Ha, poor guy, sure it was only a hobbie :P

    Link

You do need an email to access the page, but basically a man of 53 was jailed for 3 years for growing weed in his garden. Some buchaile.

Metro, page two top left hand corner.

I think it's ridiculous. If it was for personal use, i don't see the problem. He wouldn't have got anything back home. 3 years is a bit much!

Well, I know for a fact he sold it to at least one person ;)

LOL it's always happening here. Whoever said he would have got nothing at home is very much mistaken. Only last week a friend took pics of an apartment across the way from him being raided because they were growing it on the balcony! There are helicopters with heat sensors flying overhead sometimes, and I once found a load of leaves along the road when I was going to the tram.

There's a hippy couple (Dutch I think also) who live three doors away and from my back window for the past few years I have witnessed some small horticultural ... eh ... shenanigans

[Tsk]..Growing your own cannabis is the riskiest way of getting hold of that particular "safer than alcohol or tobacco" drug. Everybody knows that. The black economy can't run on air. If you buy your cannabis in small quantities as and when you need it from your local dealer and you're unlucky enough to get caught because it's only a little bit the penalty will be small. So don't grow your own you'll go to jail and drug dealers have to eat too y'know.

If this is what a Dutch Gardener does, he deserves longer.

In before, "if we legalise weed we can cure cancer, fill the budget deficit and qualify for the world cu...oh wait....snooker's on...pass the Doritos".

You can't win with some. We give pissy sentences and folks are moaning, and we then hand down a fair and just sentence and folks think it's too much?

The guy is a criminal, was growing an illegal drug, was caught and jailed. Job ****ing well done!

I know a couple of lads you've dealt for years, been caught doing that, had fist fights with cops in the street and lots of fighting in general, been infront of a judge at least 3 times that I can remember and the last time they where finally sentenced to a week (well it was more than a week but that's what they served). Came out of prison dealing on the phone as they where walking out the door.

53 year DUTCH man grows a bit of weed in his back garden, for his own benefit and he gets 3 years??? That's not right, I seen the law let off old folks before I don't know why they picked on him.

That is a crazy sentence but it does sound like he may have been able to plead guilty and get a lesser sentence. It also sounds like you should never p*ss off a judge when in front of him.

I'd imagine the trial judge would have heard a little more about the case than 40 words from the venerable and impeccably well researched Metro.

Who is the victim of this crime?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61,096 ✭✭✭✭walshb

Robbo, exactly what I was thinking. The report makes it out that all was easy going and rosy and all that. He's a drug dealer and I don't give a flying **** what sentences have been handed down in the past, it's high time we got serious on drug dealers in this country.

From here on in, no sympathy and no leniency for dealers. The bigger the haul, the more lethal the drug, and the more lengthy the sentence. That's my view.

Who can say, all we know is that they got the "dealer" before he MIGHT have had a chance to snare a victim, or victims. Bit like a preemptive strike if you will

Unless he had a shed full of plants growing on a commercial scale then there's no reason to be so heavy handed. Even if it was commercial it's hard to say he should be locked up, at his age he could be supplying older people and people suffering from terminal conditions. There's no guarantee there was any other crime going on and if that's the case they had no reason to go so hard on him.

What do you have to offer over the original evidence other an spurious conjecture? The only arbiter of whether the punishment was overly harsh is the Flying Dutchman and his solicitor, who may appeal the sentence.

I think they should legalise marijuana, sell it through registered outlets and tax it. The taxes can go back into the public coffers.

That has to be a misprint.

He will explode trying to contemplate how something that is not lethal is illegal.

Wow, bit OTT that:rolleyes: Maybe your a dealer and I've offended you?

So, I could go and dissect your post, but it's probably a waste of time.

Now, could you elaborate on WHY: "no idea whatsoever what you are talking about"
