UPC cable is now 100% Nagravison 3 a secure encryption system.

Hopefully UPC will be able to focus it's efforts on adding new channels now?

Great news indeed. It's a pity though that everyone who doesn't steal has to pay for implementation of security measures to stop those who do. I dread to think how much UPC have had to stump up for the right to use that encryption, and all the costs of issuing new cards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 500 ✭✭✭who is this

Not much I imagine -- when they paid for Nagravision's earlier implementations, they were supposed to be secure. Quite evidently they werent so I'd say upgrade costs arent huge.

I reckon the main expense was the equipment - the new cards etc. I'd say thats where Nagravision makes most of the money

Does this mean they might upgrade their dreadful existing boxes and change the software on it to become more user friendly? That purple menu system is DIRE and sooo slow to load!!

The Purple system is not a UPC box it is an old NTL one.

Ask for one of the newer UPC boxes they use a different Guide and software.

I heard that Nagravison 3 has already been cracked in the US, if its true then those boxes will be back at the of the summer.

Not going into detail as that is not allowed in this forum, but yes N3 has been hacked but extracting keys is totally different story.

N3 is going to stay secure for a very long time to come I hope so UPC can concentrate on getting us a better service... :D

Nope, they have a small workaround called iks, which is basically card sharing. Basically sharing the ECMs over the internet from a legit card in a cam.

Requires some sort of a sub to a dodgy cardsharer, these servers could be taken down easy enough if the CC wanted to and your ip address can be identified.

By no means is it like the old dodgyboxes, and doubt we will ever, defiantly not on a large scale see it over here.

Since the change to the new encryption I wonder -
    • How many people cancelled their UPC service? i.e were they only using it so that they would have a connection and therefore use a "doggy box"?
    • How many of UPC's customers who had a basic connection upgraded to a premium package?
    • Has Sky seen a higher than usual take up in the UPC areas?
I always felt that UPC didn't push the issue of these boxes too hard while they waited on the new encryption - doing that would have moved people to Sky...

I'd say most went FTA or just kept the basic

Im pretty sure their was a report recently on upc, and their subscriber base had dropped. I cant remember how much it dropped but im sure some were due to these boxes going.

    Thanks.

The number of people on UPC may have dropped but they have only lost the freeloaders.

UPC for me is pretty good tv package good phone and really good broadband.

UPC without the freeloaders will have to win custom and real competition is what we want.

I am all for choice if people are happy with Sky then fine.
People that wanted something for nothing will not find the grass very green with Sky 15 euro for each extra room and the need for an Eircom line for multi room.

As for people going for free Sat I wonder how long it will be till they miss their Football and Movies?

3 debits on my account Eircom Sky and UPC is what sent me to the 3 in 1 package from UPC.

If money was not a consideration I would have Sky for TV Eircom for Phone and UPC for broadband.

UPC is the only one of the 3 that can offer all 3 and save me some money.

UPC have made improvements this year.
The bit rate on channels had gone up HD has been introduced and contention in my area has been addressed with more bandwidth added to their broadband.

This year Sky has also improved more HD channels and install is free in many cases plus 3D coming soon.
However I will not fork out to 3 different providers and SKY has no broadband or phone service here.

Eircom had gotten worse this year if anything.

People who had those boxes have a choice now Free to Air Satellite Sky or UPC.

If people want to go for Sky in more then one room they will have to add an Eircom line to the price.

My guess is most will go for Sky and keep the basic UPC in other rooms.

Either way the free lunch is over welcome to the real world.

Also for those that say Sky has a better tv service people should remember they maintain this by making people pay for the channels they watch.

Nagravison 3 is a newer encryption system then Sky's NDS Videoguard and that has not been hacked so I think N3 is pretty safe.

One more thing UPC brings in money for Sky with subscriptions to movies and sports.
Sky was not going to let their channels be watched for nothing they insisted on the N3 too.

MMDS is the wireless UPC it has not fully switched to Nagra 3 yet.

If you are out in the sticks UPC offer a microwave tv service with a small antenna on your house.
This is the last part of the service to switch to N3 but it only has weeks or days left.

