What are the legalities on pointing a camera through the window of someone elses private residence ?

If they're on your property (your garden) you can tell them to leave, but I don't think you can physically stop them taking photos.

Just pull the blinds down :p

I bought a license once, when the inspector called and asked if I had a TV I said yes. I bought the license to avoid any hassle knowing that I move house every year. I won't pay it until I have to. If you deny having a TV is there anything they can do?

Not really, why do you think they have so many scare tactic ad's - if it was that easy to catch you out, they'd never mention it and make double on fines.

Last time I'm going to say this in a TV license thread.

    Just do not pay it.

There is nothing they can do.

There is no way they can prove you have a TV without going to the Gardai, getting a search warrant and having them raid your home.

    That will not happen.

Is it really necessary to have a TV if you have a computer OP?

Funny enough a computer would come under the requirement for getting a licence.

Any device which is capable of receiving TV signals requires a licence. Not just TVs. It's mad.

only if the computer has a TV card...

EDIT: My sources were wrong :D

Indeed it is only if you have a computer in conjunction with a device which can receive TV signals (aerial, cable, satelite etc.)

right. going to buy 20 of those stamps. get a start on them. They have my name. In fact the inspector arrived the week after our house was built.

It really makes me sick that i could go to jail because Jerry needs his massive wage each week. There really is no honest justice with this. really.

I would not be as pissed of it RTE did not advertise just as much as tv3.

ahhh. pissed off with this whole poxy country .........:mad::mad:

A guy I know his girlfriend answered the the door to an inspector and said yes we do have a telly (dope) any way after a couple of consecuitive unexpected callsl( the front door was not aswered) the man returned with two other men??????? anyway it ws still ot answered and then not long after that a summons arrived. He went to court and had to fork out 350 plus a licence. He over heard the inspector say to the judge "I observed a television set through the window". it would of been cheaper to get some blinds and tell his girl to shut up.

Go to court when you are fined say you can't pay and go to prison, from there you will be taken to mountjoy signed in and told to go home. There is no room for you.

Or you might be unlucky and end up behind bars for a few days, but I doubt it.

You can pay 13 euro per month, it's what I do.

I had no money for oil to heat my house last year. I still haven't any oil, going into the winter, now I have received reminder of tv licence. As you can imagine, getting rid of tv as well as sitting in a cold house is dire, dire final resort. Yes! we wear coats inside all winter. People who aren't so strapped don't realise how important EVERY 10 euros is, constant juggling is going on to try get by. I don't drink or smoke, if I go out with a friend - once a month or so, I drink tapwater. I haven't had a holiday in years, and God knows someone living like this needs a break from it.

I have been looking for work for 2 years, despite being well qualified I get so nervous in job interviews I can't represent myself properly, this stress is adding to the whole problem. I get upset for days after one of these diabolical interviews which has a huge impact on my 2 children. Each extra bill adds to the pressure, I can hardly afford food for my family, all these extra bills like a household charge and tv licence are luxuries. If I had a few extra euro, I'd get oil to heat my house. Sometimes I feel I can't go on.

you are missing an "n" from the end of your username

on a more serious note... try those carrer help fairs that go on once a month. can be really worth it if you put in the effort and get interview help.
its specifically why they do them in this country.
the way i look at interviews is if i dont get the job im no worse off, so take it easy and whats the worst can happen.

Tell them you haven't got a television anymore, done.

Yes, Kenard and 120 minutes, I was in a hurry I have no computer or internet connection, I have to use one of the library computers and people were waiting. The 'n' must have had a crumb or piece of lint sticking it so had to press hard down on it every time I used an 'n' and I hadn't time enough to give each part a really thorough proofreading. However I DO have 90 WPM, n not withstanding.

The choice of name also came up for scrutiny, hmm? Maybe I am tired being so stressed and trying to get myself to calm down. In fairness, it is quite a challenging situation, and I do realise lots of people are suffering poverty, isolation and stress. You don't really understand until you get to do some stressful time there rearing children alone, without any savings.

I have been to the fairs, they are very good. It's just I have previously become choked up during interviews, my face goes red, I look and sound like I'm going to cry. And forget completely anything intelligent or relevant I should say. The more desperate my situation becomes, the more I'm freaking out in interviews. Not the greatest approach but I think I have reached such a level of stress it is difficult to Be Calm.

Fromthetrees, I have heard of tv licence inspectors catching lots of people out on the 'haven't got a television anymore' lie. I haven't any money to pay the bill, never mind the fine. Who would mind my children if I was put in prison?

Well, I have another interview this week, so hopefully the parasympathetic system will NOT go into overdrive this time and I can earn some shillings and be independent again, as help out there is quite minimal really.

But thanks for letting me know about the missing 'n', folks, that was really on the ball and really the most important thing about my post. Boards.ie came up trumps for me.

This thread pops up every few weeks. It's really bloody simple. If they have your name , pay the damn licence or sell the TV , they won't go away. I tried dodging them before and ended up in court with a fine and had to pay the licence.

They have no problem taking people to court over it , they have a specific court set up for it when you go in , tbh now the judge was having a bit of a laugh and joke with a lot of people 'name , reason, fine' and off you go but lads going in who still hadn't bought one and were claiming innocence this that and the other was a higher fine and off to the joy with some of them.

Stamps will not work if the licence is due , they are meant to be used throughout the year to help you save for the licence when it's due they won't accept buying two stamp as anything and won't issue a licence until you have €160 worth of them.

Mines due again this week , pain in the tits I know but it's black and whith I'm afraid.

    This country is a joke.

If you don't want to contribute to Pat Kennys', Mariane Finucanes', Ryan Tubridys' or Joe Duffys' exorbitant pensions and lush holidays - the police come around to your door and throw you in jail.

What a sad little country we live in.

The only sensible thing to do is sell the TV and buy a large computer monitor.
You can disable the tuner in your TV then it is in the same category as a monitor, obviously won't work if it is really basic with no scart or other connections to go to a PC or dvd player. If you sell the TV you might not get as much to get an equivalent monitor, with remote control etc.

Aussies I spoke to recently couldn't believe it....they didn't have to pay tv licences there for the last 40 years or so..
