So as it says here, and other places, we will get to vote on the ridiculous blasphemy law introduced by the government we know and love. Unenforced and mocked as it was...

...it's still entirely inappropriate for a "developed" country. And so, even though this place would be slightly biased :pac: im still interested in getting some figures... will you vote yes to removing references to blasphemy from our constitution and increasing our secular status (still more work to be done here), or no?

Which leads to another question, why not go further and add to the docket? If we are a developed country, why not put an end to discrimination and remove some other references from our constitution... like gender. How would you vote to redefine marraige, in a de facto gay rights vote? Yes, or no?

I think these two subjects are linked by the same underlying conservative opposition factor, but I wonder to what extent they would overlap.

Remove references to blasphemy AND gender? 166 votes

YES, remove blahphemy and YES, redefine marraige

NO, leave blasphemy and YES, redefine marraige
    84% 140 votes
YES, remove blasphemy and NO, leave marraige as is

NO, leave blasphemy and NO, leave marraige as is

The proposed blashemphy law would be a joke, if it were even mildly amusing. I can't see it being passed, but then again, when it comes to matters of democracy & elections, I'm usually voting on the losing side.

I'd like to see civil partnerships for gay & lesbian couples in Ireland, but I'd be very doubtful that Ireland has come out that far from under the Catholic stone, that it would happen any time soon.

After all, it's the gays that caused the kiddie fiddling.

Will we be allowed to draw cartoons of allah without muslims issuing death threats against us?

Yes, but no priests doing altar boys. Altar girls, yes, but not boys.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Fine. Let them marry their brains out. What about adoption.

Lets be honest, what normal kid wants to be known in school as the kid with two daddies.

I'm not pro or anti gay, just stating a potential side effect

Umm, its already in effect, since the new year :P

I wonder about gay marraige, I think with the catholic church shooting itself in the foot so much lately, people might pay less attention to its dogma.

With regards to gay adoption, I dont think two dads would leave a kid in a worse off situation than one dad, or one mom, which happens all the time. There are "gender influences" lacking in many irish families anyway. Theres always the school thing alright, but if we're going to move forward as a society, it has to start with the young, right?... Educate them.

If gay and lesbian couples were allowed to enter mainstream society in terms of marriage and adoption, then it wouldn't take long for it to be normal.

Just because some kids, and more importantly the parents who raise them, are closed minded bigots, doesn't mean that gay people should be denied the right to a family. They have as much ability to raise a decent member of society as anyone else. Some will, some will fail spectacularly. Just like straight couples and single mothers and fathers.

The blasphemy law is absolutely ridiculous and needs to go. There's no place for it in a modern secular society.

Would also vote in favour of gay civil marriage.

I'd also like to see the preamble to the constitution removed or changed... this is just silly.

blasphemy law? Seems to me its being introduced so there's no more slagging off the church/priests over the recent controversies...

So what? We don't speak of it it goes away?

We're being punished for telling the truth... Ha! Some religion

Give it a while longer, and people will eventually tire of the catholic church and its daft presumptions. Gays are the cause of the kiddy fiddling? Blame everyone else but themselves if you ask me.

I'm a heterosexual female and I'm all for gay marriage. Lets just all be happy and get on with life.

Worst case scenario.. kid of 2 gay parents is getting hassle off other kid - other kid says, "My Da hates gays - he says he'd kill them all if he got the chance". Kid responds, "Yeah, well my da will f*ck your dad up the ass before he gets the chance".

    I actually doubt that.

Anyway - aren't we supposed to be having a referendum about the blasphemy law?

The blasphemy law is, indeed, ridiculous and it's good to see people protest it; still, this video kinda reminded me of this:

Agreed. Also, do away with clauses that prevent athiests from becoming a judge or president!

Paul Woodfull, i think, is behind the 'Ding-Dong Denny O'Reilly' character; i'm assuming he's performing it under that name. Think he had an album out of similar stuff.

the very notion of a Blasphemy Law is ridiculous.

However, there are going to be Christotaliban like Cóir, David Quinn, Iona Institute et al in shrill opposition to any form of progress. They'll employ the usual scare tactics, maybe putting up posters saying it'll lead to children being aborted, conscripted, adopted by gay married couples and then aborted again.

Never underestimate stupidity and certain people's willingness to be led by the nose.

I hope this passes, but I could nearly see it being 49/51 like the Divorce Referendum in the 1990's, due to the sticks in the mud we have in this country, and I'm sure the RCC will hamfistedly and clumsily stick its oar in and dictate to people what to do, how to vote, desperately clinging on to their influence, which is dwindling alright, but not as fast as I'd like.

Jasus you must have went to a great school as people in my school completely ripped the piss out of each other. I can only imagine what it would have been like for a kid with gay parents. I'd actually say most kids and teenagers are biggeted to an extent. Thankfully most grow out of it.
I don't think it's right for gay parents to adopt as I don't think it's in the best interest of the child. The rights of the child are more important than gay people's rights to a family.

As an Irish citizen I rate my relationship to be equal with all others. By saying that a child shouldn't be adopted by a gay family is homophobic as you are saying that it is an unfit environment for the child. How would you feel if you were told you are not allowed adopt as you are deemed unfit to parent because of your sexuality. Its the bullying that should be dealt with, not reduce the rights of citizens. Why does the school yard dictate policy anyway.

Blasmphemy law is an affront to freedom of speech.

Rather than legalising gay marraige, state recognition of marraige should be abolished imo (it should be a personal thing).

Also, i find it interesting that you mention gender equality but then go on to specify gay marraige. I would see men's lack of rights over their own children as a much larger gender-equality based injustice tbh.

I haven't stated that someone sexuality would deem them an unfit parent.
I feel that a child should be adopted into as normal an environment as possible. Same sex relationship or single parent is not an ideal environment to be adopted into in my opinion.

I don't think it's the government's place to stop a member of any group from adopting children. However, if a private adoption agency wants to specialise in finding traditional families for children i don't think the government has any right to force them to change their policy. Simmilarly, if the birth parents have any wishes regarding the type of family they want their child raised in, i think they should be respected.