My first post is correct UPC CABLE is secure MMDS will follow very shortly.

Okay guys, be VERY careful of what you say on this thread, the lock will be in at first sign of trouble.

Not much to talk about, Nagra 3 is a "Closed system"

UPC done a good job, something we would probaly never seen old NTL do before they went bankrupt.

people may think upc is good value and some think that sky is, but i would not go for either. endless repeats and plus one channels, and the same programs simply moving around the various channels. take the two newest discovery channels dmax and quest(and of course plus ones)they just take programs from the other discovery channels that we have seen and payed for. all the quality boxing and wrestling is ppv, they tried with the football(premplus)but it failed. now that they have setantas premiership games they might try again to make it ppv. i have a free to air dish and reciever and have all the free uk channels and plenty more, i get the 4 irish channels through my aeriel and i get to see all the premier league football and just about any sport i want and all new movies on my laptop free(and can view them on my big screen tv via 2 cables)and lots of free tv channels. my free to air dish also has a second lnb giving me hotbird satellite, recently i watched the david haye fight for free(ok the audio was foreign but so what)and sky charged extra for it on ppv. sky/upc no thanks im happy with what i have and i only have to pay for my tv licence every year, if people are happy with sky/upc ok but im just saying there is more than those 2 options.

    Free AND legally? Nowhere.

there are lots of sites online to view movies/sports/top tv shows. as for the legal side of it,well if your only viewing the content thats freely available to everyone on the net there is no problem. the person who makes the content available would be breaking the law(if they do not own the copyright on the content they are making available)its a very popular way of viewing premium tv. some sites are just click on a channel and view it(the quality on these sites can be varied from poor to very good and even in hd) and other sites need video players which can be downloaded free and for the most part they offer a much higher picture quality. example i can watch discovery channel and national geographic channel in very high quality free online(ok they are meant for the asian market,so you get asian subtitles at the end of the screen, but all the programs are in english and are the same as those meant for the english speaking market) i have watched films like saw 6,paranormal activity etc in pretty good quality,i can see all my football(all tho im getting sick of watching my team liverpool get beat)and i can see ppv events. some sites only cater for certain things, i just have saved all the sites i view on a regular basis to my favourites, i have a few video players installed its that easy. you can even view sky tv online(all legal)via sky player. if you know some one who has sky tv and has either sky broadband or sky multi room ask them if you can use there account to log on to sky player(up to four computers can use one account)all you need is a name and address and the sky card number of a mate or familly member. you can contribute a small fee towards the monthly bill and you will get all the subscribed for sky channels, only snag is only the first computer registered will get access to sky movies and sky sports (if they are part of the package payed for) and the other three computers will only get access to the basic channels. and as i say its legal as its all payed for (and four computers being used on any one card is within skys rules).

I'd say that's questionable at best

if you had say a so called dodgy box that you bought from someone and it provide you with all the pay channels free(they would have broken the law as they would have sold you a box with illegal modifications enabling free viewing of pay tv) if you then connect that box up to say sky tv or upc you would then be breaking the law as you would be connected to their networks(this would be viewed as theft in the eyes of the law). i have not modified any device that allows me to view pay tv, i do not sell such devices to anyone else, i do not upload or make available any content to the net that has a copyright or otherwise, and i do not own or run any site that does. i only view what is available free to view to many millons onlne(and as long as no one does this they are within the law),and im sure they will do there best to close this particular avenue in the future but untill then i will have happy viewing. i was only offering my thoughts on various companies services and giving an alternative to pay tv (after all we are in a worldwide recession, people are out of work).

(after all we are in a worldwide recession, people are out of work).

i dont see how people moving the fta will help with the recession

and by moving to fta tv you are only going to cause more people to be out of work

because the tv company upc or sky will not make enough money to employ so many people

Do UPC provide a free upgrade to this new box? I got UPC installed in march (when they were UPC!) and have that purple crappy box which the EPG goes so slow "Gathering Data..." all the time I have to manually flick thru the channels, also made 3 or 4 favorite channels and for some reson the box lost em? If this new box is more relyable will they replace it?
