why are these people on the list yet no member of U2 is? U2 are the biggest band in the world and do a huge amount of humanitarian work? Why does a cranky twat like Van Morrison belong on this list but U2 dont? You may prefer his music but he is renowned as a twat and has not been as influential.

There is no way you can make a list of greatest Irish people and include musicians but not include U2/Bono.

P.S. A musician can never be the greatest Irish person ever.
Bono is the biggest twat to ever come out of Ireland and U2's music is far from influential, it's the same song over and over again

Still no Norris? Tsk tsk.

Aphex Twin is actually Irish. I vote him. or Norris. Despite the fact that they're not on your poll...

In your opinion. they are the biggest band in the world by quite a distance therefore I would say they have been slightly influential. How could they not be? If you dont like them fair enough but there is no way you can claim they havent been influential.

Bono is a twat. fair enough. He still does a **** load of humanitarian work. Criticize him all you want but there is no way you can say he hasnt achieved way more than Van Morrison or Phil Lynnott.

A bunch of musicians and the like being nominated over people who were actually important and made a difference.

You don't even have William Rowan Hamilton or O'Connell up there, for shame.

Some things you don't admit to liking on boards;

1. Fianna fáil
2. The catholic church (or indeed any religion)
3. The daily mail
4. Bankers
5. Bono

This post is so full of FAIL I don't know where to start.

Rory Gallagher and Phil Lynott would comfortably p!ss all over ANY mediocre muck u2 ever produced.

Van Morrison is indeed a TW@T of enourmous proportions but Philo and Rory can not be mentioned in the same breath as u pathetic 2.

That is all.

Rory Gallagher ftw.

No John or Edward Grimes? They're doing for Ireland what the Cheeky Girls did for Romania.

Musically I agree with you about Rory Gallagher. I have Rory albums and I dont have any U2 alnums. I dont particularly like them. That said I dont for a second believe that Rory has had anywhere near the same effect on the world/Ireland as U2. They are the biggest band in the world and for that reason alone they should be on the list.

No Irish musician has ever come close to achieving the success that they have. Fact.

What about Farthy (forty with a Waterford accent) Coats?

He was a great Irish person, what with all his pockets & what not.

Yes, indeed, he did "kick a lof of ass".

So to call Collins an "icon for peace and reconciliation" is not just idiotic, but is to indulge in the depraved rhetoric of Irish republicanism.
