pftt..€20's instead of €10s...that's only pocket change.
I remember once morning when I checked my online accounts that BOI had lodged 16 million into my account during the night.
Unfortunately about 2 hours later they had it gone again by the time I got up :(

The company I work for repair ATMs, in general the only ones you'll find that have €10 notes in are the ones outside a bank itself (the branch fill these themselves) the ones in stores 99% won't have €10 notes as they are filled by external companies who cba using anything bar 20s and 50s.

Also, every transaction that goes through ATMs is logged against the card / account number and timestamped, if you were using an ATM not belonging to the crowd you bank with they will pursue your bank for the cash, who in turn will pursue you. Those machines have sensors in them to detect what notes are being output, looks like a bank employee set them backwards, once they notice a large slice of cash missing from the machine (the system will show money remaining but there physically won't be any in the machine) they'll go through the transaction logs and will notice the repeated transactions of the same card(s)

Just thought I'd let you know :P

You went back to bed :rolleyes:

I know someone who they took a 100 thousand from their account of their money:mad: Instead of 10 and when they went in complaining their money had gone,They played dumb trying to say that person took it out themselves. But when they finally held their hands up to their mistake they credited their account with 5 grand for the mistake and for their rudeness.
Also another person i know found they had ten Thousand more than they should have and when they brought to banks attention they gave them 1 thousand for been honest :D

Something similar happened to me once.

I was withdrawing money from a Cumberland Building Society ATM, a tiny Cumbrian outfit. I wanted £40, but the machine gave me £100 - the notes were old and stuck together. I should mention this outfits ATMs were ancient and painfully slow. This was in 1999 and they were still using the 1980s NCR machines with the plastic screen that would raise when you put your card in.

    I said nothing.

I was standing in the park for two f**king hours with those cases - what you think, I was just going let you swan off. Damn right I reversed the payment.

tbh im pretty sure it is highly illegal to knowingly exploit banking errors like this. youd really want to own up to it. Better than the alternative, which quite frankly, may end in jailtime for you. and i know this is AH but im being fairly serious.

    This is true,

I once got a Community Chest saying there was a bank error in my favour to the tune of 200 quid, i was on top of the world as most would be.
I splashed out on a new house in a posh location and was living the high life. that was until my next Community Chest sent me directly to jail without even getting the chance of collecting 200 quid i was just about due!

Own up, it's for your own good.

    Where is this ATM ?

An ATM giving out a tenner is a rare sight.

The ATM in Trinity beside the Buttery is the only one that will always give you a tenner.

Also, the fact that it was an ATM giving out tenners narrows it down to one of a small number...Poirot to thread.

That happened before on Grafton Street a while ago. The atm was giving out €50's instead of €20's. The bank just took the money out of people's accounts.

they will just check what card was used at the time.... trace it to you.... and take it back.....

so what you have to do is withdraw all money and cancel your account as soon as possible;)

We get caught stealing money from an ATM, we're not going to white collar resort prison. No, no, no. We're going to Federal pound me in the ass prison.

Hi, random query. I, like a bollox, forgot to take my money with me when withdrawing from the ATM today. I just walked off when i got my card as I was in a world of my own.

This was an ulster bank machine so i headed to the nearest AIB bank and put in my card into the ATM and got a mini statement which said the money had been withdrawn.

Do you reckon the machine took it back in or the person after me had a lucky day?

The machines are designed to retract the cash if it isn't taken within 30 seconds, they go into a reject bin, if that's the case then you shouldn't have any trouble getting the cash back (could take a while though)

If someone took the cash after you left the machine then I don't think the bank will reimburse you.

They can tell by the electronic records if the cash was pulled back into the machine or not.

    There are 2 possibilities

    1) Someone noticed that you didnt take the cash and slipped in after you and took it.

    2) The timeout on the dispenser expired and the cash was retracted. This should go back into your account if the software is working properly. My advise is to contact your bank and ask them what has happened. The way it should work is that the cash gets retracted and the transaction is reversed. The cash is retracted to a seperate safe in the ATM that the bank can check, they would normally do this periodically. If there is cash there the bank has to find out where it came from and adjust the customers account accordingly.
The reason why the transaction appeared on the mini statement is because the transaction was not reversed properly or that this is done as a batch job at the end of the day.

The only way for sure is to talk to both banks, a couple of phone calls could get you your money back.

Aye, ive the ATM location and time so ill see.... i didnt bother with an advice slip as the machine didnt match my card....

So I should call into ulster bank (the atm in question was U.B) tomorrow as opposed to AIB (my card)..

    thanks for your help

The only one? In the whole of Ireland? Damn, I wish I went to Trinity.

its not really in a banks interest to fill a cassette on an ATM with tenners. They are the notes that will disappear the fastest and they will have to replenish more often. They will also be faced with other factors such as the distribution algorithm to use.

Do not underestimate the long memories of banks and their employees.

Customers who profit from a bank error / honest mistake / human error and refuse to repay what they genuinely owe will find that the same bank may do them no favours next time they look for a loan / mortgage / general assistance.

Found a machine in Clonskeagh a few years ago giving out 50s instead of 20s, and we basically withdrew everything we could up to our daily limit, in 40euro withdrawals.

Never heard another word about it from the bank or anybody else.

    Have absolutely no regrets either.

Stick that in your pipe and smoke it people...

Happened me at a bank machine about 7 years ago where they were giving double in each transaction. Never contacted me about it or took it out of my account.
