Well my brother and myself went down to use the new bypass after work today at 5pm and it wasn’t open so we parked our cars at the temporary road block (Murphy contractors John Deere and a trailer) at the new Kilmeaden roundabout at the Cork end of the road.

I was first in the queue along with a Taxi van and my brothers car was behind me. The Garda put me into the RHS lane and the Taxi into the LHS lane. It opened just after 6. We had a Garda motorbike escort infornt at 60KPH the whole way. At the toll as we have tags we went through the express lane to the right of the toll. Being use to the M1 toll we didn’t really slow down and subsequently passed the Garda on the motorbike. The car behind my brother’s car most have thought that the express lane was opened to everyone and subsequently crashed and broke off the barrier as he had no tag. :D Hilarious! (He didn’t stop).
Anyway the Garda motorbike passed us again just before the bridge.
What a day for Waterford and what a bridge!

So one of the first cars through crashed into a barrier . Bloody hell there are signs everywhere about it being a toll and absolutely no mention of it being free at any time. You can't beat human nature sometimes eh!?

Just back from a trip in both directions, WOW is the feeling you get while driving it!

A huge thanks to those that campaigned for this project, those that got it approved and to those that worked so hard to build it. It really is magnificent.

    Videos are currently being uploaded!

I can't wait to watch those videos! The bypass seems to be getting rave reviews...pity my car is no more, or I'd have skived off today and headed to around Waterford.

I have to say I'm delighted for everyone in Waterford and surrounding area but I am envious at the same time because it seems like there is no end in sight for the Galway Bypass saga.

    It will transform Waterford.

Good to see a bridge that doesn't apologise for its appearance and makes for a fantastic landmark. If only the West Link had been done with a little more panache like the admirably grand Boyne and Suir bridges.

Shouldn't the journo referring to the Golden Gate have thought of the Millau Viaduct instead? Far better comparison.

Anybody got any photos of how this looks from the city centre? Assuming, of course, that much of it is actually visible from there.

I think he referred to the Golden Gate because of its transforming effect, two sides of a massive bay, almost completely inaccessible from each other, whereas the millau viaduct replaces a similar route, though it is a very impressive structure.

The Bridge can be seen, or most of it can, from some of the higher vantage points like top of Johns Hill/Grange, Gracedieu as well I guess.

Should clarify that I don't expect the deck to be visible but the cables must make for a pretty impressive sight on the horizon - especially at night. A bit like the arch above Wembley Stadiium makes driving along the rotten A406 briefly enjoyable.

Not that I'm comparing Waterford to Neasden.

What little picture quality I had has been butchered by YouTube:

It begins near Slieverue and ends at Kilmeaden...100k all the way...10 minutes

It's funny, but the cables aren't all lit up at night like the ones on the Boyne Bridge are. There are what are like LEDs on the big pylon itself and they illuminate the cables out to about 10 metres or so. It's a pity I think, because it could be much more impressive.

By day. you can see the bridge from the city centre, but really only when you're down around the Rice Bridge end of the Quay.

By far and away the best view is coming in the N24. In daylight, it's visible as soon as you leave Mooncoin, and swings back into view every so often, until the point where you no longer have to look for it - it comes looking for you!

There's a point where the new and old N24 meet, just near Grannagh Castle, and it seems to be the ultimate viewing spot.

Unfortunately there's high ground directly behind the bridge, so it's not visible really from anywhere in the city other than maybe Upper Grange as mike65 said earlier.

Will the By-Pass be eventually upgraded to Motorway Spec in the near future?

  • Registered Users Posts: 577 ✭✭✭Typewriter

I'm going to Wexford town from Cork city on Friday I can't wait to see this! :D
If only this was open last year when I was living in Waterford commuting daily to Wexford, there were so many days of being stuck in traffic on the quays and on the Ferrybank dualer staring up longingly at that bridge under construction.

Is the speed limit a poxy 100? Whatever about this not being a motorway (which it clearly should be) it can't have a 100 limit, can it??

Can anyone tell me when the N9 Waterford to Knocktopher Dual carriageway is due to open? I presumed this would be opened now that the Bridge and Bypass have opened, but I tried heading that way last night and noticed that the road isn't even finished? Was a little annoyed to say the least. Anyway, any information on this would be great guys, thanks.

That's a separate project, and is discussed - in great detail - in this thread.

That thread is very unwieldy for the newcomer though - the three M9 schemes are conflated within the thread. Three separate threads would be easier to follow but it would be a nightmare for me to set up. The section between Waterford and Danesfort will open before Christmas; see here for Kilcullen to Castledermot, and here for shots of the section between Paulstown and Danesfort.

Thank you very much for that, thats all I wanted to know.

My other YouTube video, going from Kilmeaden to near Slieverue:

    Both directions, we're being spoiled!

Hmmm, I see dawdlers could be an issue on the bridge.

    Thanks, two things of interest:

-At 4:48 the No Pedestrians/Bikes/Animals sign in green. I have never seen that anywhere else.

-The proper futureproofing with the exit signs

Also are there E30 euroroute signs anywhere else on the N25?

I noticed that last night actually when driving the new road. As I understood it, the restriction on pedestrians and cyclists only applied to the section (including the bridge and toll plaza) between Grannagh and the westlink (ORR).

However, the signs saying No Pedestrians/Bikes/Animals are at either end, i.e. Slieverue and Kilmeaden (they may also be placed at the Grannagh and westlink interchanges; I haven't had a chance to see them).

While physically and engineering-wise, it's a fantastic road, this whole business of signage and it not being designated a motorway is pure farce.

The "No Pedestrians/Bikes/Animal" signs are also at Grannagh and the Westlink. This road is motorway in every shape and form except where it matters most, in designation. Before it opened, I thought some of the vertical curves might have prevented it getting motorway status but having driven it, the gradients are not that steep at all. We're already being punished on the Outer Ring Road

:D I'd say for the next few days, you could see anything on this bypass. Someone has already gone down the road on the wrong side, people STOPPING on the bridge, the broken barrier yesterday

Interesting to see the "Next Exit 2km" signs with no junction number. Future patchable?

Edit: WHAT are they doing with a ****ing roundabout sign up on a bloody gantry mount?

I suppose that's one reason to have the toll plaza near it - when on the bridge people should be slowing down or only getting up to speed anyway. I know I'd be tempted to take the foot off the gas a little if it was one of my first times crossing the bridge.

What's so wrong about that? The slip road is on a bridge, space is tight. And besides, if it's up on a gantry there's less chance of it being obscured by HGVs and other high-sided vehicles (IMO). Harder for the graffitti "artists" to get at it up there too!

Countries like Sweden are covered in gantries, even on smaller roads. I think it's something we could do with more of here.

I noticed Openstreetmap is updated to include the bypass.
