I know if you want to access the menu of a coke machine with the big half can buttons hit the 4th button, 2nd, 3rd then 1st. I have yet to find one I can do something decent with though. Most menus are locked but for how cold the machine is and how much money is in one!

If they haven't locked the machine you can test the change release and can release mechanism!

Oh press the coin return to leave the menu!

Never done physics no? I dunno if they're electromagnetic waves or sound waves or what, but apparently it does work...
This is an awesome comment, you must be joking?!?
    Never done physics no?
You give this extremely condescending comment like you really know what you're talking about and then you come out with the most half arsed 'physics' explanation ever!

You sir are a genius, I can imagine Stephen Hawking coming out with this in his sensual, sexy voice!

    I've seen this work.

    We used a crowbar.

Don't know why everyone doesn't do it to be honest.

Is it that hard to believe that electromagnetic waves created by sparking that part of a lighter can affect the mechanics of a vending machine? I'm going to try it today, if I can find a lighter. No harm in it anyway.

Think ill stay with shoving my arms up the machine and having a an oul root about.

Old ways are often the best.

I think homeopathy works for opening these as well.

You leave a key in a vial of water for a day and then after that a drop of that water on any lock will open it.

True story. A cousin of a neighbour's friend did it and he got, like, 5 free cans of coke and it cured his cancer too.

    Yes......very.

Sounds like some sort of EMP weapon you're talking about, not a lighter spark.

Considering a wire inside the machine can operate unaffected by the active wires beside it, i really can't see a lighter spark from outside the machine having any effect.

Im sure if the owner of these machines came out and seen you, with your pants around your ankles, lovingly caressing the machine and licking it, The owner may just give you whatever you want from the machine so you will go away.

I saw a lighter once that projects a picture of a lady's bottom from the end of it so how come you can't believe that one would be able to remotely activate a vending machine in order to get free goods?

    Oh yeah, I know why - cause it's a load of horsesh*t. That'd be it wouldn't it?

Never seen this done with vending machines but I know something similar was used on arcade machines back a few years ago, no longer works though afaik. Basically all it was, was using the old stove lighters to fool the machine into thinking you had deposited a coin, it definitely worked though and this sounds a lot similar.

Used to do it on old arcade machines with a coin with a hole drilled in it and a bit of fishing line put through it. You could put it in and hit the credit button a few times to get extra games.

That was in the 80's though. I'd presume it wouldn't work now.

Yea, this was most likely early or mid 90's. And the long nose stove lighters, stripped at the front could be inserted into the coin slot and each click would give you a credit. Did a little digging online to get some info about it here, apparently on a lot of the machines back then the coin mechanism wasn't always grounded and could be exploited like this. Of course the arcade makers soon copped on and started to ground them all and it no longer worked.

The bastards. How am I supposed to get free games of Choplifter now?

It's impossible to believe that a little spark from a lighter produces electromagnetic waves that affect the mechanics! If you want I have a rock that keeps tigers at bay? Something to do with the rock waves affecting the tiger's internal particle spread, it's yours for €100?
I'm going to try it today, if I can find a lighter. No harm in it anyway.
Loads of harm in it, if by some chance you are right and the electromagnetic waves created by sparking that part of a lighter can affect the mechanics of a vending machine(can't believe I said that), then your phone or ipod in your pocket will be affected as well redulting in loss of them both for the sake of a free can of soda pop, and lets not forget about the perfectly good lighter you sacrificed for the test, which may I point out was probably more expensive than the drink!

If you rock it front to back you risk it falling on you. A few people actually die from this every year. Giving it a few shoulders from the side (trying not to tilt it) might not be as instantly successful, but i get the impression it's far safer. Also you shouldn't be stealing tbh.

(12 December 1998, Canada) A man crushed beneath a vending machine while trying to shake loose a free soda? If you thought it happened only in Urban Legends you're wrong!

Kevin, a 19-year-old Quebec student, killed himself at Bishop's University while shaking a 420-kilogram Coke machine. He had been celebrating the end of final exams with friends. He died beneath the soda machine, asphyxiated, with a blood alcohol level slightly over the legal driving limit. Kevin's last act was committed in vain. "Even as it fell over, the vending machine did not let out a single can," the coroner reported. Soda-holics take note! The report also states that toppled vending machines have caused at least 35 deaths and 140 injuries in the last twenty years.
