Boards Collaboration

Just got this idea from reading one of the posts (Rockshamrover who asked does anyone collaborate online), and it got me thinking would the good people who frequent these pages be interested in collaborating on an original song.
I know it's been done here before with a cover and people all met up but what about an original and solely online?
I'd gladly put one of my tracks up for it if there is any interest.
Not sure how exactly to go about it but format could be as follows:
    1. Upload a basic track, maybe just simple guitar and vocal.
    2. People suggest what part/s they would like to take on
    3. Somebody (more qualified than me) take on gathering files and mixing duties.
Everything open to opinions and suggestions of course
    What say you?
    J

I'll sign up for this... I can do drums/programming & maybe some rhythm guitar (if we're really really stuck!)

Is the intent to work on somebody's existing original music?... or would we make it up as we go along?... e.g. start with a rhythm/drum section, then somebody else puts down a bassline, then guitars, keys & whatever? Could be fun that way

What'd be really worthwhile for me is if the "musicians" amongst us lay down the tracks then maybe one of the "engineer/producers" who was willing to mix the whole thing.

    Any thoughts?

yeah im up for it- an original only though.

    guitars- vox-lyrics

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 370 ✭✭Jabel

How about if I upload a verse and chorus only, again simple guitar
and vocal, that way someone else can write a second verse, bridge
e.t.c and the direction of the song wont be set in stone.
I'm primarily a bass player but if someone wants to have a go at
    bass I'll stand aside
    Thanks for the interest

    Interesting idea:D

Would the participants all have to use the same DAW?

I don't think so... we'd all be just outputting wav/mp3 files from our own DAWs anyway, so they can be just imported into any other DAW.

That'd work fine, just trade stems and/or midi tracks.
How are you thinking of sharing out the files? Google documents now accepts binary files, and you can share them from there to a select group: you can store up to 1GB each, and delete stuff when it's consumed.

I'd be up for laying down some keys (pianos, analog synths), orchestrations, etc., but what's the style, what's the plan - Eurovision 2011? :)

    Ok then,
We have the guts of a 'band' there so to start the ball rolling
I'll put up a track deliberately played and sung badly (wow, now
there's a get out!) so it will have to be redone, it will be purely a guide
and just a verse and chorus.
Will put it up on myspace and might also try rp's suggestion
of Google docs though I'm not quite sure how that works.
Do we have anyone willing to combine all files and create
a mix or maybe we could all do our own versions?
Hope to have it up tonight, if not tomorrow night
    Cheers

Cool, will you create separate mono stems for vocals and whatever it is you're using for accompaniment?

Google docs is easy, you just need a gmail account, and click on the "Documents" link at the top, and upload & share stuff.

Hey Jabel... are you going to put up a basic verse/chorus? I'll throw down some drums/loops down & then Eoin can do his thang on the bass... he's a nifty player as I recall from the cover version session we did out in Trackmix's studio...

Apologies for the delay in putting this up everyone.
I've used Google Docs and picked a song I have
already practically finished which should provide
an interesting comparison when this collaboration is finished.
As I stated before this is basic guitar and vocals,
not particularly played or sung to the best of my ability
but it will give you a feel for the song I hope.
If anyone need lyrics or chords I can post these also.
    Time signature is 4/4 & 118 bpm.
    Good luck with it

I don't have time to participate in this but seems like fun.
You should really use drop box for this.
If you set up an account and give everyone involved access to the public folder, the folder will update on every computer when there is new stuff added.

please advise if anyone gets the files? no links to wavs for me following the link

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,141 ✭✭✭eoin5

henessjon I got it on the second time trying. Try opening it in a new tab maybe.

Is it just one verse and chorus youve put down and we decide on structure here or did something happen with google docs? I only got a minute and a bit.

    Nice stuff btw.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 370 ✭✭Jabel

    Ok
I set up a Dropbox account and put files there also but I think you need to have email addresses to share with others. If those interested in participating want to PM me I'll add them to the shared list. Have not used this before so please correct me if I'm wrong.
Again it's just one verse and chorus, I could put up more if things hit a wall at some stage but this is all about collaboration so people can add their own bits.

HI folks... I'll def have a bash at this...

