Easy for you to say, Mr. Smultron.
I've actually moved to a proper IDE for Java :)

Need someone to hold your hand? I still write my labs in Notepad++

... now that I think of it, that's probably why they never compile.

Eclipse is isn't as clunky as other IDEs. Also manually syncing my code with my subversion repo would be a pain.

Yep two individual reports (calculations and healthsafetysustainabilityrecycling) and two group reports (design report and project management report).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,699 ✭✭✭Brian

Ah. Well, I have to have something to do on the train.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 639 ✭✭✭devinejay

It's not going well, but I'm doing my best to hammer out the group reports as best I can so my unfathomable laziness doesn't drag down any other group members.

I've done ... the health and safety. That's all. There's always tomorrow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 582 ✭✭✭TheAmateur

Phew well at least there are other people in the same boat as me. :D
I've still got feckin sustainability and recycling to go...

Whats the second years hogging the JCR these days?

Congrats to the teams that got through and commiserations to those that didn’t. For those that didn’t, don’t worry, you are now teamed with people better than you.

Also, I'd say some people got a fright with that 2E3 plagiarism e-mail. I always write my own ****ty code.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 639 ✭✭✭devinejay

That 2e3 thing was bound to happen. I don't write my own code, but at least I don't take someone else's code, I'm counting on the lost CA marks to motivate me to start tackling this stuff!

Nice to see people already using "this" and pointer dereferencing by Lab 3.

Who is running that shelter project?

Dr. Dermot O Dwyer and Dr. Ruth Collins. Pretty sure everyone involved is in that TrinityHaus thing.

Yeah, how did people know how to do that? I write my own too, but my last week's lab didn't work. I sent it in anyway though. It has to be worth more than something that's plagiarized doncha think?
And of course this week's depends on that one, so I'm back to square one trying to figure it out again. What I'm stuck on is finding the largest id or mark or whatever in the list, remove it from the list and add it to the next slot of a new list. Sounds fine in theory but I keep getting it wrong.:(

I went to the first 2E3 lecture I've been to in a while yesterday and it's the same as it always was. Whatever way he describes everything, it's always really hard to see how it's relevant to us or what use this info is in applications. "Computers tend to do this, and this bit refers to how computers do that, and all of this text here means that this registry will access that memory location."

I've a feeling that it's not his fault either, that there is just something inherently difficult about lecturing computer science to a class who aren't 100% focused on computer related subjects. The things we do in 2E3 lectures these days are awfully far away from what is being covered in all the other modules.

The problem with 2E3 is that is too detailed for Civil and Mech but not detailed enough for those that want to do Computer.

Yeah that hits the nail on the head, a lot clearer than what I was saying.

When I did 2E3 back in the day our labs were passed on getting a simple 2D SDL based game running (a large amount of the code was provided to us, ie drawplayer, drawnme, drawweapon, etc. WE just had to figure out the position to draw things each frame). For the civil/mech crowd all they needed to do was getting a player moving round the screen shooting projectiles and they got a high mark. For the computers crowd people were doing all sorts of stuff from full on space invaders clones to multiplayer cooperative gameplay. Was a good project that allowed people to do as much or as little as they wanted.

And imo the best thing about it was that you had graphical feedback. A console program that prints out the area of a pizza is boring as hell but a relatively simple bid of code that moves an object around the screen is interesting and engaging even if the code that enables it is relatively simple.

That seems to be it alright, I've been looking at Dr. Collins' notes from 2007 though, and I like the way he taught how to use SDL to make animations and stuff. I think that stuff would make it a whole lot more interesting for our lot, rather than the constant cmd window stuff we do. It's probably harder now as well though because we've fewer lectures.

"Design your shelter to a budget of €100 in your elected country"

    -three weeks later-

"OK, you have €100 to build your shelter"

The whole "Build it" then "You're not allowed do anything that might help in the process of building it like use a ladder or a hammer, so innovate (read: magic that bad boy into existence)" thing is what gets me

And it's just too optimistic to hope that sponsorship for this will still be there by the time we get to next year isn't it. I mean they took roger west's sponsorship for that amazing concrete book away, and the prize for winning the mangonel competition the year before. We are officially the most un-sponsored year ever. Ever. :(

Don't complain too much we got sweet FA in terms of free stuff. But wow a free mac book pro?
