Other people standing for the National Anthem

I was in the pub the other night, and as it was a live music situation the National Anthem was played last. Most of us stood for it, however there was a group of Spanish students at the table next to us who decined to do so. After the Anthem was finished, a group of men wandered over to the table and started giving the students hassel for "disrespecting Ireland" - nothing violent or anything mind, they just seemed annoyed by it. I found this quite odd, as surely these same lads wouldn't stand for God Save the Queen if they were at an event in the UK now would they?

So what about ye? Do ye get upset when you see people sitting for the anthem, or could ye care less?

I wouldn't stand for it myself unless the venue and occasion was appropriate - no matter if some bonehead had a problem with it.

I don't stand for the anthem unless I'm at a sporting event. I certainly wouldn't stand for it if I was in the pub watching a match. I used to go out with a guy from the north and we were in a pub in Omagh and the National Anthem came on at the end. I just sat there and everyone else got up and actually put their hands on their hearts like feckin Americans. I reluctantly stood up and my bf was furious that I didn't sing along or put my hand on my heart...I was busy enjoying my drink!

I think it's wrong to impose your own values on people. I would stand for the anthem but I wouldn't get a self righteous thrill from giving out to those who didn't.

I'd be more annoyed at the idiot bands/DJ's sometimes even just a CD that plays the stupid song at a pub. I'll stand for it at a sport event etc... but not just because it's last orders in my local or the god awful DJ at the 21st doesn't have anything else to play except Rock the Boat, come on eileen and the national anthem.

I play the anthem at the end of the night to signify that its time to go home. Most pubs expect it and the few rare occasions that i didn't play it the punters were not happy. I'd prefer to play something else, but its not worth the hassle.

If they were booing or something you could see people getting annoyed, I would myself if that was going on. But just because they didn't stand up they were given hassle?

Nothing worse in a niteclub or bar tbh as a night ender tbh it's pathetic.

As for sporting events on tv in a pub, I might stand or sit, but always silent and still. No drinking/talking etc during the anthems.

However I would also always respect the anthems of other countries too, including God Save The Queen, something which many Irish seem unable to do.

if it was at a match they should stand, but not in a pub, they probably wouldn't have known what it was if everyone around them wasnt standing up . . .

That's what I was wondering myself. If a group of Irish stayed sitting down and got hassel for it I would understand (it would still be idiotic but at least it would be consistant), but these Spanish students were just sitting quietly while it was played. For them to get the hassel that they did from these angry, drunken boors probably put a dampener on their whole night - a fine way to make tourists coming over to spend their money here in these recessionary times feel in our country.

The question I had to ask myself of the men who gave them grief was would they practice what they preach if God Save the Queen came on in a pub while they are in England? I think not...

To be honest, I love Ireland and take pride in everything Irish, (Flag and Anthem) but in my personal opinion, the anthem has no place in pubs or clubs. I find this alittle more disrespectful then a group not wanting to stand for it in the first place. If I'm in another country where there is an occasion for playing the national anthem, I'll atleast have the courtesy to stand as a mark of respect, even if it is god save the queen (I'll be cringing afterwards though).

Its just a song at the end of the day, the Spaniards probably had no idea what our anthem even sounds like, I doubt most people here crying about national pride would know what the Spanish national anthem is unless it was pointed out to them

I don't stand up for the anthem. It's nothing to do with not being respectful, it's just not something I value or feel is important. If I'm in company that feel it is disrespectful, I leave the room and go to the loo.
That way I feel that I'm not being a hypocrit.

I would expect them to be respecful though...If the place is silent, i would be pretty annoyed if they continued talking...

It really p**sses me off to be honest, il use one of last christmass get togethers for a rough example. The pub is fairly packed, people are mostly drunk, the national anthem comes on. Idiots who dont even know the words doing their best to be heard over everyone els, then more idiots start shouting F*ck the brits and tiochaigh ar la and all sorts of crap like that.
meanwhile my English girlfriend of 7 years has to pretend it doesnt bother her while my english Brother in law whos just visiting for xmass wants out of the pub.

Then i start getting an earfull for not standing with hand on heart to that?
Yeah sure, why not. And then ofcourse its all my fault for all hell breaking out.

The national anthem has lost all meaning at that stage.

Wouldn't stand for it in a pub in a fit. I remember some friends were over from England and they wanted to go somewhere with Irish traditional music - unfortunately the "trad session" in the pub we chose was rebel songs, complete with "up the 'ra" chants. It was horrible, but my friends were really polite about it and insisted on staying there.
The humorless main band guy kept telling tales of oppression from... 200 years ago etc. I went from embarrassed to quite angry. When the national anthem kicked in, I was the only one sitting down, my friends told me to cop on or I'd get grief (they probably weren't wrong) and my English friends were uncomfortable about it. Best thing to do in those situations is just go outside and wait for your friends.
