Do people on boards think that they're acting the same as they would in real life? Because I'm convinced it couldn't be more to the contrary. In fact, I think that a lot of boardsies, with their online personas, become people that they wish they were in real life.

So often I reald threads on After Hours that make me a bit sick.

A recent example is the interflora thread about the chap that had the affair...i knew it wouldn't take too long before the houlier than thou brigade arrived... "Serves him right, the idiot" And then the post is thanked by dozens of people...people who of course have never cheated on a partner. Yeah right...

Someone says they downloaded a film... You should go to the cinema...what you're doing is theft ya know...

And loads of people will thank the post...the same people who used surely download music, or taped things off the radio in the past. Hypocrites is the only word for it really.

Another example is this thread - People love to appear to be high and mighty and, I'll say it again, holier than thou....

Absolutely no way they're like that in real life.

Why can't you just be consistant with who you are in real life? Not everyone is perfect and we all make mistakes. None of you have the right to act better than people who are simply more honest than you.
What you are failing to realise is that there are thousands of members on this discussion website. Some believe strongly in not cheating on their partners but at the same time download movies from the net. While others work in reverse. That is why there always seems to be a holier than you crowd around since there is such a diversity of members.

I think alot (far from all though) of posters try to be something that they are not.

These posters stick out like a sore thumb.

They rarely will make self depreciating posts as this would be their ultimate nightmare.

You can tell a lot about a person when you look at the jokes they make.

What makes someone laugh is key to who they are in the real world I feel.

Constant sarcasm is a real sign that someone gets their jollies by putting others down online for whatever reason.

We are all dabble in a little sarcasm but when it's a current theme in someone's posts, you have to question why?

Very few people would get away with being like that in real life.

For instance, if you told someone you got clamped in the real world and they rudely just said: "Tough, should have parked legally, get over it, stop whining .. " etc, they would get a slap or they wouldn't be in your company for very long.

Maybe they try and get a little power trip online?

Bully a few people, insult them and their self esteem goes up.

Pointless trying to change people like that, all you can do is feel sorry for them, that they need to go online to get a power kick to feel good about themselves.

I think genuine people online are quite easy to spot after awhile.

You can't fake a nice personality.

If someone is sound online, then chances are that they are sound in real life.

    Good thread OP.

I'm the same cantankerous annoying smug pr*ck in real life as I am on here.

The only thing my boards persona is missing is my staggering good lucks and intoxicating musk.

I'm the same in real life. Sarcastic, egotisticle, laid back, lovable and sometimes serious.

    Well said Pete.

Sounds like psychoanalysing via t'internet comes easily to you. Your thought process obviously works quicker and less conspicuously but thats the way we all sort the wheat from the chaff. And theres a lot of chaff on the internet t'internet.

    (gotta keep up this persona:o)

BTW, I read threads. And it's easy to spot the posters who don't read threads because they barge right in and repeat the same things that have been said earlier. It seems to me that these people like to talk and can't be bothered listening to what anyone else is saying IMO

    Yup, there sure is.

    Well called.

I think the reason they don't want to listen is because they think their opinion is more 'important' than other mere posters.

    Robs dsmythy's joke :)

Maybe at the Beer's you can all bring score cards and see how close people are to their online persona.

Facekicker should be easy to spot .. :D

I honestly can't tell if I'm the same in real life as I am on Boards. Now I'm all insecure. :(

This thread has just turned into an opportunity for people to take cowardly pot shots at specific posters without naming them.

You took the words right out of my mouth.
I was just about to post the very same thing.

The next poster who does this will be banned.
Take this as a warning, it will be the only one you get.

Getting sly digs in at people just shows you up.

Damn right. Taking personal pot shots at oneself also involves not naming the person!

I'm a lot more introverted IRL but have the pretty much the same standards & tastes etc. You can't expect people to be carbon copies at any given point in time

I'd wager that many regular users here are regular users because they can escape somewhat on boards.

Nobody's the same in every aspect of their daily life anyway. You're not the same at work as you would be on a night out. The same applies here really.. people know when they need to be one version of themselves etc.. in certain threads you know it's not OK to make childish jokes like you might in front of your mates.. and in other more relaxed threads it's fine to be more like another version of yourself

It's stupid to quantify how someone is IRL by judging their online persona.

Fair enough - snide digs is the way to go then, all the better when delivered in the form of complaining about posters having a go at other posters... Irony's enjoyable.
