IF ITS A FRIGGIN EMERGENCY THEN PEOPLE WILL CALL 999/112. YOU ARE NOT THE EMERGENCY SERVICES. YOU DON'T HAVE A JAWS OF LIFE IN YOUR CUPBOARD WAITING TO SPRING INTO ACTION. THE ONLY THING YOU WILL DO IF CALLED IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT IS NOT SLEEP AND WORRY*

I understand that but there are some circumstances where you could be needed somewhere after something bad happens, like if a family member was sick. It probably wouldn't happen often though.

And also if someone in your house was locked out i'm sure they would be greatful if you left it on.

I remember the one night my brother decided to turn off his phone, I ended up looking for a hotel to sleep in at 3am in the morning

hypnothetically, If my dad has a heart attack in the middle of the night, I'd like to be there for my mother, and for him, in the hospital. If they can't contact me, It could be too late to be there.

It's annoying that there isn't an option (at least not on my dated phone) to create a profile containing people for whom your phone will ring for when they call but will remain silent for all other calls/txts.

Thats a very dated phone you've got. The Nokia 6110 had it. Must be nearly 10 years ago.

    Two words : ALARM CLOCK

You , and others who said the same, do know the phone doesn't need to be switched on for the alarm to work don't you ?

I use mine as my alarm clock. And I like to be contactable in case of emergency. It has happened once or twice, nothing serious, but still very glad my phone was on and I was able to help out. It's my personal mobile though, if it was a work one, I'd turn it off for evenings and weekends.

I turn it off - I don't want to waste the battery.

Leaving it on during the night means I get woken up by stupid or drunk texts.

    Off for me.

And what's the alarm clock thing all about? My phone turns on automatically when the alarm goes off?

I leave mine on all the time. What's it to you OP if we wish to leave our phones on?

Same can be said for the thicko's that turn their phones off then b!tch and whine when nobody contacts them when their family die in a car crash etc etc. Yea, so everyone has their reasons for what they do, have the respect to at least try understand.

One time I turned my phone off and forgot the pin, and then blocked the phone. So now I just leave it on :)

I had a friend send me a really emo text message in the middle of the night one time that effectively said "Goodbye cruel world". Had I not had my phone on, I would never have worried about her enough to go down to break in to her house and find her unconscious on her bed having downed enough pills to OD on.

Likewise, if I wake up in the middle of the night to a fire or a burglar, I'm not going to want to have to switch my phone on before contacting the emergency services. If the cost of safety is to have a slightest possibility that someone might ring me in the middle of the night, then I'd happily give that up.

Not all emergencies(family especially) require the emergency services:confused:

    Obvious exception. rant modified.
Um hypnothetically ? It would be ok you could just hypnotise her in the morning and she would forget it:P

If someone in my house was locked out i'd be grateful if they found somewhere else to stay. But then seeing as I live alone that would make them burglers and i would be grateful if they stayed somewhere with bars on the windows

Edit: I really wish that Sheeps had not posted the story about saving her friends life in between the time I started writing this post and the time I submitted it

I don't know why people are struggling with the concept of an emergency.
For me it's family or friends injured/sick/dying/dead.

Or something less serious like someone needing my help for whatever.

Phone off at night. Mid-week most of the missed calls and texts are fine, and could have waited till the next day. Saturday and Sunday mornings I've woken up to some of the funniest, scariest, or nonsensical voice mails, text messages, and pics. But who hasn't?

I leave it on. Do you take your house phone off the hook when you go to bed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 827 ✭✭✭VinnyTGM

I alway's leave it on, no reason to turn it off.

To be honest,I would've thought setting my alarm so I get up on time for school was mature of me. :p

I'd have to get one first. I hate my mobile, getting a land-line again is inviting trouble. If they can't get you on your mobile (that you've switched off), they'll try your fukking land line.

Always have mine on. Things can happen to people at night time too you know.

I don't see how it's stupid or immature to leave your phone on. There could be an emergency, ranging from someone locked out of the house to someone injured or worse. I can't think of any good reason to turn my phone OFF. Do you unplug your house phone at night? I doubt it. So why are mobiles different?

I love getting drunken phones calls.
Only I never know where my phone is.
Which is another good reason to keep it on at all times.
    It makes finding it easier.

I feel like the OP is immediately regretting making this thread..

Plus he speaks of midnight phone calls and people being outraged at phones being on at night as if they were common.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,185 ✭✭✭asdasd

I understand where the OP is coming from. If you leave it on the battery discharges! However I need it as an alarm clock and it doesnt work switched off.

    Reader! What to do!

I struggled with this for years, like the OP, but finally came up with the answer:

Now I leave it on plugged in, and it is then charged for the day.

What a pointless thread. What if my parents got sick or somebody I love died? OP should have thought this thread through in fairness

I've always left it switched on and charging beside the bed overnight with the alarm set for the morning - never even considered leaving it off as a possibility really it's just what I've always done!

The odd funny drunken message is the only thing I ever get after I've gone asleep and I normally just smile and roll over in my sleep.
