises an interesting question. Would a vehicle such as that be eligible for re-registration as a classic (30+)?

Interesting,i suppose it would, though you would want to be a bit mad to change that to a ZV.
Or is it only age plated cars that are eligible for a re-reg?
Anything is possible with the idiots that are at the wheel in this country...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,461 ✭✭✭Max_Damage

I personally think they should get rid of the whole 'ZV' plate thing altogether. Either you have an original Irish car or you don't, no point making it 'pseudo-original'.

I reckon it'll come to an end in 2017 anyway, but you never know...

Judging by the headrests its 1979 or earlier. Could have changed the headrests though!

The car, if over 30 years of age would be taxable and insureable as a classic so there would be no reason to change the registration. The 'original' Irish reg would make it more desirable to some buyers than a ZV or "79 D xxxx"

It was only since 1986 private imports were possible. Prior to that VAT laws made this impossible.

That is an interesting concept! Is that a fridge body?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,811 ✭✭✭✭Slidey

    It looks like a 1017.

I would take the fridge out of the body, with the lift and the car in there you are probably overweight on the front axle as it is.

Disregarding the legal aspect of it, you will end up wrecking the spring bushes and the anti-roll bars have a habit of bottoming out on the ground on those yokes anyway
