Hi I'm total capper when it comes to this kinda stuff, I currently have an ancient candybar type Nokia and I am looking to buy my first "smart" phone, the desire looks to be my choice. Couple of Qs which may or may not be stupid I dunno? When windows mobile 7 comes out can it be put on to the desire or is the OS that comes with it the only one you can have i.e. are smartphones going the way of pc with different choices of OS? Also is the desire available now if I go into a vodafone store to purchase for bill pay? Cheers!
You can only stick with your current OS. As of now the only phone that cun run more than one OS is the Nokia N900 because of how open it is and even at that you can only get Android to work alongside Maemo. Don't expect to get any Windows Mobile OS running though as it's closed source.

The Desire is still "Coming Soon" on Vodafone and has been for the past month so I wouldn't really bother with them. There lowest price plan is €35 and for that you get an amazing 0 mins 0 texts and 2GB of Data for your troubles.

You can buy it on Meteor for €30 p/m and get 200 Mins 200 Texts and 1GB of data and you won't have to wait until "Coming Soon" whenever that may be.

It all depends if you can get drivers for the hardware for the O/S in question. Some non android phones have been ported but with missing features such as Bluetooth.

I've bought it from meteor but don't have a 3rd party sim. I have however ordered a uk sim so should have that in a few days. I'll post how I get on.

I just put an O2 prepaid SIM into the one I got last Fri and it worked fine i.e. I was able to ring my desk phone with it which means it's unlocked I'd assume.

That's good news, I'll pop in to the store reserving me one tomorrow and test my VF sim, if all goes well I'll buy it :)

I'm thinking Vodafone might only be offering it on 18 month contracts too... haven't heard back on this.

Cheers Party for the reply, bummer of a deal with Vodafone, been with them years and prob is the missus is free to call as we're both vodafone. I'll digest the info, looks like a sweet phone and is very tempting to jump ship from vodafone.....I was thinking of holding on for new iphone but it will prob have wimax/4g which ain't up and running to hot in the country yet and plus prob will be another year and a half before it comes to vodafone. Again thanks for the reply.

The next iPhone with 4G/WiMax? Not a chance that will ever happen. Apple never ever put new hardware in their products, they are always one step behind hardware wise and try to make up for it by software.

I wouldn't say never since the new iphone is quite strongly rumored to be a verizon one and verizon are big into their LTE network. It is properly not going to happen in June though i would agree. It would seem very un-applelike to put such an untested technology into their products however it is very unlike apple to leave an unreleased iphone on a bar floor (ipads being bolted down to tables and the like) so i don't know what to say

Just another quick question actually, in line with the searching for contacts with "ia" brining up Ian and Brian, could somebody tell me if you can search contacts by putting in part of a number? Say if you knew somebodies mobile ended in 4248 but forgot the rest of it, if you put in 4248, can it bring back results of all contacts with this sequence of numbers in their details?

Cabbage desktop does it and it can come in quite handy for various reasons :)

I think if you type it into the phone application it works not sure tho

Meteor Henry Street are holding one for me, but I've already got one...

If you want I'll send you my phone number and you can give me a text when you're heading in. I'll ring them up and cancel the booking in time for you to pick up the phone.

That's if they don't have any others in stock...

Wow, if it's not too much trouble that'd be brilliant.

Yay, got the HTC desire today from Meteor Liffey Valley. Got the phone for 200 euro ish (would have been cheaper if id switched networks) got the connect 25 and a 5 euro internet plan for 250MB all for 30 Euro. Ill be mostly using home office cafe wireless internet. Got google navigator working today too! So far so good

I'm moving up from a Motorola e770v, so naturally this phone is a revelation, considerably thinner than that phone too.
Only getting used to the touchscreen still. Able to read incredibly small text easily so the screen's great. Haven't had a chance to test the battery life.

    Some questions though:
    1. Anyone else with 32bit Vista have trouble getting it to sync? I disabled all non-Microsoft services while installing it and everything, the phone still isn't detecting HTC Sync on the computer.
    2. Whats a good freeware video convertor to use? Same conversion settings as for an iPod? I assume the video player is in with the photo viewer app?

    Download Handbrake.
Use the IPhone profile for transcoding video, I found it worked brilliantly.
I'm sure someone will come up with a profile specifically for the desire but I find this works just fine.

The videos will appear in the photos section, I think it scans the SD card for videos.

I suppose I should really write my Desire review!

Haven't really had it out of the computer much, but "nearly everynight" sounds better than what just about every review says.

    ...and thanks Slaanesh!

I have on id these bad boys on hold with meteor for collection tomorrow. Very excited. Upgrading from my hero (with money back from meteor on that). Looking forward to the bigger screen, snappier performance and the 2.1 apps (might have to get a car to make use of these free sat nav).

Battery could be better but at least with micro usb chargers will be easy to borrow than the hero (or my previous Samsung).

Anyone try out the music player yet? Is it a bit laggy like the Hero's or is there an improvement? Might pick one up today and this is the only thing that would turn me off it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 211 ✭✭djgaillimh

I've found the music player to be pretty good, and not too hard on the battery either.

I'd recommend getting the last.fm app too. Streaming and scrobbling work perfectly with it.

I had the last.fm app but it stopped working after a while and said I had to pay $3 a month!

No lag whatsoever in the music player. Then again I only have about 260 songs loaded until I get a bigger memory card. But it's smooth as butter without any hiccups.

Seems to be a bit of confusion amongst the meteor staff alright. In one store I was told that it's locked to meteor, in another I was told "unofficially" he thinks it's unlocked and in another he wasn't sure.

Has anyone here bought it from Meteor and tried another sim in it to discover it is in fact locked? I still have that one booked for me but would prefer to know rather than making the trip only to find out when I'm there.

got a HTC desire yesterday and its unlocked!! yay! comes with a 4GB card installed!

moved my number to meteor and phone cost €149.99

whats the meteor network like? compared to voda?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,863 ✭✭✭✭cormie

I haven't really been using the Meteor sim really, just have it in the phone and been messing around with the phone, not sure if I've even made a call off it. Would be able to test it as I'm in a good coverage area for both at the moment anyway.

You must have gone for a more expensive plan to get it at 149?

The slight delay on my hero means I never use it. Hero died completely on me yesterday so just heading into carphone warehouse now...hope they've got stock!

Hope you've better luck than me. I've been trying meteor and carphone warehouse stores within an hour's drive for 2 days now and none of them have them, or want to know if it's an upgrade (which it is), and THEN say they don't :(
