Interesting that they're proposing that 1E11 be examined, considering that 1E11 was only instated this year, and SF didn't do it.

This weeks C++ sucks balls, granted I haven't had a huge go at it yet, but I really don't like the look of it.

Do you not think it is a very clever way of finding primes?

Indeed it is, and I marvelled at following your recent tweet, but the way he asks us to do it, with a global array of bits, is a little lost on me. If was just old school integers I wouldn't mind.

+1. I've managed to get that bit to work, but I actually have no idea what he wants us to do with the other array. It doesn't help that I haven't been able to do most of his tutorials either. But I have to admit, I haven't opened the book yet. I suppose it might all be explained in there...

I keep meaning to have a proper go at those tutorials, but so far I've only managed to get the first couple of questions before I'm lost. I reckon I'm going to give the lab my best shot just focusing on integers, then if I have time before Wednesday, work out how to do the rest. I've plenty to catch up on elsewhere for the mo!!

You know that array of bits thing ... uh, I'm just using a boolean array. Same diff, right? if (prime==true) std::cout<<num; ?

Indeed he does apparently weigh a kilonewton. His lecture notes say his name is Peter Flynn, but I'd rather stick to Mr.Peter

Also, as for the 2e3 assignments, well it's not like I had much planned this weekend anyway...:pac:

Word on the street is the class reps raised the 2e3 issue at a meeting today, dunno what or even if anything will come of it though. But he has to have at least heard about the 40+ people who showed up to the programming support centre on tuesday...
Does anyone know how much of the 40% the tutorials/labs are worth? Seriously hoping it's not 20/20 because as hard as the labs are, I find the tutorials even worse.

Word travels very fast in second year seemingly.

Yeah the tutorials are terrible alright, it's really hard to pick up any marks at all compared to the labs.

:( Just got around to reading my emails... nobody had even mentioned that schols talk today. Feck. Anyone go? Any good?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,488 ✭✭✭mathew

mathew... lyons... it all makes sense now... well thanks I'll keep that in mind, kinda still at the stage where I don't know enough to have any questions though :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 639 ✭✭✭devinejay

I had a feeling it would be you mathew when I saw the EngSoc email, kinda sorry I didn't go now, but tbh I've sorta given up on schols at the moment (before I even started!)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 582 ✭✭✭TheAmateur

yeah it seems crazy daunting/impossible at the moment, I hardly know what's going on right now never mind the stuff we did last year! Also it gets me down that there would be at least one question from 2e3 guy... I mean people have actually started going to other groups' tutorials as well as their own just to finish them and hand them up!

cheers mathew! gonna give em a shot now, not too optimistic tho... ne

Get an application in anyway.. you cant do anything if you havnt applied. Deadline is the 2nd of November. You can withdraw or not show up if you want.
If you want information have a look at www.tcdlife.ie/scholar theres a good bit on there. FAQ section is quite good! (its in the about section by the way)
    :)

What???? 2E3 has been messed up yet again? What have I missed??? (sorry, have been out of the loop for a long time)

Surely they learned some lessons from the JW debacle? Surely....

Not at all, Dr Jones is a very good lecturer it's just the assignments are very hard this year in comparison to last year's.

    Disagree!

2e3 aint too bad. The labs are okay if you work at them and just do what it says in the lecture notes and the malik book.

But those tutorials are crap and both jeremy and paul dont seem to care if you can't do it. Yer man paul is a bit of a tool. He treats you like an idiot if you ask him any question at all.

oh and i remember talking to devinejay last night in bondai. pretty sure you're the only boardsie who ive been able to put a face to.

I've a feeling if I put in a week of solid effort I could catch up on 2e3, but at the moment all my extra time is taken up with 2e9!

which is funny because it was Baza who pointed you out to me, he's a sly one!