Jabel... just PM'd you my details.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,455 ✭✭✭ZV Yoda

I managed to download those 4 x wavs from Google docs on 2nd attempt. Sounds good.

So how do we want to kick this off? How about if Jabel posts up the full track with vocal & acoustic guitar only. At least then we have a full structure & can then start to layer it up. Next, I can throw down drums/loops. After that, Eoin can put down bass, then John can do his thang?

Unless you wanted somebody else to write/sing a 2nd/3rd verse/chorus bridge etc?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 370 ✭✭Jabel

    Hi guys
Just added you to Dropbox sharing.
You should get an email providing a link to folder.
    Hope this works
    Good luck

If the consensus is to post a complete track, I'll do that later tonight.
Having said that if anyone wants to have a bash at writing
a second verse/bridge or whatever feel free.

    Tune!
    Dropbox works pretty well too.
I'll see if it need keys -- but from a first listen, it might be better to stay minimalistic though.
Perhaps I can do a remix?

    Full track in dropbox now.
Added a small bit of piano too.
Song builds towards end then quietens for last vocal line.

I'm trying to drag the guitar track into Logic and I get the following error message, "The audio file “Rage Guitar&Vocals.wav” has a 32 bit format and can’t be used."

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

    Hi Denis and Chris,
Thanks for the responses. I've never imported stuff into Logic before so maybe it's just the way I'm trying to do it or maybe the original file is not logic file or compatible with Logic.

Jabel will no doubt confirm all soon. (He just did)

I think Logic is 16 bit and or 24 bit so maybe that's the issue.

Is there anyway to convert a 32bit file to a lower bit?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,472 ✭✭✭Rockshamrover

Hi folks, I am in the middle of updating my take on the song to Dropbox.

I just did some drums, bass and a bit of guitar at the intro. All first takes and may not be the direction you were thinking of Jabel, Electro grunge with industrial metal and a dash of ambient jazz:D

    Be gentle on me.

Sure there is, but you'll be doing it with every file. You should just ask the generator of the file to bump it down to 24 or else he'll also be converting back.

In other words move the project to 16 or 24. No need to fo something like this at 32. And is this 44.1/32.... Seems especially pointless to me.

    caveat
my opinion - my personal taste - on content only

ok i listened the drums i like, the bass is not for me

so a general question how are we going to collaborate how can i cherry pick the bits for my version?

i see rockshamrover put a single file up?

i would like the collab files put up individually

Good question. I wasn't too sure how this thing was going to be done. I assumed we'd all throw up ideas and then decide which direction the song should take. I find it hard just to do one element hence my thing.

Maybe we could all throw up a rough overall idea and then cherry pick from that.

    How does that sound?

ok I already asked jabel about separating out certain pieces ..

I can put some sketch ideas up but there is a problem generally with deciding by committeeee...

My opinion is that everything goes up and user decides... but Im no drummer ,,,,

or is the idea that we sketch the ideas and then redo everything to the end product using same files after doing "the canned take"

apologies if im not explaining properly in good english

I like the idea of everything going up and then mixing and matching to your own personal taste.

We could then all post our final mixes of the finished track.

I think putting up seperate files for each instrument is the way to go alright.
I put up a combined file to start as an overall guide of sorts and thought people would re-record everything, (I didn't feel some parts of guitar and/or vocals were good enough) but no matter.
I'll upload seperate files of guitar, vox & piano as soon as I can.
Space will get tight with only 2gb on Dropbox so it might be prudent to 'stuff' or 'zip' files before uploading.
Rock, I had a listen to your piece (it's a strange experience hearing a different take on your song, but a good one!) and liked the drums and guitar at the start but wasn't keen on the bass - sorry!
This will be fun and I can't wait to hear the other stuff the guys are working on. Creating a few different mixes will be great.
    Cheers

I just uploaded a section of the drums to save space. You can copy and paste if you want to use it.

Same for guitar intro. Sounds a bit noisy on it's own but it'll be alright in the mix:D

You can dump the earlier yoke which includes the dodgy bass.

I will put something up tomorrow night probably bass, guitar and vox of some sort

if it gets heavy on the dropbox load we can send a link to download via yousendit

in fact i would prefer that every one involved can use the link for 7 days,
