Not a brilliant photo either, I took it from my car as I was passing by.

    Some from driving on Saturday

Apostlate Maris on Bereford Place opposite Custom House.
???????? Merchants on junction of Aston Quay and Prices Lane
Royal Liver Insurance on Ballast House, Aston Quay
Very faded sign saying Fruit (maybe more) above the dodgy lane beside the Busstop? newsagent on Eden Quay

This Cadbury's ad used to be at Pearse Station, but may have been put up for a film?

And what a shame this lot aren't still around. I remember the swastikas adoring their chimney stack in Ballsbridge, up to at least the 1980s. Unreal!

Was driving near last night, the chimney is still there, could not see it properly so not sure if it is still decorated...

Always see a chemist sign on the brickwork, from the train, somewhere between Connolly Station, and Pearse Street. The train would often stop at this location. One of those things that I always saw. Will take a photo of it next time. IIRC, there is still a chemist there.

Absolutely excellent thread. I'm a Town Planner by profession so to see people genuinely interested in the preservation of things like this is fantastic.

    Thanks, we appreciate the feedback.

To be honest I'm surprised at the level of interest in the thread, indeed I've found myself now looking around Dublin for 'ghost signs' and have become more and more aware of the amount of 'ghost buildings/businesses' about the place.

    Cheers.

It's on Palace Street - (The shortest street in Dublin and with only 2 addresses. ;)).

It may not have been mentioned as it is still a functioning charity (although I'm not sure if it still operates from that premises).

They moved to Lower Leeson St. and yes still operate. The original building was sold a few years back and is now a family home - there was a feature on it in the Irsih Times a few years ago.

That's the original Kelly's Grocers that gave Kellys Corner it's name.

...but does anyone know if this entrance around the corner in College Green was the original?

    Cool pictures.

That is still part of JJ Fox - it houses part of the 'keep'. JJ Fox own that entire building, and the entrance was always on Grafton Street.

Kapp & Peterson were always at the Grafton St address, so the sign is an old advertisement for them.

For some reason he refused to sell his premises to Irish Life when they built the mall so they had to build the Irish Life Mall around his shop..he never sold anything either.

    Great photos.

The Burtons building is called Burton Chambers - it's written over one of the entrances.

I was in what's left of the Swastika Laundry this morning, and all that's left is the chimney stack, but they've cleaned it up and removed the swastikas. It's right by the entrace to Jackie Skelly in the Oval Building.

I stand to be corrected on this but my mother says she remembers the shop in O'Connell Street. I also found a reference to it here.
    Does anyone know for sure?

EDIT: I think I've found confirmation here.

Aint going to read 100 odd posts to see if this is mentioned, but the bottom 3 feet of DIT Aungier st is really old brick work and it had Jacobs Biscuits or something to that effect on it!

And that factory is gone a very lont time!

Rory's is still there isn't it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 495 ✭✭dimejinky99

Rory's is definitely still there. Took the pic as the sign looked quite old and has some craft. You don't see signwriting much like this anymore.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 9,700 ✭✭✭tricky D

Another quite large faded one at the junction of Fairview Strand and Philipsburgh Avenue on the southside, facing west. Again was driving past and could only make out grocer and merchant on it.

Guys, 'ghost signs' are old signage for a business which has long since been consigned to history, 'Rorys' is still trading.

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 11,001 ✭✭✭✭Masada

Yeah rorys is still there, A good spot for angling gear and the lads in there are dead sound. Last time i was there though, I ended up having to get violent with some filth who hang around on the palm tree seat thingys outside scrounging people for money.

Here's one i took the other day, its High street up near Christ Church., The pic is terrible but it was lashing and i was in a moving car at the time.,:)

There was something about that old pram building that always creeped me out a bit. Maybe it was the whole baby thing :D

Paddy Whelan's old prams/bicycles shop on Cork Street is pretty cool looking, I just noticed it last week coming back from Lidl.

    twinbillycorkstqt4.jpg

    Cool!

Nice to see it's still there.

I was talking to my Dad in law about the place last week.
He had lots of good stories about that shop.

    It was his Dad's place!

We have a few pics of that place when it was still running including one at it's launch in 1947ish

The minute I saw this thread a few weeks ago, this was the first sign I thought of and I remembered to get it today. It's on Dame st, just at the lights across to the Golden Goolie. There's another sweeps sign somewhere in Dublin and it's an older different design but I can't remember where it is.
    Photo0412.jpg

Also, does anyone have any pictures of Lucky Coade on Dame St.? It's now a cafe called the millstone but the Lucky Coade was a great spot.
