Not possible to make something that small and low power that will do Full HD. Remember almost no netbooks can do full HD either.

Damn. They've taken down that video...

    No GPS?

What exactly does it do that a netbook less than half the price can't?

It has assisted GPS with the 3G models and as I said before €360 start price.

You know it won't be €360 by the time it gets to Ireland. It'll probably be the usual replace-the-dollar-sign-with-a-euro-sign bolloxology.

A $500 starting price will become €500 at least, if not more.

    edit: ^^^ what he said.

I don't know about Apple anymore. They used to be on the bleeding edge of technology.I feel they're out of touch with this period.

Apple now target the mass market with easy to use simple devices. This is a pretty basic device but they will market it very well and sell a pile of them. Apple have long ago left the cutting edge of technology to make alot of money through alot of hype and alot of good PR.

Think I'll be getting one, but torn between the 3G or the Wi-Fi one. The 3G version is sold unlocked so it's not as if I'd be on a contract.

Personally I think the 3G is not neccessary and it costs an extra €130 just to have 3G...not to mention the additional data costs!! I imagine the iPad will be mainly used by people at home as something to pick up/put down on the coffee table etc. Can't see that you'd pull it out in a 3G location walking around town or anything. Certainly can't see it replacing a smartphone for mobile internet etc.

The 3g has a plastic bar along the top too.takes away from the look.

No HDMI. No Flash support. No USB (come on, it's 2010 for christ sake). Not widescreen. No in-built cameras. Sounds like a half-arsed, over-hyped piece of meh, really. No sale.

    It's just a big iPhone....no?

I agree with you that its not for a lot of people.

But I think it is a smart device....Apple can now charge people 500 odd quid for the privilege of shopping at their three stores (itunes, apps, ibooks).
Thats all this device is....a fancy electronic sales medium. You can't run multiple apps, plug in 3rd part devices etc. etc.....all you can do is check the internet (wow!) and buy buy buy media from Apple. Genius.

Was borderline on getting an iPhone, but decided to hold out until yesterday to see what their new "thing" was. Why would I want a cross between a digital photoframe and an iPod Touch?

What interests me is the CPU. Seems very odd that they'd design their own CPU? Wonder if Intel are really behind it or what.

I think I'll wait for version 2 with E-Ink, camera, GPS.

SIM card tray (Wi-Fi + 3G model only)

Does this mean if I want to buy an ipad that's 3G capable i'll have to subscribe to a vodafone or o2 price plan. Can I not just buy an ipad and stick what ever sim I want in it.
It's a load of #$@#"*ix if this is the way apple are going to roll out the ipad here.

From what I heard last night the 3g version will come unlocked and AT & T in america will sell it without a contract on a month to month basis for data usage then

It's going to be fully unlocked from launch, though it only seems to support microSIMs, which smaller operators like Meteor may not carry until there are phones which accept them.
Since you'll require a separate data-only plan for this SIM, you might find the appeal of the 3G limited, especially if you don't intend on using this for reading on the bus and so forth.
I think I'll wait for version 2 with E-Ink, camera, GPS.
The first version already comes with assisted GPS (3G version obviously), I don't know if that means that the non-3G version has standard GPS. It also has a compass in it. So for all intents and purposes it's a big iPhone 3GS without the phone or camera.

It's a great concept, just not fully there yet. They're missing some key features.
A forward-facing camera and a built-in mic for video Skyping people - come on Apple, that should have been easy. Even 2MP would do for now.
USB - what use is a large-screen device that can't interact with other devices? Though you may be able to interact via Bluetooth which would go some way to fixing this.

Though Apple do have a history of omitting ridiculously popular and necessary features simply because Apple doesn't think that these features are the future. The iPhone's SMS was crap until OS 3 and MMS was non-existent. Copy & Paste, two of the most used functions on any computing device, and Apple decide it's not required.

This is why I think we can see the 2nd generation of this device plugging 99% of the holes that this first generation has.

The iPad takes "micro-SIMs" only. As far as I know, no network as of yet deals in micro SIMs in Ireland.
