Matt always tries to unlock doors counterclockwise and ends up double-locking them. When he realises that he's been turning the key the wrong way he only makes one revoution in the correct (clockwise) direction, thereby still leaving the door locked.

So he gives the key to his girlfriend who's able to open the door easily and when she does she looks back at him as though he's pathetic, less than a man.

Years of this happenning regularly has destroyed Matt's sense of self-worth. His girlfriend is gone now. And the house. She took his daughter. He still has the keys though.

Sometimes at night, in the dark, he squeezes them hard to his chest, he hates those keys but they're his only link to a time when he was happy and life didn't feel quite so hard........

Matt wears a Monocle.
