I rang sky yesterday and they told me they're not doing standard boxes anymore but these HD boxes for new customers. What am I gonna do now as the apartment block we are moving into is only wired for standard sky as they don't have the second wire!!

I had problems with a Sky+ box with 1 cable instead of 2 - not sure if this applies to the new HD boxes.

Basically the sky engineer couldn't install the 2nd cable on the day so I was left with a Sky+ box with 1 cable. He told me some of the Sky+ functionality would still work. I tried it for a while but every now & again I would get a "no signal" message. So I had to reboot the box which toke 5 minutes each time.

I then spoke to one of the Sky technical people over the phone. He told me I would continue to get the "no siganl" message as long as there was only 1 cable.

So after that I used the box solely as a standard sky box i.e. didn't use any of sky+ functionality like pause etc. It worked better and for longer periods I had no problems. But now & again I would still get the "no signal" message e.g. switched off the box at nite, switch it on in the morning: "no signal" message again.

Eventually I got the engineer back in to put the 2nd cable in. No probs after that.

there is a menu somewhere, where you can tell the box it only has 1 connection.

sorry for the mathsy question
the 'totals' and 'equals' parts are correct, the numbers in the brackets i'm not so sure about.

I am an existing sky + customer, if I get a new hd box without the monthly sub will I get the new epg?
    (The new epg seems cool)

I thought I had it all worked out but I give up. :D

Can someone tell me as a new customer what the upfront hardware and install costs and ongoing sub costs will be for 4 HD STB's but only 2 with HD sub attached. All channels.

Don't worry, I am not paying the whole lot. Upfront costs and sub costs will be split 4 ways. :D

    No problem :)

It's the contract to Sky that's locked in. I'm not so sure about dropping the Sky+ HD sub during the first year with this new offer, but I will find out for you.

Yes, you can have 4 x HD off the octo but whole homes offers apply to new customers only.

The €60 and €30 install fee applies once to an order, regardless of how many boxes.
If you take the HD mix you have to take it for 1 year.

i think sky wants to keep us confused ...lol .

i could be way off so get it confirmed here first, but i think it is this

    4 hd boxes...........(€0 x 1) + (€49 x 3) + (€30) = €177
    wholehome multiroom.....................(€15) x 12 = €180
    1 hd sub......................................(€15) x 12 = €180
    .........................................................total = €537

    plus a 2nd hd sub @ (€15) x 12 = €180

    so
    €177 upfront
    €45 a month
plus a figure from here that matches your chosen package

    (6 packs) + (sports & movies pack) = €73

    €45 + €73 = €118 a month

im not sure about the €177 upfront figure either, sometimes sky only discount the first item of an offer.

    :confused::D

I've got another question. Is the wholehome multiroom price going to go up after the first 12 months? If so to what?

Also, its €15 for the 3 multiroom subs? I thought it was €15 for each after the 12 months but 7.50 each box for new customer for first 12months So why isn't the wholehome sub 3 x 7.50 = 22.50 How is it €15. I've actually tried searchng for information on 'Wholehome' but all I could find is info confirming what I just said. How is my total multiroom sub 15 and not 22?

Cause if wholehome is a flat rate once you go over a certain number of boxes, then can I pay for a few more SD boxes and kit out every room for the same €45pm multiroom cost. And do they make LNB's with more outputs than 8. If not then I'll sacrefice HD in living room where SD looks grand on the 50" at our viewing distance. Keep the HD box for the 125inch screen in the Home-Cinema though :D

did you try searching post #59 :p

wizards info is better than the sky soduko website .

so yeah, after 12 months wholehome goes up to €15 per extra room, some people cancel some/all of there multiroom subs at that point and the box turns into a freeview box with crippled functionality.

im not sure about the second bit, i have a feeling a 3rd or 4th box might end up being €200 each upfront, ....but then again there is a terabit skyhd box coming out so maybe the €49 per box is unlimited.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,039 ✭✭✭BArra

you would get BBC HD and ITV HD (when its broadcasting)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47 BuddyList

I am a Sky+ subscriber (no multiroom) I rang SKY today to upgrade to the HD box without the HD subscription and I was told this is what it would cost

    €199 for the HD-Box and €60 for Installation = €259!!!!

