Have read about a lot of people getting this issue. Have ordered the official HTC screen protectors from Clove so when they arrive (if this ash cloud will ever go away) they are going straight on the phone and hopefully that will protect my lovely screen.

Why get them from clove when you can get them from htc or expansys??

Bought it on Thursday and haven't put it down since. I'm not generally too keen on expensive phones but this was worth every penny.

Battery life isn't brilliant but I suppose that's the norm nowadays. Would have been nice to see a longer-life battery in there, but I'm sure it will improve once I stop playing with the phone every five seconds.

Only other issue I can think of is the limitation on the number of browser windows you can have open at a time... makes for some annoying moments where you have to stop what you're doing and close down a few of them. Would be a much better idea to support tabs natively.

Loving the widgets and apps. Buzz, Maps, FriendStream and Google Earth are particularly well adapted.

they really don't do the screen justice though; the colours in the pics are very dull in comparison to the real thing

Seems to be a bug with smudgying on your friends stream ;)

    Nice screen shots though.

On the screen protectors. What are people using?
I got the proporta ones (not cheap either) for my Hero and it lasted exactly 2hrs before I peeled it off again. Issue was that it gave the screen a grainy effect particularly when the background is a light colour.

I used to use Boxwave ones for the Palm a long time back. And am considering them again for the Desire - but don't want to waste cash again only to find it has the same problem.

Hi folks, just wondering could somebody please pop over to my thread here: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055886842 and let me know about my questions in post 31 and 34 (post 31 is quoted in post 34 if you're in a rush ;)). It's just I'm very close to buying a Desire and would just like these two posts cleared up to make my mind up and also find out where is best to buy :)

    Would appreciate any help!

Anyone find a proper case. I'd prefer an hard plastic case to take some of the shock out of the inevitable drop in the future. Cheers.

I'm also looking for a case myself, a hard rubber or silicone one, I think this would absorb more than a hard plastic? Also, it would make it non slip which is very important for me as I always seem to knock into tables and things and it stops it sliding around when driving too :)

This phone absolutely outcasts the iPhone. The ability to replace stock features such as text messaging with other applications is fantastic.

Everytime I pick it up to do something on it, I find something else that is so simple and works so well and wonder how hasn't anybody thought of doing this before!! Or maybe they had but we haven't had the hardware capability ;)

    EDIT:::
Just found the first thing I don't like about it (i.e. Android)
Android doesn't support Voice Dialling yet!! Grrrrrr

Noticed that if you set an alarm & then turn the phone off, it will not power on when the alarm time comes round unlike every other mobile I've had. Given the battery life (or lack thereof) that's a big omission I think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,863 ✭✭✭✭cormie

I'm used to that with my current phone, the G900, but the phones I had before would wake themselves up with the alarm and it's definitely a con alright. Can you test how the alarm works when the phone is silent?

I like to sleep and not have to worry about somebody ringing and waking me up, but to be woken up by a time I choose!

Just got one of these yesterday, delighted with it so far.

Quick question, anyone know why the Spotify app isn't available in the Android Marketplace? It's a free app.

That powered off handset/alarm not working issue is a bit of a bummer.

    :(

If the alarm still works (loudly) when the phone is on silent, it wont be so bad, hopefully someone can test it and let us know :)

I ordered mine last night so there's no turning back now.

Also went and got an extra battery, is there any convenient way of charging the spare or is it a matter of inserting it into the phone, charging it and replacing it with the original battery?

@djgaillimh, where did you get Earth from??
I don't see it on the Market? Did you root your handset to get it?
I have being trying to find that with no success...

Do a google search for "google_earth.apk" you'll find a link on one of the pages.
Then use HTC sync and the application installer to install the apk from your pc.
    Works a treat :)

There is an option in the alarm to make it work/sound when the phone is on silent.
Click on clock > Click on alarm > Press Menu > Settings > Alarm in silent mode

Nope they dont. I was told that it wouldnt work on prepay at which point i took out my iphone and said really it would be the same as the iphone wouldnt it? the poor man nearly tripped over himself he backed up so fast haha

It will be available on O2 soon on prepay but to be honest i doubt it will be much cheaper then buying it online sim free since it actually more expensive to buy it on prepay in the UK then buying it sim free

Seems to be a bit of confusion amongst the meteor staff alright. In one store I was told that it's locked to meteor, in another I was told "unofficially" he thinks it's unlocked and in another he wasn't sure.

Has anyone here bought it from Meteor and tried another sim in it to discover it is in fact locked? I still have that one booked for me but would prefer to know rather than making the trip only to find out when I'm there.

That does indeed work. I contacted HTC support who helpfully replied that you have to leave the phone switched on

Obviously very happy with this phone but a few questions if anyone can help me out

    1. It supports micro SD storage up to 32 gb, has anyone seen a microsd for sale anywhere at 32gb? The most I've seen is 16gb
    2. Is there any way to set Opera as the default browswer so that when you click a link in an email it automatically opens Opera instead of the standard one?
    3. Is there anyway to synch bookmarks between firefox on the pc and the phone or any other way of importing bookmarks(HTC Synch doesn't seem to do it)
    4. There seems to be a few free apps not showing up in the app store from the phone, is there any way around this?

I've bought it from meteor but don't have a 3rd party sim. I have however ordered a uk sim so should have that in a few days. I'll post how I get on.

I just put an O2 prepaid SIM into the one I got last Fri and it worked fine i.e. I was able to ring my desk phone with it which means it's unlocked I'd assume.

I got one of these for my N95

I'm sure you can get similar for the Desire.

Hi I'm total capper when it comes to this kinda stuff, I currently have an ancient candybar type Nokia and I am looking to buy my first "smart" phone, the desire looks to be my choice. Couple of Qs which may or may not be stupid I dunno? When windows mobile 7 comes out can it be put on to the desire or is the OS that comes with it the only one you can have i.e. are smartphones going the way of pc with different choices of OS? Also is the desire available now if I go into a vodafone store to purchase for bill pay? Cheers!
