    This just happened

I was sitting in my flat on the computer, heard some noise upstairs. a man and a woman shouting, door being banged, some loud thud sounds like something heavy being dropped, theres also been the sound of a newborn baby crying for the past couple of days but I wasnt sure if that was from the same place.

I didnt call them straight away as couples tend to have fights every so often but after a while of hearing the commotion above me on a Sunday night I wasnt taking any chances

they guards came quickly and went up, talked to them, she's staying there with the guy now and didnt want to leave.

was I wrong calling the gardai over a domestic? hearing loud noises with the shouting had me worried. I had a neighbour almost killed right across from me in a flat before.

at what point to you decide a situation is dangerous enough to get the police involved?

As someone who has been a victim of domestic violence, I say better to call over something little than not call and someone get seriously hurt.

Chances are the woman just chucked a few things at the guy.

You probably shouldn't have called - every tiff can't involve the Gardaí.

    thats what I was thinking

I dont want to have someone seriously injured or even dead knowing I could have maybe stopped it from happening

It's hard to know really. Could be seen as just butting in on other peoples business or genuinely trying to help someone.

Call them anonymously if you do, you don't want it to come back and bite you.

and thats what I'm asking, which tiffs should involve the gardai?

also there are neighbours with jobs/college, Im sure they dont want to be listening to people shouting at 00.30hrs

I usually wait until the shouting stops and the only noises are muffled bangs and the rustling of black bags.

Then let them make the call and for the reason of disturbing the peace.

Gardai say you made the call from apartment downstairs, bloke comes round to your place for a "little chat".

Then you might want to call the gardai for a reason.

    in what way?

Hope your neighbour isn't a Boardsie (or friend of) , for example.

"A woman in her 30s, who was found dead at an apartment in Sandyford this morning, was the third fatal stabbing victim this year."

the alarm was raised too late for that woman

I was referring to the notion that my neighbour could physically harm me

You've got a bit of a thing with regards to your neighbour and physical violence.

No, I don't think he was right in the first instance ringing the police and linking news article on a murder isn't helping. Seriously jumping the gun I think. Really is an over-reaction.

So you suggest not calling the Gaurds during a possible case of domestic violence because you are afraid of the bully husband coming down and hitting you?

Can't you see that you are letting thugs win with that attitude?

OP you were correct to call. People bury there heads far too often in this country. Well done.

Yes OP you were correct to call.

Maybe if nothing else you've taught them not to raise their voices excessively so that their neighbours can hear it - so from that point of view I'm sure it won't do any harm for their kid. Parents really shouldnt scream around young kids. It's very scary in my experience.

Sounds like you made the right call, I'd hope I'd do the same, not just adjust the tv and ignore that type of thing.

If he thought a crime was being committed then he did the right thing calling the guards. Thats what they are there for. Too often there are regrets where people didn't tell the authorities for whatever reason.

In this situation he may have been wrong, but there is no negative consequence as opposed to him doing nothing when he thought there may have been a case of domestic violence.

Ok right I'm obviously missing something here in this sentence. That is as vague as something very vague indeed in my book. Noises, shouting, door slamming?!! Come on. Y'know what you got there? A row.

By the way new born babies do have tendency to cry a lot.

I gave a brief description. I heard a sound like someone being thrown around a room, I heard someone battering at a door, a womans voice in distress.

Yes babies cry but if theres a baby also in that room it could be in trouble. babies have been murdered in Ireland before
