http://www.rte.ie/aertel/116-01.html:mad:, ive never drank coke anyway, im Pepsi all the way, boycott this shower, coca cola has been caught many times including selling bottled water as spring water:mad:, and what better way to save money than buy Pepsi at 1.58 as opposed to Coke at 1.79.

coke and pepsi are both muck imo:)

Have they sacked all the workers at the factory? If we all boycott them, won't they all lose their jobs?

I shall tell ye a interesting story, over in Newfoundland in Canada you will find no store or shop, pub nor restaurant selling coca cola, why? because they screwed workers there many years ago and the whole place boycotted them:D, time for us Irish to do the same.

Oh and why dont we boycott Dell too, and then every other American Multi-National over the coming years that leaves due to our over inflated wages and costs, for christ sake it wont be long before we've boycotted every product and service available to the consumer!

The sole purpose of a company is to make money, not to provide jobs. If it feels it can make more money elsewhere then so be it, Coke owes this country nothing, nor the redundent employees (aside from the obvious payments associated), there were paid well im sure up til the decision was made.

As for the alleged comment from Coca Cola "we dont give two fcuks about the union", fair play to them, unions will have this country crippled shortly if they have their way.

Coke from a glass bottle FTW, I used work in a Coca Cola distribution centre and we were allowed have a few bottles of whatever we wanted every day, it was always coke from a glass bottle I went for... its just so damn nice.

But seeing as Im from Tipp Town and the workers in another Coca Cola distriution centre wont have a job for much longer im all for buoycotting the bastards.

No one has a right to a job, Coca Cola want to make money, they are not a public company, they go wherever is more competitive.
Sure they can stay here but expect to pay more.

    I won't be boycotting anything.

This remonds me of Sabena a bit. The management ca£e up with cost cutting measures and the union went on strike. Without the cost cutting the airline went bust and everyone lost their jobs.

The union then picketted outside the head office demanding their jobs back, they just couldn't get it through their thick heads that a company has to nake money or it goes bankrupt.

    http://www.wexfordpeople.ie/news/over-100-jobs-at-cocacola-1562725.html

Tell ya what, I didn't get contract renewed with a health care company, and received no extra payments or redundancy, boycott them for me :rolleyes:

boycott me arse there are hundreds, if not thousands who have had the same thing happen, you don't hear them peeing and moaning about it, they are dealoing with it like the rest of us. build a bridge....

    Boycott SIPTU

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 151 ✭✭BlueLepreachaun

Disclaimer: I'm not defending their outsourcing, they are scum.

Now thats out of the way, I can have a nice anti-SIPTU rant.

So, the SIPTU membership, who make what? €35,000-40 000 a year? at best? are having their wages garnished to pay Jack O'Connor €124,000 a year to come up with the following idea....

....they are taking 100 or so jobs...lets boycott the entire company thus putting it out of business and thus putting all of the remaining workers out of jobs.....yeh were I a member of SIPTU I'd resign and not come back until these current crop of dinosaurs who have been in charge what? a decade? are removed and someone paid the average pay of the membership, with a term limit, and some common sense, is hired instead.
I'm not going to boycott Coke just cos those SIPTU shites say so. Won't be long before the country is crippled by public sector strikes.

The irony of this is in 05 they were handing out leaflets in UCD urging the student body to lift the coke boycott because...I S H I T YOU NOT...it would cost jobs...

I'm inclined to call bullshit on that statement.

I've heard Newfoundland is one of the few places where Pepsi outsells Coke, but the idea that nowhere there stocks Coke is ridiculous, and it looks like nobody told these guys. ("F.J. Wadden is the largest distributor of Coca Cola products in Newfoundland and Labrador carrying a full line of products including (PowerAde, Dasani Water, Minute Maid Juices, Nestea, Post Mix, Fruitopia, and Premix. Along with Coca Cola, 'Waddens' is dedicated in meeting your entire beverage needs.")

As a previous poster said, its SIPTU we should be boycotting. Most of their members voted in Fianna Fail in the last election and are now throwing their toys out of the pram when they dont get their way. My mum is a public sector worker, and as i say to her - you made your bed, now you can sleep in it. SIPTU members are nothing more than spoilt little brats holding the country to ransom.

    The effects of outsourcing.

I am amazed at the lack of support for coca cola workers. But then again I am not surprised. There has been no unitity in ireland in decdades and with is not likely in the next few either. Since the health and safety legislation improved and the labour court got more people friendly the need for unions bargin power has diminished. Why? Because what they do and are perceived to do is totally different in peoples eyes. I dont see this sole blame in the eyes of the unions however they have not helped by having the jack o connor situation occur with pat kenny.

Anyway back to outsourcing. Outsourcing is the buzz word of this centuary. Its to labour what the chinese were to manufacturing. It strips all your entitlements away makes one or two people rich and the rest work for poor wages. It is reluctant to hire profession staff and would see it import cheap professionals to avoid this. It does its best to avoid paying a stamp(altough impossible) it is lobbying the govt for this. It does not pay pension rights. In many cases it requires you to pay for your own medicals and it does not pay sick. In fact if health and safety legislation and employment rights could be done away with it would think nothing of making you work hoildays and weekends as a norm. Just look at the policy of supermarkets to have you work weekends to verify this. Outsourcings primary aims is to achieve the cheapest Management, on the most productive machinery with the lowest cost production and manpower. It seems people as a raw material not as people. My sole primary goal was to exploit this to the full by a combination of short term contracts and imported labour!

Why are the unions doing nothing about this! They have been resisting it for years! But the problem is 2 fold! One with the opening of markets there has been an abundance of labour and with encouragement from goverment there has been no legislation to protect pension rights etc.

Lastly, most people dont realise they are in a company involved in outsourcing! If you wort for a company that makes someone elses label then you are involved in an outsiourcing company! Weather it be batchellors who make Tesco beans to banta global who produce microsoft ware.

The unions are not sh1te! They are powerless without your support against this but not many people seem to question this policy! If you have a problem with Jack o connor tell him. You find it easy enough to tell Mary harney what you think and she could not give a dam!

We as a country are heading towards a massive pensions minefield! Our health system is buckleing from outsourcing and our education system is under strain. Substitute teachers are the norm in education! How does that make you feel when it comes to your childs education!

Yes I have no doubt that this will lead to the usual after hours classics If you think the unions are not working make them work! and support inhouse workers. I have no membership of a union because I always worked on my own or in a management position. I laugh at the way we protect our rights but I am terrified at the future for my kids.

    Ummmmm, what?

The answer is to protect our vastly overcooked costbase? Good grief, if we were competitive as a manufacturing location we would now be starting to climb out of this mess. Outsourcing is not a dirty word and strips you of nothing. It merely recognises the need to move production to the location that offers the best balance of quality and price. Our goal should be to become a viable alternative not to protect jobs that we have zero hope of retaining.
