Didn't anyone pay attention in school???!

Word - Mispronciation - Correct pronounciation

    Column - Col-YOOM - Col-lumm

    Vehicle - VEH-Hickle - Vee-ih-kull

    Safety - Safe-Fet-Tee - Sayf-tee

    Advertisment - Adver-TIIZ-ment - Ad-verr-tiss-ment

    Film - Fill-Um - fiiilm

    Transparent - Trans-PAIR-ant - Trans-pah-rant

Really sticks in my craw when I hear "educated" people on the news mangling the language like this.

I reckon removing the i in your pronunciation of million is as bad as adding a y in your pronunciation of column.

Fire out a few examples there, I want to agree with you. I pronounce it kolyum, but it was how I was taught. Thing is, if we are to go exactly by spelling alone, you'd wonder why in either instance the 'n' wasn't phonetically used. So I think theres exceptions to the rule :/

I'm not sure I follow you.

As far as I know, the accepted pronunciation of million and column is mill-yuhn and kol-uhm respectively. To complain that culchies don't use the i in million while admitting to using an imaginary y in column sticks out.

Some culchies do pronounce million as millon, of that there is no doubt .

No thats fine, will try explain.

Well, I'd agree with you on the first count. But I was taught that the 'n' in column was silent first off. So million (which phonetically ends with 'n' is pronounced) shouldn't be compared here.

I believe the 'y' sound in 'column' comes from the dropping of the letter 'n' in the word, and then 'u' between two consonants means you've to give the 'u' phonetic advantage.

That still doesn't explain the phonetic inclusion of an "e" at the end

Have a quick look back there, I never said there was an 'e' or an 'e' sound at the end of column :)

Admittedly you only incorrectly inserted a "y", but someone earlier compared it to "legume"

vehemently, how do u say that?

I added a 'y' as a phonetic understanding of my pronunciation of the word. I think I remember the legúme post, but if I agreed with it I would have thanked it as a way of agreement. The french pronunciation of legúme is 'legewm' sound, because of the accent on the 'e', and therefore irrelevant.

I have to admit though, the thread made me think about the word, and even doubt myself. But I'm a stickler for some things, and pronunciation is one of them.

I know it was "only" phonetic, but I'd still view it as incorrect.
