God... Could you imagine the shame of our kids actually knowing their national anthem?

    [/sarcasm]

This isn't about being patriotic, nobody is asking them to go and die for the Republic, it's the anthem of our country and it should be a requirement.

What also should be taught in school is when you pump your right fist in the air in the middle of a nightclub/function room while in a drunken stupor during the anthem (if they play it), you're not hard, you're a tosser.

For a start it should be "Laochra Fáil" not "Fianna Fáil".

Anyway who cares, its not like we're a real country anyhow.

At this stage you may as well redefine Gaelic as "English with an Irish accent" because thats all most people in this country can manage. This of course is down to not only the campaign by the English to kill the language but also De Valera putting his beloved child rapists in control of education.I don't blame those who can't speak it for not having tried hard enough,it was never going to work with the way it was managed by those in authority.

Sure why dont you get Jedward to write a new one for you all?Im sure most of the population would be all for it,or maybe a competition in The "Irish" Sun.

    Yours Sincerely,

    Butthurt Gael.

♫ Ireland! Ireland! Together standing tall... ♫

Really though, I learned it in primary school. I thought kids do. What the hell else Irish are they "learning" then?

Every child in my school knows the national anthem and we sing it at every assembly(weekly). I'm fairly sure most schools teach it...:confused:whats the problem??

I was more or less taught it in school. I think all kids should know it, if only just so they can sing it at Gaelic and International matches!

And as for not teaching it because it's about killing and war... so many anthems are: French anthem is totally bloodthirsty; British one has references to killing fenians and frustrating their knavish tricks; American one is all about war and bombs bursting in air; etc...

I wouldn't agree with singing it every morning, I'd certainly agree with some form of it being taught in schools.

If we have to engage in nationalistic fervour I'd much prefer something like the lyrics of 'Irelands' Call'.
I'd keep the tune of our present ditty, however; makes my eyes well up every time.

Bloody right Amhran Na Bhfiann should be thought in schools. as Gaeilge at that. Count ourselves lucky at the moment, It may soon be banned and replaced this

The proper version should be taught, sinne laochra fail. No way should those Fianna Fail scumbags be in our national anthem:mad::mad:

Don't think there is a reference to fenians - scots maybe not fenians.
Would have thought a Chelsea fan would have been well aware of that!
I disagree with singing it every morning - what are we - North Korea.

I think it should be taught. It's no more a violent song than many other anthems.

That "Irelands Call" is a musical abomination.

or as we like to call it, irish. chip on shoulder? it's not about the language, it's about the anthem. and if kevin kilbane can sit down and learn it, then shame on anyone who was brought up in this country who can't!!

I would never sing that anthem every morning, maybe at a match e.t.c If I had to. I learnt it in primary in all its entirety but nowadays all I know is the first 4 lines or so.

Patriotism in this country usually means your a dissident who paints their car Green white and Orange

No harm whatsoever in kids being taught the anthem.

It's just the mongos that think you're duty-bound to stand up for it that should be put down.

The lyrics are about sitting around in a field at night, with a rifle, waiting to take a pot-shot at a brit...
...takes me back about 10/15 years or so.
Wonderful sentiments to be teaching to children.

All the third classes were taught it in my school except mine as our teacher was from up north.

I still don't know the words.

    Humm!

I'm surprised that there would be any question of whither our countries song which represents our nationality at all sporting events (except rugby) and Political summits world wide would be thought to our next generation of (our children) leaders!

YES Damn right it should, is it not????

thanks for bringing it to my attention though!!

    Is our children learning?

I think it's important that our sportsmen and women should be taught to mime it, at least, so that when the camera zooms in on them we can feel proud to see them appear to be belting out "Amhran na Bhfiann".

I guess it's up to the teacher.

    should be in the curriculum!

I was taught it in my school until we all knew it. Didn't take long. About 2 weeks of everyone doing it everyday and the whole class knew it. Even the special ones.

    Here's the translated version:

    Verse1:
We'll sing a song, a soldier's song, With cheering, rousing chorus
    As round our blazing fires we throng, The starry heavens o'er us;
Impatient for the coming fight, And as we wait the mornings light
here in the silence of the night, We'll chant a soldier's song.

    Chorus:
Soldiers are we, whose lives are pledged to Ireland
Some have come from a land beyond the wave, Sworn to be free,
    no more our ancient sireland
    Shall shelter the despot or the slave;
tonight we man the Bearna Baoghal, In Erin's cause.
come woe or weal; 'Mid cannon's roar and rifle's peal
    We'll chant a soldier's song.

    Verse2:
In valley green, on towering crag, Our fathers fought before us,
And conquered 'neath the same old flag, That's proudly floating o'er us.
We're children of a fighting race, That never yet has known disgrace,
And as we march, the foe to face, We'll chant a soldier's song.

    Verse3:
    Sons of the Gael! Men of the Pale!, The long watched day is breaking;
The serried ranks of Inisfail, Shall set the Tyrant quaking.
Our camp fires now are burning low; See in the east a silv'ry glow,
Out yonder waits the Saxon foe, So chant a soldier's song.

Yes I think it should be taught to kids in school. I know the first and last few lines of the chorus!!

I think it should either be taught in schools or just got rid of. The current situation where possibly half of all Irish people don't know it is not on. People should know the words of their anthems. I don't know of any other country whose citizens don't know the words or the meaning of their anthem like we don't.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,598 ✭✭✭Dante

Yes it should....I still don't know all the words to it and I'm 18. I wish I was taught it when I was younger because I'm too lazy to do it now.

Off topic I know but I'll never forget our nationalistic National school teacher reciting this in class one day [in the 1950s to a class of 8 year olds]

Who fears to speak of Ninety-Eight?
    Who blushes at the name?
When cowards mock the patriot's fate.
Who hangs his head for shame?

One young lad answered "I do" and the teacher battered the daylights out of him.

The poor kid didn't realise they were the words to a famous rebel song, and thought the class was being asked a question. The teacher thought the lad was taking the piss.
