What do you think of 'society' today?

You hear a lot a the breakdown of society and morals but do you really think things are any worse today than they were 50, 100, or 500 years ago?

Personally, in regards to 50 years ago at least, there are definitely appears to be less consideration given for the fellow man/woman on the street. But then then there also is more of a light shone on issues like financial scandals, paedophilia etc. today than what had went on in the past. Possibly, this could be a reason why society today looks bad in it's own time.

It's all to do with the dregs of society, if that part of society didn't exist then we'd be sorted, but probably socialist

Especially on Boards - by 19-year-old wannabe curmudgeons.

Society has its problems of course, but reports of it "going to hell" are greatly exaggerated.

I'd recommend starting your research in the political buildings in Dublin.
They have been shafting in that general direction for years and have decades of first-hand knowledge on "Analisation of Modern Society".
Its now "us" and "them" more so.

( is "Analisation" even a word? From an editorial point of view, that's the first thing they will pick on.)

    There are two issues here.

Firstly, there are so much more emotive news stories in the media than there were before. BUT this does NOT mean that there is so much more crime going on. It just means more of it is getting reported and it's getting reported in such a way that it makes poeple think that society is a lot more scumbaggery now than it was in the past.

Secondly, However, there is a lot mroe care in society these days: if little Jimmy can't learn his Irish or wets the bed, he's far more likely to get a little reassurance and compassion now that he would thirty or fourty years ago.

The problem is that the use of fear as a control or deterant is no longer working and there's no plan B, other than use more fear. It worked in the past because there was no accountability and a high level of ignorance. People didn't ask questions when they should have. Fear can only work when there is ignorance. Now, in a world of multi-media, internet and so forth, everyone can access pretty much any information they want. We KNOW more about the authoritative fgures than ever before, and we know that they are NOT automatically right. We are no longer ignorant. We know that the priest is not automaically right. Pandora's box has been opened, and there is no going back.

This is why I'm of the opinon that you need to sort out these kids and find out what they want BEFORE they become teenage scumbags. Because once they get that far, there's not a great deal you can do other than wait for them kill or rape or murder and demand the death penalty, which is pointless because there's no more fear.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

It's a well-known fact that murder is up considerably from say 50 years ago.

I actually know very little about this but for arguments sake I'm gonna ask if this has something to do with population?? Irish population got a lot bigger, as did urban centres.

And looking over to England there was conscription at the start of and the middle of the 20th century but not at the end

Is it just a matter of more people more crime?

There's also detection rates to consider. You need to do a principled component analysis that takes into account all significant factors.

    Statisticians can do this.

I was referring to general crime. The tables actually show that crime levels (for all crimes) are on a par with those of the mid seventies, maybe a fraction higher. Which is not bad, considering the population is much higher than that it was now.

Murder level does seem to have gone up though, fair point. But the main reason for this is the gangland crimes and, as I stated, that's mainly because more and more fear isn't working.

If anything, only the innocent people are getting more and more scared.

Thanks for posting that link. Interesting reading.

It is also well known that humans are less likely to die a violent death today compared to almost any other time in human history.

I'm no psychoanalysitician but maybe it's because we have no common enemy. In days of yore it was 'the Brits', 'the prods', even the Nazi's for some. But these days we don't have any real beef with anyone, so we just kill each other.

We need a good war to sort out this society of ours.
