That's why they are making sandwiches and not working in a call centre selling you car insurance of any other job that requires good language skills.

No, "Pat" from New Delhi does that.

To be fair you could speak very good English without knowing a bunch of legal terms and definitions.

of course... I'm Irish and not a lawyer / legal secretary / solicitor / barristor / judge...

Anyway, everyone should speak (one of)the language of the country they live in!

Why? You could feasibly live (for example) in a community in an English speaking country whereby you didn't need a word of English in order to fulfill your jobs and your daily interactions.

By comparison there are people born in this country (both in urban and rural enclaves) who (supposedly) speak English fluently but that you'd be lucky to understand half of what they were saying. Should their entire communities be sent back to school for elocution lessons?

My own opinion is that I think people should only have to be able to speak the native language if not having it is interfering with the implementation of their job or tasks in their daily lives. e.g. in the case of the guy who dies a little every day he orders a sandwich (that could just be the cholesterol btw)..

I wouldn't go to live in another country without having a proper grasp of the language.

Come on, where do you think the English language would be on the world stage with such a respectable approach? Fortune favours the brave. Beat the sh it out of the natives and ram your language down their collective throats for centuries and hey presto there's no need to make the effort to learn their language. It's all remarkably civilised, old bean.

    Yeah, he should

In the English language we generally use the pronoun 'she' when referring to ladies.

Is Pat one of the ones that got confused by the ads looking for someone to "fulfill a challenging role in New Delhi", thinking he was going for a job in a sandwich shop?

Don't be such a bleeding heart liberal. She's driving a powerful car, I think its fair for the rest of us to expect her to be able to read roadsigns.
