Have to say I disagree. Im one of Carricks biggest fans (see this thread before kickoff yesterday for an example) but he had an awful first half yesterday, and only a decent second half. His free kicks were awful, he was really slow both on the ball and in picking out his passes, and picked up a silly yellow card to top it off. He won't have as bad a game for the rest of the season.

    fair enough.

i really didn't notice him being poor.

he was quite languid and deliberate, but that's his style. he's never really been the quickest on the ball. plus he got himself into decent attacking positions, and if not for Friedel would've had a goal.

he didn't misplace much from what i could tell either.

Im also a Carrick fan too but i really think he isnt playing his best stuff lately. His performances against Arsenal in the Emirates and City in the Carling were what he is capable of but we havent seen it enough this season. He is still a very valueable player for us.

For those of you who (like me) were intrigued by Achie's sig:

    LOL wothy:
-Wes Brown's attitude during the pointing.
    -Nani's "freestyle" dancing.
-Rafael having no idea whats going on.

SSN: Rooney on SSN now doing England press conference

I too am a fan of Carrick and think he gets a lot of abuse here when we as a team play bad.

But, and this applies to nearly all of our players who take set pieces, the corners/free kicks this season have been pretty ****e. We are no longer a threat from them, even including direct free kicks, and I really think its something we need to address. So frustrating when we have a chance and then it leads to a corner, I almost switch off and hope we can get back to attacking from normal play.

Rooney Player of the Year again
England forward Wayne Rooney has taken another piece of silverware after being voted Nationwide England Player of the Year for a second year in succession.

With almost 40 per cent of the vote, Rooney was a clear choice from the thousands of fans who decided upon the star performer of 2009 in the online poll on TheFA.com.

Playing in nine of England’s eleven matches, scoring six times, Rooney was an integral part of the key games that saw Fabio Capello’s men clinch qualification for the World Cup.

Scoring in crucial victories over Kazakhstan and Andorra, Rooney was also on target against Croatia in the crushing 5-1 victory that sealed England’s place in South Africa.

To end the year on another personal high, Rooney captained his country for the first time in the friendly with Brazil.

On receiving the prize, Rooney said: “It's a great honour that the fans have voted for me for a second time. I want to thank them again for all their support and backing.

“The first time I won was a special feeling for me, and this is just as good. I've always given everything for my country and it's nice to know the fans appreciate your performances.

“Last year was very positive for England, we qualified for South Africa which was our main aim, and we put in some really promising team performances.

“Hopefully we can build on that form and get better and better this year, most importantly of all at the World Cup.”

    The FA

A Football Association tribunal has agreed a sum of £500,000 to be paid by Burnley to Manchester United for defender Richard Eckersley.

Eckersley joined the Clarets last year on a four-year contract after he turned down an opportunity to stay with the Premier League champions.

The 20-year-old, who has yet to appear in the Burnley first team, was claimed to be worth more than £1m by United.

But the tribunal ordered the club to pay half that amount plus add-ons.

Burnley chief executive Paul Fletcher told the club website: "We thank the tribunal for taking a common sense approach to this.

"When the smallest club in the league tries to take on the biggest club in the league you always wonder how it's going to end up.

"We have always valued the player around the £300,000 mark until he starts establishing himself in the first-team.

"When Manchester United were asking a million-plus we thought we had to stand up and be counted and that's what we did."

300K for a player United wanted to keep?!! The add ons better be good as if he makes it in the england squad one day (you never know!!) we should be getting 3 Million for him!

    http://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/manchester_united/s/1194251_fergie_villa_couldnt_handle_valencia

    saf on val and PL
Sir Alex Ferguson was the first to hail the stupendous goal-scoring form of Wayne Rooney this season after the Carling Cup had been locked away once more in the Manchester United trophy cabinet.

But Ferguson did not forget another player who is becoming a vital component in United's quest for a glorious treble, even if he did not trouble the headline writers despite walking off with the man-of-the-match award in the Carling Cup final.

His name is Luis Antonio Valencia Mosquera. Or plain Antonio Valencia to football fans.

Four of Rooney's last five consecutive headed goals, including the winner against Aston Villa at Wembley, have come courtesy of precision crosses from the United winger.

Several more of Rooney's 28 goals this season have been smashed home after assists from the former Wigan wide man darting down the right and threading the killer ball into the penalty area. Indeed, he is fourth in the Premier League's official assists table with nine.

And now Valencia has a major medal in his pocket Ferguson is confident United's fans will begin to see even more from the shy 24-year-old, who carries the millstone of having been bought to replace Cristiano Ronaldo and who cost £16m from Wigan in the summer.

Ferguson said: "He needed that win. He knows he's at the right club and seeing the celebrations at the end was really good for the boy. He's developed all season and improved all the time. It's fair to say they (Aston Villa) couldn't handle him in the second half.

"On the counter-attack we always had them by the throat really. He gave the Villa defenders a real hard time of it."

It has been a rapid rise for Valencia, who endured an underprivileged childhood in Lago Agrio, Ecuador, before starting his career at El Nacional.

He moved to Spanish league team Villarreal in 2005 but spent most of the next year on loan to Recreativo de Huelva before arriving, initially on loan, at Wigan.

    Valencia ability

In three seasons at the then-JJB stadium Valencia scored seven goals. He has notched that many at United in two thirds of a season.

But it is his ability to give United an 'out-ball,' in the manner of Ronaldo and Ryan Giggs, which has impressed Ferguson most.

"Every player knows where Valencia is in the team," explained Ferguson. "You get those switches of play and Scholesy (Paul Scholes) is continually finding him, getting the ball to him.

"It gives you great relief if you are in front. You know he can take the ball right to the byline and make them defend which is a great asset to have.

"He works his socks off. Well built, good stamina. He's done well for us."

It is all the more impressive because Valencia does not possess the eye-catching skills of Ronaldo. No step-overs. No fancy tricks. Instead, his game is based on hard graft, pace and the ability to deliver the telling cross.

They are talents which have earned 40 caps for Ecuador and which are flourishing as United wind things up at the business end of the season.

The Carling Cup is retained, they are poised one point behind leaders Chelsea in the race for the title and next week face AC Milan at Old Trafford with a 3-2 advantage from the first leg of their last-16 Champions League tie.

No wonder Ferguson is wearing his trophy-winning face.

He said: "At the turn of the year you have to focus and make sure you don't make mistakes. We lost a game last week to Everton and I think we were a bit tired but we recovered. We have shown time and time again that this football club has the determination. They don't give in and it's a good quality to have. I think you'll see that in the remaining part of the season.

"It was a good result for us on Saturday with Chelsea losing, and Arsenal are now bang in the frame. They've got the easiest programme on paper and it will be an interesting run-in."

one of the best buys of summer imo, being honest I wasnt expecting much from him in his first season at utd but iv been well put in my place by val, he is just going to get better and better

    Re: Carrick's performance yesterday
As one of his bigger critics (6'3"), I would say he was shockingly bad in the first half but looked like he'd gotten a bit of a blow dry at half-time and became a lot more solid and the only shocking thing he did in the second half was beat a player and take a decent shot. In fairness, he's rarely as bad as he was in the first half, but the most you can expect from him is to just be solid. He should be a backup player but unfortunately we've fook all options in midfield. An investment here in the summer, would drastically improve the team, IMO.

AON are in next season. I can't see us keeping the same jersey next year, thats why you are seeing some places selling them cheap.

This seasons jersey was only ever for one season. Much like the white collored one from a few seasons ago I actually think this, and that, have been our best jerseys for ages and they only get 1 season. Bah humbug.
