Change the National Anthem, Amhrán na bhFiann??

Sinne Fianna Fáil...... I know Fianna Fáil doesn't directly represent the party but I think it is national shame to have such words of national disgrace on our National anthem. The swastika represents many things but it is still banned in Germany. Surely if we are to collectivly move on as nation we must begin the cleaning process and as a symbolic act against this political entity we should remove references to it from our National Anthem.

Not since the days of Oliver Cromwell and the Auxiliries (Black and Tans) has any group commited such acts against the Irish people and its economy. What we are witnessing is akin to the Nazi's theft of the Jewish wealth and art which ended up in Swiss banks. Ireland is being bankrupted while the developers and FF elite are creaming off enourmous sums of money at the expense of everyone else. :mad: Cronie Capitalism at its worst

Our national anthem is brilliant and reflects what the country went through to achieve independence. The Sinne Fianna Fáil line does bother me although... there is an alternative version which starts like this "Sinne Laochra Fáil..." where laoch is hero... laochra is heroes.

I like the national anthem. The lyrics are, for the most part, irrelevant. Only a tiny minority of people actually understand them, and most people only sing the last line anyway.

''Fáil'' is an ancient word for Ireland, again in old Irish. Fianna Fáil, in the context of our national anthem, means nothing about Brian Cowen and his merry men but rather refers to brave Irish warriors fighting enemies from beyond the wave.

If you had read my post you would seen my immediate acknowledgement of it having multiple meanings. :rolleyes: I would suggest in future you read things before proceeding to criticise.

Fianna Fail in Irish means Irish warriors but to over 95% of the population it represents a corrupt incompetent political party that has destroyed our economy and made life a misery for the population. I think it should be removed from the Anthem on these grounds.

Gay meant happy and even previously straight, yet we don't hear it used in that context anymore.

There are multiple examples and we need to upgrade our Anthem to represent modern meanings and language.

It's become a bit of a contradiction in itself. Mentioning Fianna Fail and moving on to state "we're children of a fighting race, that never once has known disgrace".. Fighting race? They sing it because they have no choice.

It's a horrible tune with no history that was just put together because an alternative had to be played at games.

I used to find that "tune" major buttock clinching inducing, but I have to say, a little less so now that it used to. I am actually afraid that I might one day like it. :eek:

We have one of the greatest anthems in the world, one that is enriched with history and pride. It is an honor to sing it everytime I do, and anyone who isn't proud to sing it is an ignorant pig.

As for the "republican specs"? Get over yourself, there is nothing wrong with being proud to be Irish. Not nearly enough people are as proud to be irish as they should be these days. There is of course the high-horse, utter ignorant notion of being republican in 2010 being the same as a supporter of the IRA at the hight of the troubles. Nonsense. It's about time some people get a bit of national pride in themselves, they might even feel better about things if they do!

My main (and only) problem with the current national anthem is that it doesn't rhyme.
Any new national anthem should rhyme.
Preferably it should have an Irish and English language version which both rhyme.