Why is that when I see some people saying its €49 for the HD-Box?

Is this a case of depends on what Sky rep answers the phone? Maybe I will ring back and see if I can save €100 :D

    http://www.sky.com/portal/site/ireland/products/equipment/hd

They seem to be charging twice for this "One-off box cost - New Customers"

Anybody know what reason they are giving?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37 jaya

    new customers -
on this page if you choose a package and click continue, it brings you to the 'choose your equipment page'.
2nd boxes (which require a 12 month multiroom sub) are priced here as
    - sd box = free
    - hd box with hd sub = 129
    - hd box without hd sub = 199

maybe the web site isnt updated yet, or the offer hasnt started yet, or 2nd 3rd 4th boxes really do cost more than the 1st.

...it makes no sense as is as you could get a free sd 2nd box and swap it out a month later for less than 199.

conflicting quotes when you ring too, ...usual sky pricing, i think they get this guy to figure out the pricing structure :D

Yes, but only after 12 months and REMEMBER to phone in 30days before you want to cancel so it is cancelled at the end of those 12 months.

You can drop the HD sub once you have had it for 1 year.

I'm a Sky customer and am gonna subscribe to Sky HD+ and take Sky up on their offer of the Free HD+ box for existing customers (standard installation €60). I have, however a few questions that perhaps people could answer,

    • My dish, lnb and wiring is about 5/6 years old should I get it replaced under the terms of the installation, its working perfectly and showing little sign of rust, wear and tear etc.
    • Could the installer be a little awkward over this, insisting that my set-up is fine so less work for him if I do want a new dish, cables etc.
    • Would it be best to ring Sky to organise installation or contact my local guy?
    • Are the Amstrad DRX890 Sky+HD PVR5 Digiboxes (500GB) available in Ireland yet?
    • Can I specifically ask for this box?
    Cheers for any info guys.

    Echoing the last questions....

Any PVR5's or even PVR'6s out in the wild in Ireland yet?

Will the installer replace old dish and wiring if e.g. 10 years old?

Not if they can avoid doing so.

im resigned to the fact that sky wont subsidize 3rd or 4th boxes, but have they changed the terms and conditions of the 'existing customers swap out without hd sub offer'

    from the site today ->
Sky+HD box €49 for new Sky TV customers if not taken with the HD Pack.
i thought they had seen the light, ...subsidize the hardware heavily and upsell on the subs, like the playstation model, sony made a loss on ps3's and licensed fees out to game makers for profit. looks like were still on the wii model profit both ways, you'd think if you've given them €400/€500 a year for over a decade, and want to give them more for multiroom etc they'd sub the hell out of your extra boxes knowing you are slow to change your setup and they'll likely keep you for another decade , ...well us slow folk are slow to change back when we leave, they'll loose us for a decade.

    rant over ...lol

Hi Jaya, sorry for the delay in getting back to you. There are in the region of 200 new offer codes and it is all extremely confusing. Also they keep changing the offers. These the most popular offers Agents and Kiosks here in Ireland have at the moment -

Additional HD boxes to above offers with HD Sub -€199
Additional HD boxes to above offers without HD Sub -€199

    Sky+ no longer exists.
Standards no longer available alone to new customer, only as part of a Multiroom offer.
Offer of first month free to new customers no longer exists.
HD sub is €15 per month

    Multiroom offer
One additional Multiroom half price for new customers at €7.50 per month for the first twelve months. After twelve months it goes up to €15 per month.
Whole Homes offer for up to seven additional rooms for the first twelve months a total of €15. After twelve months it goes up to €15 per room.

I've made it as simple as I can. I hope it's not too confusing.

Thank you, Wizard 007, for taking the time to detail all that. Have been wanting to upgrade to SKY + for the recording facility, but now understand that we can bypass that for a bit of HD as well, great!

Is there only the one make of box to look out for (we have a standard Pace at the moment)?

Love to know this too, currently have a Pace (Sky+) and a much older Panasonic (regular) and the panny is way faster on channel change.

The current Pace ones don't seem too bad. I've not yet used the Amstrad or Samsung ones to comment on those though.
