What is peoples take on this?
I believe its long overdue,as each week comes and goes there are just more and more gun&gang related crimes. The crime level here in Ireland is easily on a par with the rest of the eu where police are trusted to hold guns.
I think they may gain some respect

There's many Gardaí that have guns already.

Obviously they'd be made into two-gun Gardai.

Absolutely not. When was the last time an unarmed garda needed a gun? If we arm our police force then the unarmed criminals will start to arm themselves to counter this.

Damm right. Its time we armed all Gardai with massive weapons they can store in their pants. Rather then the small things they tend to smuggle around with them. Yeah, those men in uniforms need big tools they can slap in peoples faces, things they can get out easy. Then they can go around in public with their huge bulges partially covered and people could sit there and go, "look at the size of that cock".

Why would the regular gardaí need guns to patrol the streets of dublin?

I would, its not they are going to start robbing the post office.
There are enough guns in the wrong hands as it is

I've always wondered how efficient a powerful tranquillizer gun. Surely there would be one that'd be fast acting enough as to be viable. Surely it beats the current approach while not being a lethal takedown?

Edit: I know if I don't mention it, someone else will. I'm aware using real guns doesn't instantly mean a lethal takedown.

I never quite understood the concept of a (largely) unarmed police force.

It's a bit like citizen's arrest with a cap on

Might be better if they knew how to handle fire arms properly before arming them in the streets.

well if they could slap the scum around the place without people crying police brutality and all that who knows what the country would be like now

Depends on your definition of " armed "

To me if you have a knife your armed, if your carrying a bat and have criminal intentions, you are armed.

You dont need a gun to be armed. Regardless, Id nearly hazard a guess that a very, very high percentage of criminals have access to something like a gun or bat or knive should they require them and the only reason to carry any of the above is to commit a crime.

Its a very tough thing to measure, Im all for the gardai going around with there ASP batons or pepper spray but in the same sense arming them would give them a better command of a situation. I suppose thats why we have the ERU in place at the moment.

Pepper spray and tasers, yes. Guns, no.

I think this idea is utter boll0cks. Criminal gangs have already upped the stakes with their level of armanent. Criminal gangs rival each other, a situation which has lead to a mini arms race, but yet people say "ooooh, if we arm the Gards the crims will all get guns". Pffft. They already have them. In large quantities. Semi and fully automatic assault rifles. There are estates in some of our major cities the Gardai can't enter because they'll be shot at.

Really. That bird has flown. Crims are armed. And the idea of an unarmed police force trying to handle them is laughable.

its it not special branch. eru etc that handle the gangs and not your common guard...

ANy way the government cant give proper funding to the coast guard or S&R do you really think they will hand out money for the weapons and training for the enitre force?.. i think not

Bollox. Criminals carry weapons to attack or defend themselves from other criminals, not the police. They aren't "at war" with the police

As of 2004 (I know it's a while ago) the ERU had 50 members. Hardly enough to patrol flash point areas in Dublin and Limerick. Especially if any emergency occurs while they're patrolling.

No way should they be given guns!! In my opinion the system in Ireland is way behind compared to the rest of the EU & I really don't think the Gardai can be trusted enough as they are to handy with their fist when there is no need for it!! I have seen this first hand & have lost respect for the Garda in this country due to the way I have seen them handle situations over the years! And they get away with it, so no way do I want them on the street with GUNS:eek:..

Your right we should arm the garda, with tribunals slowing down how will our hard working millionaire barristars make their money without some kind of government enquiry every month.

    We need more abbeylara's

Can we not bring back the other half of the deal, cope do not carry arms , but you kill a cop you hang.

    Always saw that as fair

while you do get langers in every walk of life 99% of the time if a guard wasw to hit someone then they prob deserved it.

Detectives and ERU can handle the Dublin and Limerick drugs and feuds.
For the garda on the beat there's no need when they break up fights or carry drunks to the cells.
