Hi, does anyone think the National Anthem should be taught to kids in school from a young age?

I know in USA they take a Pledge of Allegiance each morning before school (and in some cases they sing their National Anthem)

So why do we not do something similar here?:pac::pac:

It's a song about going out and killing people.
Of course it should be taught to kids.

They should focus more on spelling. In particular the difference between words like "thought" and "taught".

Taught yes, sung each morning no. And I'd include non-national kids because if they're that young then chances are they're going to be first/second generation Irish so they'll be brought up Irish, in effect.

I was taught this in primary school (sort of) was that not the case everywhere? I don't see the controversy here op.

Should be taught; its easier than learning the bloody language to be perfectly honest.;) I learnt the verses that noone sings.:D

we're in the middle of a peace process in this island we need a new less confrontational anthem for the future generations

The anthem's in Irish, fairly few people know the translation and even if they do, it's hardly going to cause offence to the Irish is it?

Yes, hopefully it'll help them understand Irish better. For a lot of kids it's the most Irish they'll ever hear.

we learnt it in primary and its stuck ever since, Im glad I know it ,
my son (3) knows it coz it was taught to him in Montessorri, now I get odd looks and quick glances to see where my tricolour tattoos are (they don't exist)in the supermarket when he breaks out in a rendition of Sine Fianna Fail in the dairy aisle:)

I believe it should be taught in schools. Not sung every morning or anything like that but kids should know the words to it.

I was never, ever taught it in school. I couldn't go further than the first two lines. However I know every word to La Marseillaise thanks to a very enthousiastic French teacher.

maybe we should open our new anthem up to some product placement. The advertisement money would help us a lot more than children knowin the old anthem.

Yes, we should teach our national anthem to school children, as part of cultural education.

And yes, dlofnep knows the anthem and doesn't mumble through the middle bits. I didn't actually learn it in school. Taught it to myself over the course of a week. It's handy enough to pick up. 20 minutes a night for a week and you'll have it down.
