What do you think of 'society' today?

You hear a lot a the breakdown of society and morals but do you really think things are any worse today than they were 50, 100, or 500 years ago?

Personally, in regards to 50 years ago at least, there are definitely appears to be less consideration given for the fellow man/woman on the street. But then then there also is more of a light shone on issues like financial scandals, paedophilia etc. today than what had went on in the past. Possibly, this could be a reason why society today looks bad in it's own time.

It's all to do with the dregs of society, if that part of society didn't exist then we'd be sorted, but probably socialist

Society has its problems of course, but reports of it "going to hell" are greatly exaggerated.

I'd recommend starting your research in the political buildings in Dublin.
They have been shafting in that general direction for years and have decades of first-hand knowledge on "Analisation of Modern Society".
Its now "us" and "them" more so.

( is "Analisation" even a word? From an editorial point of view, that's the first thing they will pick on.)

    There are two issues here.

Firstly, there are so much more emotive news stories in the media than there were before. BUT this does NOT mean that there is so much more crime going on. It just means more of it is getting reported and it's getting reported in such a way that it makes poeple think that society is a lot more scumbaggery now than it was in the past.

Secondly, However, there is a lot mroe care in society these days: if little Jimmy can't learn his Irish or wets the bed, he's far more likely to get a little reassurance and compassion now that he would thirty or fourty years ago.

The problem is that the use of fear as a control or deterant is no longer working and there's no plan B, other than use more fear. It worked in the past because there was no accountability and a high level of ignorance. People didn't ask questions when they should have. Fear can only work when there is ignorance. Now, in a world of multi-media, internet and so forth, everyone can access pretty much any information they want. We KNOW more about the authoritative fgures than ever before, and we know that they are NOT automatically right. We are no longer ignorant. We know that the priest is not automaically right. Pandora's box has been opened, and there is no going back.

This is why I'm of the opinon that you need to sort out these kids and find out what they want BEFORE they become teenage scumbags. Because once they get that far, there's not a great deal you can do other than wait for them kill or rape or murder and demand the death penalty, which is pointless because there's no more fear.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

It's a well-known fact that murder is up considerably from say 50 years ago.

I actually know very little about this but for arguments sake I'm gonna ask if this has something to do with population?? Irish population got a lot bigger, as did urban centres.

And looking over to England there was conscription at the start of and the middle of the 20th century but not at the end

Is it just a matter of more people more crime?

There's also detection rates to consider. You need to do a principled component analysis that takes into account all significant factors.

    Statisticians can do this.

I was referring to general crime. The tables actually show that crime levels (for all crimes) are on a par with those of the mid seventies, maybe a fraction higher. Which is not bad, considering the population is much higher than that it was now.

Murder level does seem to have gone up though, fair point. But the main reason for this is the gangland crimes and, as I stated, that's mainly because more and more fear isn't working.

If anything, only the innocent people are getting more and more scared.

Thanks for posting that link. Interesting reading.

It is also well known that humans are less likely to die a violent death today compared to almost any other time in human history.

I'm no psychoanalysitician but maybe it's because we have no common enemy. In days of yore it was 'the Brits', 'the prods', even the Nazi's for some. But these days we don't have any real beef with anyone, so we just kill each other.

We need a good war to sort out this society of ours.

I'd say its pretty irrefutable that the quality of life for the vast majority has improved beyond recognition in the last 50 years.

I would agree that as individuals we are more selfish, but as a whole society people are taken care of better.

You say that but do you think people are any healthier (think about how much people sit in front of a TV or computer these days) or happier than they were 50 years ago? That's the thing about the possessions we have today, we think their great at first and then inevitably, we become used to them and then they're not such a fantastic thing anymore.

If you look at the elderly, I'd say their care is at an all-time low. There would have been a time that their children would have taken them into their home and looked after them, these days they can't wait to cart them off into a home to wither and die.

I'm not contradicting you as such, I'm making the point that for all our advances, as a society, are we really any further on?

I'd say we are, but not in every way.

Acess to healthcare, vaccines, better housing conditions and a greater general awareness of health issue coupled with medical advances has given us all healthier lives, longer life expectancies.

The prejudices against anyone with what was considered a non-conformist lifestyle - gay people, single mothers, people who wanted to remain childless were huge to the extent of crimminalisation or confinement in a Magdelene house.

The stigma that was attached to things like victims of sexual assault and rape, divorce or separation, even TB was unbelieveable by todays thinking. Children were considered the property of their parents, and effectively had very few rights.

Even a child born out of wedlock had the word ''BASTARD'' stamped in capital letters on its birth cert, even its passport.

The church had a stranglehold on popular morality, and dictated to the masses their attitudes to others and spread suspicion of those outside the faith. The clergy were NEVER questioned.

I'll take my chances with modern society.:)

Society is getting better and better with each generation.

Sure I saw a homeless guy this morning in a sleeping bag on George's St laying prostrate across 2/3rds of the footpath, but I have to remind myself that 200 years ago he'd probably have been found dead in a gutter. Lucky fella.

You can blame religion or politics till your blue in the face, you can blame the vermin that prowls are streets (mainly youth scum chavs) but its all down to ourselves ultimately and the horrendous things we are capable of:

To sum up, see this thread here

Edit: There are some good, brilliant things in that thread that we can do also!!! We are capable of great things too :D

    No.

It's a constant complaint that "the youth of today is out of control and society is worse than it was when i were a lad" and it's total ****.

If this were true in the slightest it would mean that since the dawn of time each successive generation has been degrading at a steady rate, so civilization probably shouldn't have made it past the roman empire and by now we should be roaming bands of satanic killers embroiled in a constant orgy of destruction.

    *looks around*

Struggle bring unity.Poverty brings sadness and unity between the levels.Prosperity brings rivalry greed and aggressiveness and lack of compassion.
The foundation of money to be made have stopped people from caring about anything but getting more money.

Ireland before and 80's mid 90's was a country to be happy in.Neighbours were neighbours. If they see a fallen person on street they wouldn't step over them. Now they would.
I saw a man lying on the street blood coming from his head and people walked right past him not even stopping to ring ambulance or police.
I stopped waited for police to get there turned out he had a fit and fell banging his head.Poor man.
Personally i am lucky i havent allowed the change in country change my personality.
