  • Registered Users Posts: 195 ✭✭gothwalk

2.7C, light breeze, partially clear sky with clouds moving in from the east. Ground is not dry, but hard surfaces are - only precipitation overnight seems to have been a short sharp shower of hail around 04:00.

Good morning all, It was a wild night in Cork, with heavy rain and strong winds. Electricity went off at 2am, restored at 7am.

Can one calculate dew point knowing temperature and humidity?

Yeah the "streamer" thats gone into wicklow north of here this morning seems to be the dregs of the front rather than convection.
That fact that it is hail and up 5mm in size means it is convection though I agree it may be associated with front but more showers are forming and I think this may continue

    Today
******* AMENDMENT ***************Very cold today, with patches of rain, sleet and snow at first, mainly in the southwest and in parts of the east. Brighter and mainly dry weather will extend from the north, but some scattered wintry showers of rain, sleet or snow will follow also, chiefly affecting northwest, north and east coasts. Strong and gusty northeast winds will gradually ease. Maximum temperatures just 1 to 5 Celsius.
    Tonight

Tonight will be bitterly cold, with widespread severe frost and icy patches. Risk of freezing fog also, as winds slacken. Most areas will be dry, with clear spells, but there will be further wintry showers of sleet and snow, mainly along western, northern and eastern coasts. Minimum temperatures 0 to minus 8 or minus 9 Celsius.
    hr.gif

    Tomorrow

Tomorrow, New Year's Day, will remain bitterly cold, but bright and dry in many areas with sunny spells. However, frost, fog and ice may linger on in sheltered areas throughout the day and some further scattered wintry showers of sleet and snow will occur, these mainly along western, northern and eastern coastal areas. Maximum temperatures 0 to 3 Celsius, in a light north to northwest wind.

    Outlook

Bitterly cold weather will continue well into the New year, probably at least up until Saturday 9th January. On Friday night, temperatures will fall to below minus 7 Celsius in many areas and to minus 10 or lower in some parts. Many areas will be dry and clear but, with little or no wind, fog patches will develop, freezing in some areas. Scattered wintry showers of sleet or snow will occur also, these most likely along western, northern and eastern coasts, with a risk of more prolonged falls along the north coast towards morning. On Saturday, parts of Munster and South Leinster will stay dry, with just a few scattered wintry showers, but the northern half of the country will be cloudier, with more widespread showers of sleet and snow and with a risk of accumulations in places. Max. temperatures 0 to 4 Celsius, with light to moderate mainly westerly winds. There will be a hard frost on Saturday night, with freezing fog. Frost and fog should clear in most parts on Sunday, as easterly winds freshen. Many areas will be dry, but there will be a few further wintry showers, mainly along eastern and northern coasts, with the possibility of more persistent rain or sleet along parts of the south coast. From Monday to Saturday 9th, little change, with the bitterly cold spell continuing.
A good forecast for most places except us and our neighbours.

    Yeah I see them.

I had just noticed on the radar that the streamer was following the lp south which meant at the very least it is tied into it's circulation

I think that was written by Jean Byrne. Look at how many times the word "bitterly" is used!

Wind direction is NE at the moment so the fetch for NI is small.Isolated showers of hail and snow couldn't be ruled out.
    Yes temps will drop.
I'm not sure whether it will be in the next few hours.Certainly overnight considerably and struggle to rise at all tomorrow.

temp down from 3.8 to 2.9 in the last hour.

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,778 ✭✭✭✭ninebeanrows

These little showers affecting the east are actually Irish sea showers.

They are just forming under that high level sheet, and should have more energy in them when that sheet clears away south.

Have had none myself so far but there seems to be a decent speckling.

not much good to us down here without any precipitation. listening to gerry there the trough from the north won't penetrate inland..looks like a cold dry week ahead down south. that weather system for monday to the south seems to have come further north again and may catch the south.
