Not possible to make something that small and low power that will do Full HD. Remember almost no netbooks can do full HD either.

    For €360???

Those are dollar prices but interesting how this will translate to yoyos

    $500 = €360

    No GPS?

What exactly does it do that a netbook less than half the price can't?

It has assisted GPS with the 3G models and as I said before €360 start price.

You know it won't be €360 by the time it gets to Ireland. It'll probably be the usual replace-the-dollar-sign-with-a-euro-sign bolloxology.

A $500 starting price will become €500 at least, if not more.

    edit: ^^^ what he said.

I don't know about Apple anymore. They used to be on the bleeding edge of technology.I feel they're out of touch with this period.

Apple now target the mass market with easy to use simple devices. This is a pretty basic device but they will market it very well and sell a pile of them. Apple have long ago left the cutting edge of technology to make alot of money through alot of hype and alot of good PR.

Think I'll be getting one, but torn between the 3G or the Wi-Fi one. The 3G version is sold unlocked so it's not as if I'd be on a contract.

Personally I think the 3G is not neccessary and it costs an extra €130 just to have 3G...not to mention the additional data costs!! I imagine the iPad will be mainly used by people at home as something to pick up/put down on the coffee table etc. Can't see that you'd pull it out in a 3G location walking around town or anything. Certainly can't see it replacing a smartphone for mobile internet etc.

The 3g has a plastic bar along the top too.takes away from the look.

No HDMI. No Flash support. No USB (come on, it's 2010 for christ sake). Not widescreen. No in-built cameras. Sounds like a half-arsed, over-hyped piece of meh, really. No sale.

I agree with you that its not for a lot of people.

But I think it is a smart device....Apple can now charge people 500 odd quid for the privilege of shopping at their three stores (itunes, apps, ibooks).
Thats all this device is....a fancy electronic sales medium. You can't run multiple apps, plug in 3rd part devices etc. etc.....all you can do is check the internet (wow!) and buy buy buy media from Apple. Genius.

Was borderline on getting an iPhone, but decided to hold out until yesterday to see what their new "thing" was. Why would I want a cross between a digital photoframe and an iPod Touch?

What interests me is the CPU. Seems very odd that they'd design their own CPU? Wonder if Intel are really behind it or what.

I think I'll wait for version 2 with E-Ink, camera, GPS.

SIM card tray (Wi-Fi + 3G model only)

Does this mean if I want to buy an ipad that's 3G capable i'll have to subscribe to a vodafone or o2 price plan. Can I not just buy an ipad and stick what ever sim I want in it.
It's a load of #$@#"*ix if this is the way apple are going to roll out the ipad here.

From what I heard last night the 3g version will come unlocked and AT & T in america will sell it without a contract on a month to month basis for data usage then

It's going to be fully unlocked from launch, though it only seems to support microSIMs, which smaller operators like Meteor may not carry until there are phones which accept them.
Since you'll require a separate data-only plan for this SIM, you might find the appeal of the 3G limited, especially if you don't intend on using this for reading on the bus and so forth.
I think I'll wait for version 2 with E-Ink, camera, GPS.
The first version already comes with assisted GPS (3G version obviously), I don't know if that means that the non-3G version has standard GPS. It also has a compass in it. So for all intents and purposes it's a big iPhone 3GS without the phone or camera.

It's a great concept, just not fully there yet. They're missing some key features.
A forward-facing camera and a built-in mic for video Skyping people - come on Apple, that should have been easy. Even 2MP would do for now.
USB - what use is a large-screen device that can't interact with other devices? Though you may be able to interact via Bluetooth which would go some way to fixing this.

Though Apple do have a history of omitting ridiculously popular and necessary features simply because Apple doesn't think that these features are the future. The iPhone's SMS was crap until OS 3 and MMS was non-existent. Copy & Paste, two of the most used functions on any computing device, and Apple decide it's not required.

This is why I think we can see the 2nd generation of this device plugging 99% of the holes that this first generation has.

The iPad takes "micro-SIMs" only. As far as I know, no network as of yet deals in micro SIMs in Ireland.

The Apple A4 platform is a custom design based on the ARM's cortex A9 processor (i.e. the Apple equivalent of NVidia's Tegra2). ARM licence their CPU designs rather than manufacturer themselves

I know Apple like to be different but that seems like a stupid move. It's mega sims we want not micro sims. I don't see any sense in this move at all.
It's turned me off the device completley, just thought I could pop my 3 sim in and off I go, I can't see the irish networks moving to this sim just for apple's sake...boo apple!!!

This could yet be renamed the iflop

I dunno, I've to reserve judgement on that one because this is the first I've heard of micro SIMs.

We're pretty much at the limit of phone size - they won't get much smaller and people won't accept phones much bigger. This means the manufacturers are already starting to cram in as many features as possible without changing the size of the phone, which involves shaving micrometres off components to save on space and weight. I'd be very surprised if micro SIMs aren't common by 2011 and de facto for new phones by 2012.

I would imagine the idea behind using the micro Sim is to tie the user to a preferred network for data. Let's say Apple choose O2 as their partner in Ireland......O2 will sell micro Sim data plans to use in the iPad. This will stop you using your existing phone Sim from 3, Meteor, Voda etc. in the iPad and you would have to go with Apple's choice of network.

I'm sure if it's the emerging standard then phones will in general start using it. Look at firewire and USB - Apple essentially kick started both of them.

i here what your all saying about it being an oversized touch (not even an oversized iphone) but its actually quite well done for what it is.

I do plan on getting the 32GB one, its perfect for showing photos on (i'm a photographer) to people on the go, it'll fit very easily in a camera bag (even the small one) with very little weight. ALso at home if people come around, I can just hand them it, no laptop or anything.

It definitely could be better, but the call for a camera is ridiculous, are you really gonna whip it out to snap something? and the epic fail of video phones proved people don't really want to be on camera, its mainly aimed at the consumer, not the pro, so no need for video conferencing. Not sure how games will be though, seems a bit big for a lot of moving and swiping...

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 7,486 ✭✭✭Red Alert

Think I'll grab the 64GB one if I can, but not too drawn on the 3G. I might get a 3G one if it'll run without the 3G SIM in it in case I change my mind later on - wonder if it'll refuse to run without any SIM in it?

If this was possible it would be pretty cool. If you could any sim in then I'd be very drawn to the 3G one, as I already have data with meteor, but definitely don't want another bill/cost. However, the 32 would suit me way better than the 16, but a 32 3G is outside the budget :(

Consumers use cameras for web chat/MSN etc. It's not a technology only used by professionals.

As a showcase for photos, it looks very slick though. :)

ye i know, but from what Apple and Jobs have said about it and the way they sold it on wednesday, they're not aiming it as a consumers video chat device, they're aiming it as a web, email, games etc device...

    photos will be slick ;)

Again. They'd hardly aim it as a consumer video chat device, if it didn't have a camera.

I'm willing to bet you any amount of money that version 2 will have a camera.
It seems to be kinda normal these days for apple to release a product missing a few vital features that when they bring in will really define and cement the product.
