I was told by NTL the main reason for this is planning permission, NTL not being allowed lay new wires, this was (maybe still is?) the case in Rathmines,

Same here, very little downtime, fast connection, good customer service.

    Why would anyone have Eircom?

They are in the middle of upgrading all around the Dun Laoghaire/Monkstown area. Give it a month or two and check with them again.

Living in the area. They popped leaflets in the letterbox a few weeks back saying that the upgrades will be complete in the next 12 weeks or so.

[edit] There's a map of their upgrade plans on their site here

Really i live in monkstown too but i didnt get a upgrade letter. Though in the mail i got a one of their generic upc changeover leaflets-its about the size of a quoter of a a4 page and in the shape of red/black dartboard. It said that i could get upc broadband but when i rang up i couldn't get it they said. Really pisses me off.

Moved into a house at the end of August. We have Cable tv and broadband but also a UPC digital box. Thing is, though, the digital box isn't activated so I tried 5 times to get through to the basterds before anyone answered.

Told them my problem and they said someone would ring me back the next day.

That was at the beginning of September :( I can't even get through to anyone to cancel my digital subscription so I'm just not paying it.

So you have signed a upc contract of some sort but are not getting any service? where in monkstown roughly are you?

Oh, I'm not in Monkstown. I'm a tenant in Galway, even the landlord can't get through to them.

At least I know i'm not the only one who has a problem with them. The Neighbour has NTL, rang them, said they would send engineer to check, took CC details, said wait 6 weeks for installation...waited only to be told we could not get it. Yet they still send us post asking us to sign up. Chancers!

    Really?
    I have 20Mb and it's fine.
They're still upgrading the lines out this way though.

One of the problems here is that a neighbour is connected directly to the feed. ****er bypassed the tap. He's causing noise problems on the line.
I told him that if he doesn't at least connect through the tap, that I'll point out his house to them.
