If you're drunk, you won't care about anything that's happening past your nose ;)

I appreciate all of the YouTube videos ... but this is actually kind of a serious problem.

Dont mean to drag you guys down!

but really... I kind of have social anxiety (It's real and I cant quite explain it.anyone who has it will know it's hell) so dancing is like everest .

Oh no believe me... Im not a nightclub kinda guy...I hate that stuff

But it's moreso my friends and an age thing...I'll have to go for social occasions anyway...birthdays etc... so I kinda have to dance etc...

We all have to do thing our friends like and we're not so fond of

but then I might grow to like night clubs once I get over my fear of dancing

    Anyone any tips?

you could always join a dancing class.
confidence will go a lot further on the dancefloor than technique but if you get confidence from learning some techniques ,so be it.
going with the flow means not allowing your fear of dancing to get in the way of your enjoyment, just groove.

About 5 shots of aftershock black will have that fear out of you in no time. :D

Just because you're in a nightclub doesn't mean you have to dance.

Ninety percent of my mates are incapable of dancing. But sure who gives a damn, we still do it. ;) Just stop over thinking the situation.

Just kind of step from foot to foot to the music or jump a lot. I can't really explain it but just follow the music. It sounds weird but practise. Dance around your room or something it helps and its fun ( and hopefully will make you less self-concious) but make sure the curtains are down!

I know... I'll probably only dance for a while. My GF is dying to get me dancing with her because she loves it... I used my age as an excuse for not going till now ;)

    You guys are the shiz!

Any more tips ... technique would be good in terms of tips like the whole 'pretend you have two coins on your shoulders'.

Then I can practice to get over the self confidence!

Seriously OP there is no way you can not look silly on the dancefloor without proper training. Unless you're the next Micheal Flatley, or have expierence, the only thing you can do if either 1)Fake an injury, or 2)Just do your best and try copying what other people are doing on the dance floor. Your best bit is to get a pint or two in you first so that you'll at least have a bit of confidence.

If it's a serious problem and you want some actual advice, maybe you should take this to Personal Issues?!

Just move your body, others wont care what you dance like once you're there. You'll have a laugh anyways. You're overthinking it.

Just make sure to keep moving your feet. Nothing mad, even just switching from left foot to right foot with the beat.
Arms at your side, slightly bent to about the height of your ribcage.(ie not dangling straight at your sides) like your holding the reins of a horse is best examle I can think of,except arms at side and not out infront of you.

With arms in this postion, move them and your shoulders slightly up and down to the beat of the music, all the time keeping your feet moving slightly from side to side/left to right foot.

This is the way majority of people ease into the night of dancing. Certain songs will have the crowd literally jumping up and down on the dancefloor, and other songs wil have everybody's hands in the air.
Just follow everyone else when this happens if it makes you feel comfortable.

As you get a bit drunker/more used to the dancing you may end up doing more imaginative moves with your arms, legs, hips or feet.

And don't worry, nobody passes the slightest bit of heed to how anybody else is dancing, unless they were doing something class like breakdancing.

Hope this helps,I've described this best as I can but you will see what I'm describing anyways when you first enter the club. :-)

    Real men don't dance.

Instead they prowl around the perimeter of the dance floor looking for their next victim.

Practice in your bedroom in front of mirror ;)
Think about it seriously everyone else around you think they can dance and probably look like idiots but its ok cause all idiots together :D

Remember half the moves on dance floor are made up by some spa jumping around and others copied lol

Good luck and dint worry how you look just relax and worry about enjoying yourself with your gf,how long are you with her btw? And does she know you are shy about dancing. If not just tell her nothing to be embarrassed about alot alot of people are ;)
I know when i first got up dancing i was mortified spent half time at discos sitting and watching till i got older.
