    http://www.independent.ie/national-news/sharia-law-in-ireland-if-muslims-are-the-majority-135108.html

    LARA BRADLEY
SHARIA law should rule Ireland in the event of a Muslim majority, a senior Islamic cleric has said.
The legal system, derived from the Koran, is implemented in a number of Islamic countries to varying degrees, from beheadings in Saudi Arabia to the more liberal attitudes of Malaysia.

Secretary-General of the Irish Council of Imams Ali Selim said: "There is a clear misunderstanding of the term Sharia law. People get alerted to what will happen them when they hear this term and see it as a negative thing. But under Sharia law a Christian can live by Christian laws, a Jew by the laws of Judaism, and Muslims by Sharia law.

"If the majority in a country want something and vote for it, do you accept it or do you put it in the bin? If a majority want it then it should happen. If not, that is a dictatorship."

In Sharia law a set of offences known as Hadd are punishable by penalties such as stoning or flogging to death, or the chopping off of a hand. These offences include sex outside marriage, theft and drinking alcohol, but the majority of Islamic states do not adopt Hadd offences as part of their state law.

The recently formed Irish Council of Imams represents all 14 imams in the Republic of Ireland and has the authority to speak on behalf of the country's 40,000 Muslims.

While Mr Selim would like to see Sharia law in Ireland, and the Muslim community has grown dramatically in recent years, he admits the likelihood of forming a majority is extremely slim.

He said: "The reality is that the Muslim community in Ireland, or in any part of Europe, are minorities and the best they can wish for is to be able to integrate. The Irish do not make us feel like strangers and they do not find diversity threatening. They have been very welcoming to us and we are cooperating with them for the joint good."

Speaking of the violent outcry from Muslims around the world at Pope Benedict's remarks on Islam, Mr Selim said it was important the reaction was understood in the context of the environment in which it took place.

He said: "This violence happened in a very limited area and you must look at the political environment in those areas to understand it. In Ireland we were definitely shocked, but when we realised the Vatican was taking steps towards a withdrawal we decided not to express our views. If we had expressed our views it would have been in a civil manner and in a way harmonious to the society in which we live."

Muslims will never be a majority in Ireland. To think otherwise is paranoid xenophobic nonsense.

Maybe it wouldn't be such a bad idea, for a while, theres a few beheadings I'd voluteer to carry out myself, although I'd need a special sword for that fat head of state, then another sword for mary's fat head, even the best samarai out there couldn't possibly do both.
Then those bankers, they wouldn't be dipping into our pockets if they didnt have hands.
Drug dealers, murderers, rapists, the main political parties and their sidekicks would make a great day out in Croke park, get your popcorn and stones here.
My only concern would be sex before marriage, I like my goolies where they are:eek:.

Wow a senior Islamic cleric has said SHARIA law should rule Ireland in the event of a Muslim majority. I don’t see why I should care. Muslims are a very small minority in Ireland and this is only one persons view.

Can you please explain why I should care?

Ha! You'll care soon enough when muslims sneak into your home at night and eat your first born.

I see. Currently I do not have any children but I understand how this may be a problem for those of you who do. I will now go purchase a shotgun in order to help destroy this treat to our liberties.

It is Muslims that you have to aim for the head or they’ll just keep coming isn’t it?

If the majority of people in Ireland want Sharia law then I would have no issue with that whatsoever.

    I may move elsewhere though.

I for one welcome our hand chopping overloards. They love getting stoned from what I gather too so that might be fun.

Also apparently all Jews are actually shape shifting aliens. That's a bit of a concern too.

Given that Ali Selim says this
But under Sharia law a Christian can live by Christian laws, a Jew by the laws of Judaism, and Muslims by Sharia law

They seem to be talking about a similar thing to england where by Civil disputes can be solved under Sharia Law provided both parties agree.

Which I'm totally fine with, though i don't know if that would be currently possible under Irish law. It's possible under English common law, but i don't know if we have an equivalent.

In theory it all sounds fine but try going to Saudi and asking directions to your local Christian Church or even try displaying a Christian symbol in public and see how far you get.

Except that it is not fine to have parallel legal systems. For example, how can we be sure that both parties 'agree' - especially if, say, it is a divorce case under Sharia where one party, by definition, will be female.

How can you be sure that the rights of the individuals, as defined by state law, are fully respected where the concept of 'rights' under Sharia is different.

Also, more serious crimes are sometimes dealt with by informal courts (for instance among Somalis in the UK) including assault and sexual crimes.

Anyway, it will be a long time before Ireland has a Muslim majority.

However, you don't have to be a scaremonger or a conspiracy theorist to see that Muslim numbers are rising dramatically in some EU countries and will eventually form a majority. Holland will probably be the first with a Muslim majority - quite ironic given it's liberal tradition.

Having said that the Muslims in the most populated parts of Holland are a massively marginalised group despite their numbers, and in some communities Sharia law is practised :

    http://www.nrc.nl/international/opinion/article2296923.ece/Help_Muslims_escape_the_tyranny_of_sharia_law

It has also unofficially crossed over:

    http://ayaanhirsiali.web-log.nl/ayaanhirsiali/2008/12/from-the-left-a.html

The latter link being one sided but the murders were carried out under the guise of Sharia Law. There will always be extremism.

I think unless we're all going to go back to practising religion and upholding the laws of that religion then one group shouldn't be allowed to impose it.

It is nice to hear that they feel accepted by Irish society though, here it can be painful to hear some of the off the cuff comments people make and see how the segregation happens.

Yes, but the nature or Muslim immigration to Ireland is very different to that in Holland, Germany or the United Kingdom.

In those cases, it was the 'gastarbeiter' phenomenon of the 60s and 70s that drove immigration. Consequently, the Muslims were most working-class manual labourers - who are always marginalised of any religion or none.

Muslim immigration to Ireland is a more recent phenomenon, only starting during the 'Celtic Tiger' years, and the migrants have tended to be professionals, university students etc.

As I understand it, Muslims already form a majority of the under 25-s in many urban areas of Holland. I don't know what the demographic predictions are.
