    Soldiers are we,
whose lives are pledged to Ireland,
    Some have come
from a land beyond the wave,
    Sworn to be free,
    no more our ancient sireland,
Shall shelter the despot or the slave.
Tonight we man the "gap of danger",
In Erin’s cause, come woe or weal,
’Mid cannon’s roar and rifles’ peal,
    We’ll chant a soldier’s song

For the non-Irish speaking, shamelessly stolen from wikipidea cause I'm too lazy to translate it myself! Never did understand Bearna Baol though, "Gap of danger" apparently. Go figure!

Oh and the Verse is awesome, but it never gets sung.
"Seo dhíbh, a chairde, duan Ógláigh" *gets fired up*

It would make more sense to rename the political party Fianna Fail to the Irish translation of 'Incompetent Twats'

Leave the anthem as it is.

It's a horrible tune with no history that was just put together because an alternative had to be played at games.
I used to find that "tune" major buttock clinching inducing, but I have to say, a little less so now that it used to. I am actually afraid that I might one day like it.
I wonder will it be one of these things that future generations universally approve of and wonder why folks in the early days had such reservations (e.g. Eiffel tower)?

    take off the republican specs.

We have one of the greatest anthems in the world, one that is enriched with history and pride. It is an honor to sing it everytime I do, and anyone who isn't proud to sing it is an ignorant pig.

As for the "republican specs"? Get over yourself, there is nothing wrong with being proud to be Irish. Not nearly enough people are as proud to be irish as they should be these days. There is of course the high-horse, utter ignorant notion of being republican in 2010 being the same as a supporter of the IRA at the hight of the troubles. Nonsense. It's about time some people get a bit of national pride in themselves, they might even feel better about things if they do!

The French one is better. Although this gap of danger sounds kinda sexy.

I left my republican specs on the bus on Paddy's day. Been wearing an England jersey since without realising. Egg on my face or what?

i think the anthem should be irelands call becoz it has more emotion and means more :)

    Emotion?

Yeah, if the emotion is cringe-worthy shítehawkery.

Keep your Ireland's Call bollocks for your rugby games.

My main (and only) problem with the current national anthem is that it doesn't rhyme.
Any new national anthem should rhyme.
Preferably it should have an Irish and English language version which both rhyme.

a sham to who? i bet u dont even watch rugby like. its an anthem that all rugby lovers sing proudly and if you dont like it well thats your problem

If you had read my post you would seen my immediate acknowledgement of it having multiple meanings. I would suggest in future you read things before proceeding to criticise.

Fianna Fail in Irish means Irish warriors but to over 95% of the population it represents a corrupt incompetent political party that has destroyed our economy and made life a misery for the population. I think it should be removed from the Anthem on these grounds.

Gay meant happy and even previously straight, yet we don't hear it used in that context anymore.

There are multiple examples and we need to upgrade our Anthem to represent modern meanings and language.

I think those grounds are extremely fcuking stupid

    The French one is better.
So everyone says. But as a rugby anthem, it comes well behind either the Scottish or Welsh one.

    how so?

He was telling you your witty retort was boring and ****. He was right.

That song is awful, it was only introduced in rugby matches what, 15 years ago? And it really could not have less to do with our nation's history.

Patriotcally answering mobile phone calls from our very nation while standing very close to other Irish people (in Kiely's of Donnybrook)? I'd say it's pretty relevant to the last 15 years of our nation's history.

I thought our national anthem was like, the Fields of Athenry.
