As for Galway, no I don't give anything. I'd rather give to Simon or another organisation that provides food and shelter for the Irish homeless rather than giving to some poor Roma woman trafficked here to beg for her "masters".
But that's me.

I agree it is hard to tell which ones are more deserving than others, and in reality we have no way of knowing.

I don't give money to the ones that beg beside the ATM machines. That really annoys me to be honest. You're in a very vulnerable position when you're taking cash out and it can be intimidating if someone is sitting right beside it, staring at you as though its expected you'll give them money just because you obviously have some, otherwise you wouldn't be using the ATM.

I once had a conversation with a young Dublin girl outside one of the shops on Westmoreland St. one night. I had a few drinks in me so I ended up giving her all of my coinage. I got chatting to her while I was waiting for my Nitelink and she ended up telling me that she wished I hadn't given her any money at all. She told me she doesn't get to keep any of it. When I asked her who got the money she clammed up. Made me feel sad.

Then there was another homeless guy I gave money to outside of a club. He was wandering around playing trad tunes on a tin whistle and I couldn't say no. It was only later I realised that when I'd opened my wallet to fish out a fiver for him he'd taken a twenty without me even noticing.

So I don't really give any of them money anymore. There's a homeless guy that begs near where I work and sometimes if I'm going out to get a sambo for my lunch I'll get one made up for him too.

These ones are the worst. On Halfpenny bridge last week there was a lad curled up in a raincoat, tracksuit bottoms. And luminous green brand new Nikes.

I can't afford bloody runners, they're over €100 ffs. I go running in 3 year old ones that are full of holes.

I used to give a euro or two to homeless people. but there are so many in Dublin lately, most of them about as genuine as Nike man, that I can't be bothered anymore, it's sad really that people abuse good will like that chasing a quick buck, and I doubt I'm the only person put off by the multiplication of beggars. It's a bit desensitising, as harsh as that sounds, especially with so many not even homeless at all.

That really, really annoys me. Especially when you know how much money these people rake in from social welfare weekly.

They are still about. They are proactive in asking you for money as in stopping you in the street and asking you. Not like some that just sit at the side of the road.

Some guy asked me for money even though I had just seen him leave his house!
