Well he the leader of a religion that 90%+ of this county follow. Have some respect.

90% of people in this country are not practising Catholics.

Respect? Don't give me that horse sh*t. His whole organisation covered up the systematic abuse of children for decades. They can kiss the back of me flaps so they can and f*ck right off while they're doing it.

Is that not a slight overstatement

The competition for that rather dubious accolade is pretty fierce you know

He tells Africans not to use condoms, ignores the horrors inflicted on children by members of his church and orchestrated the downfall of the Republic and the destruction of the Jedi Council. How is that not evil?

No, not really. It's a joke that Paul Merton made on Have I got News for You.

Though, as far as Popes go, he's not a very nice one

The op's post is incorrect and not worthy of comment on those grounds. THe pope was due to travel to the UK. The pope also apologised for the actions of the church in a letter read out in the church.

    Werent you there?

    Prob not!

In fairness, the current batch of popes are great compared to some of the looneys there before. One pope dug up his predecessor's body and put him on trial, then "executed" him. The pope after that, dug up the body again and had another trial (same outcome). And they were some of the more sane popes from back then!

It's a shame that Pope John Paul I died so young. He seemed very progressive, especially for his time.( Conspiracy thread anyone?)

John Paul was not your ordinary pope. He referred to himself as "I" instead of the traditional royal "We." His beaming demeanor earned him the nickname "The Smiling Pope" and gave him cachet with the little people. John Paul immediately began planning out reforms he perceived that the church needed, including revisions to the long-standing absolute ban on contraceptives and fertility treatments. He was apparently also planning to shake up the Vatican power structure.

wouldn't be too surprised to find out he commited suicide by stabbing himself in the back six times before throwing himself off the vatican.

I was posting in response to another user saying that the Pope deserved respect.

I fully agree with your sentiment btw, just please don't confuse my point of view again.:)

Thumbs up for the sensationalist thread title. While I agree the pope should apologise on behalf of the church for the abuse, I disagree he should go against the teachings of the church he represents by voicing his support for gay rights... even though I disagree with the church's stance.

Possibly although the fact that he never had much opportunity to implement it might lead one to speculate that the progressiveness of his agenda might have been subsequently exxagurated.

We have little way of telling really.

Ummm I thought his role involved rather more than representing his church

The official explanation IIRC was that he hadnt been taking his heart medication because in his excitement at his surprise appointment he forgot to bring it with him when he set off for Rome.

Rome being such a small little place there arent a lot of pharmacies dontcha know

I see where you're coming from but can't a Pope reinterpret and change dogma? Interestingly enough Jesus himself never commented on homosexuality.

I thought it was hilarious how he's campaigning against the fact that an organisation with a disproportionately large number of homosexual employees may be forced to employ homosexuals... bit behind the times.

    Paeodophilia = kiddy fiddler

Homosexuality = being attracted to people of the same gender

His organisation is so backward and outdated. It pedals promises to the poor it can never cash! Why are most predomintly Catholic countries poor?

Some have even speculated that Yeshua Himself was gay.Though, these have been largely met with death threats. Oh peaceful loving Christian that turn the other cheek, how pacifist your ways truly are.

If you add the many Gospels that were not admitted into the final Version of the Bible, which alluded a romantic attraction to Mary Magedelan he may have been bi sexual.

Or: Why are many poor countries Catholic?

They're not poor because of the Church; they're poor because of colonialism, dictatorships, civil war etc. What can you look to when you have nothing? That's why many people turn to religion. Rightly or wrongly, it gives them hope.

So? That's speculation. I can speculate Tom Jones is really a lesbian woman - that doesn't mean it's true.

I suppose that would have been the least contradictory to the Godhead. Afterall the father is neither male nor female.

Do they believe God has no gender? The God of the Old testament seems to have all the worse traits and stereotypes of the male gender. A mans world and a mans God.

No I was not in the vatican when the pope fell out of bed, walked the 5 min to the nearest church and read out a speach prepared by someone else, that focused more on 'moving foward' and 'learning from the past' more than addressing the serious issues currently facing the church in Ireland and globally.
