I usually find that people on social welfare are more concerned about meeting the Gas or Electricity bill on time.
Plus finding the money to feed and clothe a family would be a high priority I would imagine.

Who are these people you are referring to?

Are they friends or acquaintances of yours, or is this thread about heresay OP?

Do you think that this is heresay? This is a reality belive it or not and people here know it.

Its a necessity that you cant afford !if you can afford this "necessity"on welfare then your welfare should be cut.

So someone who scrapes and cuts back to eventually get together enough money to buy a car (which is most likely pretty old and beat up) should have their dole cut, but someone who boozes and smokes all their payment and has no money left on dole day shouldn't? You'd actually be punishing people who managed to cut back enough to purchase something useful.

Rich ould life you have, I shop in guineys and lidl:pac::pac::pac:

Oh ya, €2.50 for 3 baby vesties in Tescos - Thats the high life for you;)

And Aldi's and Lidl are actually more expensive than Tescos now that Tescos reduced their prices.

I am so tight on cash, I will shop in Supervalu, Dunnes and Tesco's simultaneously just to get the bargains.

If you have a young child and no income, €204.30 a week is not going to last long with bills!!!!!

Where the effing hell do dole-monkeys get the money between their great social lives and their PS3's to still afford cars????

There are people who need the dole now because they have lost their jobs, but people wwho live the high lives on the dole all their lives are causing others all to be tarred with the same brush. That is why hard working tax payers are peeved at everyone on welfare. They think we are all trying to sponge!

I find it a bit rich that some people who have been claiming social welfare benefits complain that they find it hard to keep a car on the road.
Are these people for real?they get handouts from the state and complain that they can barely afford a car!
I'm not talking about someone who recently lost their job,I'm talking about career spongers that think they should or have a right to own a car.
It says a lot for the welfare state here when people that have no work are able to put a car on the road,I always imagined that when you have no income you might go hungry for a day or two

A car is necessary for the type of work some people do. If they sell their car, then they greatly decrease their chance of finding another job.

Eh, this is for dole claimers unless your talking about people working cash in hand.

Yeah right. You're just busy building up a straw man of all these lazy people on the dole complaining about how expensive it is to run a car to have a rant about. Who are these people? How many of them have you heard doing this? I find it odd, given that this is a reality and we all know it according to you, my own experiences in the dole queue don't in any way reflect it.

That's completely beside the point. Social welfare money is absolutely not to provide a person with keeping a car on the road.

A surprising amount of people on the dole are actually looking for work you know. Depending on the job, not having a care could easily decrease their chance of finding another job. Not to mention the lack of public transport in most areas outside the major cities and trying to get to interviews, etc.

I have to say that I hate hearing that €204.30 is not a lot. There are a lot of extras that are never mentioned. Like Rent Allowance, Fuel Allowance, Back to School allowance, subsidised childcare and many more.

I work full time and after paying out for my rent ( which would be mostly covered if I was unemployed) and pay the childminder ( which I wouldn't need if unemployed) I am left with little more than the dole. BTW I've no problem with the recently unemployed but have a huge problem with the long term unemployed.

I work in a housing office for a local authority and everyday see the whole dependancy culture that this country has produced. It's a disgrace.

But if they're willing / able to cut back on their spending to the point that they can run a car, why shouldn't they?

Well based on a weekly allowance of 204 eur a week I don't think running a car would be beyond anyone. And I'm talking about a 1L 10 year old car. Would probably cost about a months dole to run and you have to remember that the petrol and insurance etc is being pumped back into the real economy. You're making the assumption that everyone lives within distance of proper transport. Where I'm from there goes one bus through the town at 12pm everyday towards Longford. That's it. What are people supposed to do other than that? Depend on lifts? FFS

Maybe dole is too high but for god sake depriving people of a transport option when the government is not providing same is beyond sick.

Yea but...You are missing the point.
If you have excess money after your social welfare pay check then you probably are getting too much...

I've no problem with that at all.

That is a ridiculous thing to say, as people differ in how to save money when things are tight.

There are different circumstances surrounding a lot of people out of work, recently or not.

imeddyhobbs, I am closing this thread as you seem to be posting to get a rise out of people here in After Hours.

It's starting to work and I don't want to hand out bans to people who might rise to your bait later.

Try Here should you wish to continue your rant.
