which SatNav app for Ireland?

I wouldn't get a lot of use from one, but if I have to go somewhere im not sure of, I'd rather have something a bit better that googlemaps.

So, I wouldn't spend the money that the likes of Tom Tom and Navigon are asking....so instead I'm wondering if anyone has used Co Pilot Live, for UK and Ireland?

Its half the price, but why? Is it crap?

I have used all 3 of them and actually find Co-pilot great and use it most of time.
it's good.

great, is it obvious when using all three that the co pilot one is a much cheaper one? Do the tom tom/navigon apps have anything that justifies them being twice the price?

What area of the country have you been using co-pilot in?

No i think tom tom is bit buggy and maps are not updated, just read the review in the app itself.
I have used Co-pilot in bray, M50, tallaght, blanchardstown, clondalkin and in city center and not once i got trouble, Maps seem to be updated but Red cow roundabout Co-pilot got confused once. that's all.

The reviews on iTunes of Co Pilot are mostly good but a bunch of people seem to think the maps are crap unless you're in the UK.

Anyone know how often they are updated??

i tried the copilot maps recently. i will say this: i nearly wanted to throw the iphone out of the window. it was buggy, inaccurate and misleading. it made me do 2 circles and im not sure what it was at.

tomtom - for me its still the best ive used and i will stick with it.

it was a drive from dublin to dundalk - and in the middle i needed petrol. and it would not recognise anything in dundalk. very poor afai recall.

i nearly ended up on the side of the road with no petrol

on a side note that day a big bird decided to use my car as a landing site, while i was driving. that was scary hearing that big "bong" on top of your head!

You could be right, in my opinion there is no such thing as perfect Navigation device, my cousin bought brand new expensive garmin and trip to Belfast was hell lot of trouble.
so it all depends what part of country maps you will be using, Co-pilot hasn't given me any trouble in the above mentioned places so far.

I'm using Navigon on the 3G. In-app control of iPod playback and auto-override of music. Overall very good, didn't have some roads around Galway County, but the map quality on the whole does seem very good. The only real complaint about this app is that the load time and UI response time can be atrocious.

I have co-pilot. Haven't really used it yet to be honest.

Just wondering does the CoPilot app work with the tomtom cradle? i.e. the GPS enhancement feature of the tomtom cradle?

I just downloaded 'Ndrive UK & Ireland' a steal for only €13.99 at the moment.

Only a few features of the higher priced apps are missing but the maps are up to date and does what i need it to. For a simple cheap Satnav software you can't go wrong!

I found navigon excellent. I even went so far as to buy their official cradle and car charger kit.

I use the Tom Tom cradle with their software. The cradle is pricey but it is well made, vastly improves the GPS signal (IMO), can be used as a hands-free phone kit and you can output your ipod music to your car stereo. The cradle works with most iphone sat-nav software apps.

Down to €5.99 now so figure it's worth a punt. My old Garmin died recently and given that even the most up-to-date maps for that were out of date, I'm assuming the n-drive will function similarly to that or any other sat nav I've used: as a rough guide to be taken with a pinch of salt.

Navigon is okay for use in Ireland but a total waste outside of Ireland, gps not locking in navigon but okay in google maps etc. Navigon is missing a good few of the newer roads and is prone to giving conflicting instructions on screen and by voice! So for the price I would say that it is not worth the money and as it was useless when I tried to use it in both Germany and Italy (couldn't lock GPS, crazy directions (turn left off cliff etc.)

Have used tom-tom and copilot and prefer copilot.

Reason is software is not sluggish as compared to tomtom and copilot uses navteq maps which cover Ireland better.

Hey all. Not to drag up and old thread but noticed Navigon seems to now be €25.99 unless I'm mistaken? The reviews for copilot are not great on the store but seem better online and on this thread. If copilot and navigon are both on offer which is better to get?

I use copilot, but as i tend to know the areas I am driving around, tend to not have to rely on it!
I do like it though, it seems to have all the recently constructed roads I drive on, Like the dual carriageway/motorway between shannon/ennis/galway.
Also one thing i love, if you are driving in 2 seperate cars, with both of you having copilot, you can have them linked, so you can see each other on the map.

I use Tom Tom, and find it excellent.
So much so that it has the new motorway section(s) on the Cork-Dublin road, and I don't think I've updated it since I got it a few months ago.

Plus, it's funny to have someone give you directions in Arabic!

Yeah Navigon for me, got it last week, excellent value at the discounted price - think it was around €60 before for the British Isles version. The interaction with google to find places not in it's own maps/database is real handy.

Like any app but especially with the higher price of this kind of app you can share the app with anyone (up to a maximum of 5 I think) if you can trust them with your iTunes password.

Nobody so far has mentioned Skobbler. It's a little experimental, but also dirt cheap.

Advantage: It uses OpenStreetMap data, so it's the only map out there with all recent major roads up to date.

Disadvantage: It uses OpenStreetMap, so there's plenty of white space on the map too. But you can fix that yourself, and if you're too lazy somebody else will, all just a matter of time.

If you want one with commercial map data, just make sure you get Navteq (like Navigon use) rather than TeleAtlas (owned by Tom Tom). Anybody expressing satisfaction with Tom Tom maps has clearly been driving around different parts of the world than I have
