Don't lock this thread. OP, hot water coming out of your cold taps is worrying. How hot was the water, and did it come out continuously? If it was very hot (about 40 Degrees Celcius), then I'd be getting onto my landlord. Depending on what type of immersion heating you have, it could be a dangerous problem.

There is a thermostat in your hot water tank that should cut off when the water gets too hot. If this is faulty, it could cut off too late/not at all. Water will get too hot and enter the cold tank. Eventually, after long enough, hot water will fill the cold tank. The cold tank is usually made of strong plastic and is not designed to hot very hot water. It could warp and split, spilling hot water through the roof and potentially scald anyone below.

Not trying to frighten you, it might be nothing, if the water was only warm I wouldn't be worried at all.

I feel like i'm wrecking the AH spirit here by giving a serious reply, but +1 to the above, get a plumber in as soon as possible. This sounds like a bust thermostat, and i've also seen immersion systems in ireland where they didnt bother installing one.

This is harmful to the cold water plumbing system and is obviously a dangerous situation if you've got scalding water coming out of the cold water taps
