    Ireland's Call

It's nice to see the usual revisionist; Kevin Myarse-John Waters-Ruth Dudley Edwards types are here making their presence felt.

I assume you're attempting to discredit my opinion by association with more extreme and objectionable views ? Well tough - it won't work.

Amhrán na bhFiann is more than soldiers fighting, it's about defiance, it's about not putting up with ****.

Slightly off-topic, but it probably shouldn't include the phrase "fianna fail" so.

So what if people don't sing the whole song, they sing the part that matters.

Nice deflection. I take it that you didn't know the words, or maybe didn't even know that the rest of the song existed ?

The fact is that it's a song from the past; of it's time.

Mind you if people were serious about their love of Ireland, then "shoulder to shoulder, we'll answer Ireland's call" would be far more appropriate nowadays - a bit of thinking of Ireland as a whole and not mé fein and not money and not corruption or power or party would work wonders.

lived in wales and they taught Irelands call was pile of sh ite

    same with french when there

however everybody i knew from there said our national anthem was class and it is.

The Soliders Song will always be the real song

Irelands call should be played in eurovision where it belongs.its utter rubbish.

Give over. We've already pointed out that all Anthems have violence in them. The American one is about fighting the Brits dont ya know. (O Say) Can you see?

LOL. Donegal played Derry in a Ulster Semi Final the day Ireland played Spain in the World Cup in 02.

Nobody was bothered in the pub about Donegal.

    People are funny like that.

i remember that, plan that day was to stay in pub after the WC match to watch the GAA which was on straight after wards, ireland lost and 3 qtrs of those crammed into the abbey hotel (co incidently donegals sponsors at the time) went home, i stayed on with a few other lads but atmosphere was not the same

    sad sad day

    :(

Ireland's call is inspiring and far better than the violence-inspired "Amhran na bhFiann"
The last thing we'd want is to inspire violence at rugby.

Flower of Scotland is a stirring song about a nation standing up to oppressors against terrible odds. Rubbish like Ireland's call isnt even in its league. I dont blame Phil Coulter though. It was a no win situation for the song writer. The thing that makes anthems great is the history attached to them. His job was just to write a popular singalong type song that a stadium can belt out before a match. It was never going to be classy.

Ireland's Call is an awful song. Might be good when you're off your tits in a pub surrounded by lads in rugby jerseys watching BOD and ROG sweep to victory... But Ireland's national anthem is Amhrán na bhFiann and it should be the only anthem played at Irish games (be they Gaelic, Rugby, Soccer or any other sporting discipline).

And just as a point, most national anthems are rooted in violence and a country's history. La Marseillaise has to be one of the most blood-thirsty and yet totally enthralling national anthems around!

I like Flower of Scotland, I think it's a lovely wee song. Ireland's call has never really appealed to me on any level. I'm not one for "national anthems" anyway. TBH i find it cringe-worthy to listen to Amhrain Na bhFiann. Not due to the actual song itself, but just national anthems in general.

I fully appreciate that Amhrain na BhFiann is the national anthem of the REpublic of Ireland, as the Irish Rugby team represents both the republic and Northern Ireland (UK) I support the fact a neutral song is sung before games.

One of the lads said that games played in Ravenhill should have God save the Queen followed by Ireland's call. I'm glad that doesn't happen.

I mean, even the translation is "Soldier's Song", so how the hell can it represent the normal people of this country who aren't soldiers ?

Do you have the same issues with La Marseillaise, originally called "War Song for the Army of the Rhine". I mean I'm no expert but I doubt too many French people alive today were stationed on the banks of the Rhine during their lifetime, or fought in the French civil war, so it similarly can't represent the normal people of France yet they don't seem too ashamed of their anthem, so why are you so opinionated about ours?

    Er, because it's "ours" ?

I've no right to dictate to France what they do or don't sing, but I can certainly have an opinion on what we have to.

I'll accept that it's ours; I'll even play it on occasion at the end of a gig, depending on what type of gig/crowd, but I don't have to love it.

Considering how most national anthems are based on songs over 100 years old, just how many are relevant to the modern citizens of these states living in the 21st century, as was your complaint of Amhran na bhFiann? Can you give many example of anthems which meet your criteria for relevance?

Both songs are muck and personally i think its a disgrace for irelands call to be played along with Amhrain Na Fhian...Should not be allowed and it disprects our national anthem.

The six nations rolls into town every year.

Anyway, these two got another airing yesterday.
They really are desperate beyond belief.

It was funny to hear players saying how proud they were to play for Ireland in interviews during the week. Then they don't even play the Irish anthem. Mockery of a collection of ****wits.

How do you know this if you've only been on boards for a couple of months?

Ireland's call is muck. Flower of Scotland is amazing, however.

Well thankfully now that Ireland are losers again we won't have to hear so much of the rugby chaps (or Irelands call) for another few years.
