Rumours in workplace

Hey guys, I just found out that someone who I don't even know at work has been spreading a story about me. I have a feeling they heard about the situation 3rd or 4th hand outside of work and as stories go someone along the line added in their own bit to make the gossip more juicy. Did this ever happen to you? What did you do? Any advice on what I should do?

You don't know them, what do you care?

^OP...what was the rumour again?....if it gets outta hand, address it direct, call an informal staff meeting, threathen legal action....slander et al, if they are sending emails and using the workplace to spread written liable, you have a case.

Sure they'll think you're a bitch, better that then being labeled a slag.

Thanks for the reply but I don't really want to sink to their level.
I am tempted to confront them (anyone ever do this? How did they react?) but we're not back at work until the 4th so maybe instead of dragging it all back up again then maybe I should just ignore it?
Why are people so F***ing horrible??!!

I don't know them but I obviously know people that they have told. I care because it's my reputation being blackened for something I did that got totally exagerated!

Thanks to a rumour people in work now think I'm Jewish. I find this very offensive as I'm actually a Satanist.

They'll deny it, neither of you will get anywhere but just more annoyed with each other. Or, you could not say anything, end up getting annoyed enough to the point you feel you have to say it, and you get what I said at the start of the post.

    Or I'm wrong.

Can you be sure, 100% sure of who started the rumour?

Just because someone says, such and such told me, does not make it so.

Just ignore them. Workplace gossip should stay in the workplace. They are probably jealous of you or something. If it gets worse or outa control invest in a gun.:D

    :p
Ya got the jist of it anyway!
It has never been said directly to my face until someone got drunk and mentioned it, so don't think there is any point in going to anyone in work about it!

Oh of course - it's far better to be labelled a nasty person rather than a woman who likes casual sex.

The casual sex part doesn't bother me so much, it's the part they added on to story:rolleyes:
Surely I wouldn't be seen as nasty for confronting a person who is spreading a story concerning me that they have no factual basis for?

Yeah but what was "blown out of porportion"?, did you blow three guys at the Xmas office party while photocopying yer vag and handing out prints to staffers?

Or did you snog one guy and he told everyone you shagged....too many variables!

Mia, my comment was tongue-in-cheek. :)

Among the said persons circle of friends, you'd be anathema. But, then, (to be blunt) that may already be the case. Herd mentality, y'know.

Among the brain-functioning, there shouldn't be any problems.

Yea after asking around the finger has been pointed at 1 person only. They are so pathetic it seems they went around every department that they knew someone who worked their and told anyone willing to listen!

I can see you being banned for that so just to say Mods I can sense he was joking (I hope:o) and no offence was taken/

Well, the brain functioning/those who know you will dismiss the claims. And if there are neither of those in your workplace, then that workplace is a lost cause. Somewhere to just ignore 'em all.

I can't stand roumers, the people who start them and the ones who repit them.

So i would get as many of those people who pointed the finger and the "acused" sort of speak and ash him/her directly.

Thats good advice, but be careful. Get too many to say something and it'll be suspicious. Yer one will figure out it was said back to you. You don't get people individually getting a conscience like that. Maybe get as many to do it as one collective group. That'd make it less supsicious. As if they had a chance to talk about it.

    I'm a devious one, me.

    Hmmm what?
I work in an office, I spend half my days on boards. What exactly are you getting at here!
Jaysus this situation arose from people jumping to their own conclusions, don't really need anymore of that thanks.
And to think I was only sticking up for you too, Gos my faith in the human race has taken an al time low this weekend.

I presume that any banning he'd get is a slap on the wrist.

^ OFGS!....you're faith in human kind is crushed?....little OTT imo, you swear i kicked your puppy. As to your dilema, it's tricky....rumours are never nice, but that's the point of them.

You should try confront it head on imo, get to the motivation behind the rumour....expose that and you'll expose in person in question.

Yea I thought those that I considered good friends would have tried to put a halt to the rumours, instead they didn't even inform me of them so I could put things right. Ya can't really trust anyone can ya!
I'm thinking it might be best to ignore it, it's probably a good thing we're not back at work for a while, will give me time to make a rational decision.
